Scottie Pippen seemed to rattle the very foundation of basketball when he claimed that LeBron James may (operative word: may) be better than Michael Jordan. It was a claim that virtually no one on the planet really believes, much less wants to hear.

But Pippen said it and with him knowing MJ as well as anyone, we all had to at least acknowledge the comments and therefore, discuss them to no end. Well, finally we have LeBron's thoughts. Via The Sun Sentinel:

“Mike was an unbelievable player,” James said Saturday. “I got a long way, long way to be mentioned as one of the all-time greats. Not even just Jordan – there are a lot of great players who have played in this league: Larry Bird, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and all these guys that are floating around with multiple rings. Bill Russell. All of these guys who have pioneered the game for me and [Dwyane Wade].

“I’m gracious, humbled by Scottie’s comments with him being a teammate of his and seeing Michael on a day-to-day basis. But as far as me? I don’t know. I’m not going to sit here and say I’m better than Jordan or if I’m not better than Jordan. It's not about that.”

First part? Great answer LeBron. Bravo. Quality move to acknowledge that not only that you shouldn't be mentioned alongside Jordan, you shouldn't be mentioned alongside about 20 of the all-time greats. Not at this point. Your career is still very young (LeBron is just 26 -- !!!) and you haven't accomplished near enough as a basketball player to have your named spread across with the likes of Jordan, Bird, Russell, Kareem, Magic Johnson or even heck, Scottie Pippen. Not yet.

(And can I point out here how I love how LeBron always misuses words? You're "gracious" of Scottie's comments? He obviously misspoke and it was accidental but he does that a lot. He's trying to answer humbly but the wrong word can confuse things.)

Second part? You started well and then of course you had to go ahead and LeBron your answer by saying you won't say you're as good or not as good. Ugh. You see LeBron, this is why these types of things always come back to get you. You tried to answer this in a humble way. You tried to acknowledge your place. But you aren't the one to determine these things anyway. So just say, "Oh man, I'm not Michael Jordan. Not by a long shot. Maybe one day, if I could get to my dreams. But I have a whole lot to accomplish before then." And leave it at that. Just put a period on it, tie a bow and walk away.

That's why young stars like Derrick Rose and Kevin Durant are so darn refreshing. There's no double-talk. No ego in anything they say. They always -- and I mean always -- let their game do the talking and leave the rest up to everyone else.

I just don't understand why you said you've got a long way to go and then came back and said you're not going to say you're not as good as Jordan. That's the type of stuff that bugs people. One day maybe you'll learn. I do agee with LeBron on his last line: It definitely isn't about that. I don't know why everyone is always hung up on comparing or finding the next Jordan. I think LeBron James should be the next LeBron James. A one of a kind, freak of a basketball player that has the potential to be an all-time great.

Maybe one day we'll actually have to have this discussion. With LeBron in The Finals chasing that first ring, he could be starting a long run of them. Then we might not be able to say he's not as good as Jordan either.

LeBron responds to Pippen's claims

Others might disagree but my all-time NBA is: Hakeem at center, Duncan at power forward, Bird at small forward, MJ at shooting guard, and Magic at point guard. Kareem close second at center with Shaq third. Hakeem was the best all around center and much better on defense then both Kareem and Shaq. Duncan is the best power forward in history. Karl Malone is a close second. The best small forward in history is Larry Bird by far. There are many others for consideration. James Worthy, Alex English, I am putting Durant ahead of James at small forward simply on potential. MJ at shooting guard  is a no brainer, the all time greatest basketball player in history.  I put Kobe second behind MJ at shooting guard because Kobe simply is one of the greatest players of all time and Lebron will never ever ever be as good as Kobe was in his prime. At point guard I am putting Magic Johnson, in his prime he was one of the greatest of all-time. Isaiah is second and one of the all time greats. As a small forward Lebron eventually might move up a little on the list to 2nd or 3rd but right now Durant is ahead of him all time for the simply fact that as insane as it is to put Durant ahead of Lebron so is it insane to put Lebron ahead of some of the all-time greats. I don't put some great players like Bill Russell and the Big O and Wilt on the list for the simply fact that the competition that they played against wasn't that good compared to the 80's and further. I saw those players play and they weren't that good compared to the all-time greats I named. Luke Donald just became the #1 golfer in the world, no one in their right mind is running around saying Luke Donald is the greatest golfer of all-time. Why? Major Championships

On one other note the fix might be in for the Heat. The NBA wants the heat to win because they can make millions more off of marketing Lebron. The NBA corrupt "say it isn't so Joe"

LeBron responds to Pippen's claims

C'mon guys and gal give the kid a brak. He answered the question as well as he could and you still berate him if you dislike him so what if you like him so what. Don't kill him for answering the question it seems like every word that comes out of his mouth is scrutinized and that just isn't fair someone else said it the Celtics bought players in the 60's and 70's to win Championships but they are Icons because of the time that they were doing it He may not be in Jordans league but lets let him finish his career before we say these things. K. Durant and D.Rose have not had the media dogging them since they were teenagaers either its hard for this man to answer questions so what he made a decision that was right for him and his family if you had the chance wouldn't you? He may not have done it correctly but the end still justifies the means he made a good choice if he had gone to the knicks would we be having this conversation? I"m a Oklahoma thunder fan and I can see the many things this guy does on the court that MJ never did you can count on 2 hands the amount of times MJ got on the floor scrapping for a loose ball or didn't score or shoot so his teamates can get going . MJ made guys better because they had to contain him but lets be honest he shot 75% more shots also Lebron is playing Pt. forward Jordan was a shooting guard when is the last time you saw a player do this and be this good at it and take control of a game like he did in game 5 of the Bulls game. This kid is a Manster lets just sit back and enjoy because before you know it he will be gone and we will be speaking about the next Jordan.

LeBron responds to Pippen's claims

Doesnt one have to win a few titles first to be put in this category or even be discussed in the same breath.  Leborn is a freak talent, possibly one day will win multiple titles, but until he does this nobody should be comparing him to anyone.  In this generation, and like one other poster said, only Kobe is in the discussion.  In my opinion, Kobe is ruthless on the floor on the offensive side of the ball, and even if he does get to 6 titles, still doesnt match Jordans defensive accolades.  And in terms of the overall impact on the marketing side of the game, nobody will ever be close to Jordan.

LeBron responds to Pippen's claims

BINGO!!!! The author nailed it. It's always easy to see through LaBron's bullcrap, but this time it was the main focus in the article.
LBJ is a phony a fraud. He tries to be the nice guy and say the nice guy things, but it just doesn't come across right. James made a point to say that Pippen saw MJ every day (and therefore is qualified to call it). James is a sure enough phony.

LeBron Will Never Approach Jordan

LeBron just doesn't have the same impact on the game as Jordan did.  And I mean that on a game by game, year by year and overall impact on the NBA.  Jordan was transcendent, LeBron is not.  He's a good, maybe great player.  I think he's a lot like Oscar Robertson.  Great talent, great stats, but not considered one of the game's greats.  LeBron doesn't have the mentality or the will to compete with Jordan.  It's a mentality you can't teach or develop.  You either have it or you don't.  Jordan had it, Pippen didn't, Clyde the glide didn't, Barkley didn't, Karl Malone didn't.  Larry Bird had it.  Magic, in my opinion, didn't.  Magic was a winner, but not a killer.  Kobe is a killer, LeBron is not, Wade is not, K. Durant is not, D. Rose might be a killer; too hard to tell yet.  Besides Kobe, LeBron, Wade, Durant and D. Rose, there are no other current NBA players who are even on the level to enter the discussion about whether they are or are not a killer.  The jokers include: Deron Williams, Chris Paul, Amare Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony, Brian Westbrook and Dwight Howard most certainly is not a killer (just like Shaq who has always been a joker).  So as I see it none of the current players will ever be able to claim a status similar to Jordan except maybe Kobe.  The truth hurts and only killers win multiple championships, unless of course they pay for the best team possible.

LeBron responds to Pippen's claims

Cmon Pippen, Bulls put you courtside at each game as a tribute and all you can do is spout off about Lebron's greatness? Still trying to get that credit I see by downplaying Jordan after all these years. Bulls please keep no tippin' away from the UC.

Buyin a champuionship like the celtics? When the Celtics did it nobody hated on them, but the heat are wrong for getting great players to try and win a championship. Thats the whole goal of a team every year is to WIN a championship.

I marvel at his size, speed and athleticism but he tries way too hard to be humble.  And then his comments come out sounding arrogant.  It's like this article says...guys like DRose and KDurant have the humility thing down because...THEY REALLY ARE HUMBLE GUYS!

Nonetheless, this man can ball...straight out.

LeBron responds to Pippen's claims

I grew up watching MJ. Saw the things he did first hand in real time. Hands down the GREATEST athlete I have ever seen period. The man has been retired for over a decade and he still stars in more tv commercials, sales more shoes, and sponsers more products than the current stars of the NBA. Can we finally put this arguement to rest once and for all? Jordan is in a class all by himself.
