Report: Blazers want to trade up for Kemba Walker

No matter who's running the Trail Blazers... and we're not exactly sure who that is at this point... they've made it clear they want to reshape the backcourt. That's been a priority for months, and Andre Miller has been in trade talks for months because of it. Now comes word that they may think they have the answer in the draft. The Portland Tribune reports that the Blazers are considering moving up in the draft to acquire UConn star guard Kemba Walker.

According to a league source, Portland would like to get into the top seven to be in position to take Connecticut point guard Kemba Walker. That might mean packaging veteran point guard Andre Miller and the No. 21 pick for another team’s player along with a top-seven pick.

Acting general manager Chad Buchanan was noncommital on the report.

“Any possible avenue that will improve our team — moving up in the draft, a trade, whatever — we will consider,” Buchanan said.
via Blazers looking to move up in draft, take point guard.

Walker is the most recognizable star in the draft, outside of possibly Jimmer Fredette, and an explosive scoring guard. Questions abound regarding his size, defensive capabilities, passing ability and role at the next level, but with the talent still on Portland, it's a great fit. Nate McMillan can get the most out of Walker and teach him to cover his size problems with savvy. Meanwhile, Walker can provide the scoring punch the Blazers need and another young guard to build around as they go forward. It's a risky move, but with Miller approaching the end of his effectiveness as a starter, it may be one worth making.

Report: Blazers want to trade up for Kemba Walker

This is a "NO BRAINER" for Blazers if they find a team ala Cleveland, Toronto, Washington,  or Sacramento. We can help ourselves in 2 holes we have, one being point guard, and a power forward or center. Looking at these teams, the most likely candidates for a trade for Portland will be Sacramento, or Toronto they don't want to get younger and need a veteran leader in the backcourt. Dre would be a great fit here, the risk here is that Kemba Walker may go to Toronto, who doesn't have a legit PG other than former Blazer Jeryd Bayless, and Jose Calderon. I doubt any of the teams before Kings would draft Walker, with Cavs taking Irving, Wizards having Wall, and Kings having Tyreke Evans. Toronto is likely to draft a Center with a couple available in top 10 picks, but maybe packaging Miller, Oden with Fernandez with 21st pick for Bargnani and #5 Pick would be enticing since Toronto desperately needs a starting PG now along with a shooter in Rudy, and a potentially good center in Oden. The fit makes sense for Portland, and makes us immediately better and gives a "Dirk" type guy in Bargnani who can shoot, and rids us of a bitter Rudy, and the distraction of Oden's annual surgeries. Also packaging Miller, and Oden, & 21 for Dalembert, and the 7 pick or Jason Thompson and 7 pick. Either Dalembert or Thompson will add depth to a thin front line, and adding Walker will give us a chance to make up for the Oden pick by not getting Durant; and give us an explosive backcourt threat to team with either Roy, or Matthews. I don't know about you but Walker, Matthews/Roy, Wallace/Batum, Aldridge, Dalembert/Camby sounds like a pretty solid rotation!!  We will see what Chad and the squad can do in a couple weeks.

Not being racist here but Jimmer is like most Whte college stars in that he played in a system that catered to his style of play and they ran plays that were geared to his strengths i.e. jump shooting ! Now in the NBA were being physical and being able to beat your man off the dribble, Jimmer will struggle unless he gets with a team that uses him primarily as a 3pt threat !

Jimmer isn't a PG and he's too small and slow to play SG so he'll be a "tweener"  and if he plays SG he'll have to contend with the likes of D.Wade, Kobe, among others and that for Jimmer will be like committing suicide because they will abuse him both on both ends of the court !

Jimmer may want to call J.J. Reddick !

Good posts all around. I am not familiar with Andre Miller, but based simply on draft position a top 7th pick (without including a player) is certainly worth more than a 21st pick and a veteran player. If I was Portland I would give up my 1st and 2nd round picks and throw in a player who has a few years in the league. That is if Portland is really serious in getting Walker. But then again, they have had very bad luck drafting players who cannot stay healthy.

If there only offering up Andre Miller, then it's not going to happen....he's a bench guy, and nothing more. They would have to look at dealing Rudy Fernandez, or maybe Brandon Roy to a team with some cap space.Portland is a mess when you really look at it, they have to think about if they want to offer Oden a qualifying offer, what are they going to do about Matthews & Roy? who is going to be there starting Point Guard, Shooting Guard....? what are they going to do about Rudy Fernandez? I admit, it was nice stockpiling draft picks a few years back..but with that, you get 1st rounders who want more playing time. They don't want to ride the bench or be role guys, they spent there careers being the man.

portland wants other teams to know who they want because if there was a team in a position to draft walker they can now look at portland's roster and try to get maybe more out of them other than miller and #21 pick.  that's how negotiations work.

No way a top 7 lottery team would take that crappy offer.  No way on Earth.  It is tiresome and disturbing how sports news outlets allow their moronic sports writers to dream up fictional scenarios and present them as reality.  The unnamed source familiar with the situation is a luxury that needs to go.  Sports writers should either print the name of the source or hold onto their rumors until such time that they can.  I am tired of getting BS stories on slow sports news days.

Another completely bogus report like the Cavs one is my guess. Why would the Kings or Pistons give up the #7 or #8 pick for garbage?
