Most have been saying this NBA Finals is really the Mavs last good chance to win it all, at least in the Dirk Nowitzki era. And while yes, the Mavericks are an aging team, it's looking like most of the core will return intact for another run next season.

According to ESPN Dallas, the Mavs are looking at bringing back free agents Tyson Chandler, J.J. Barea and Caron Butler. The only other free agents on the roster are Peja Stojakovic, DeShawn Stevenson and Brian Cardinal. It seems unlikely Peja and Cardinal will be retained, but Stevenson could be an interesting situation, especially since he's made quality contributions for Dallas in the postseason.

But with Jason Kidd saying recently that he doesn't plan on retiring, the Mavs will have pretty much this same group back, plus Butler who has missed a large portion of the season and the entire playoffs after knee surgery. Yes, Dirk will be a year older, Kidd almost 40 and a lot of other players are there in age. But what's another year or two when you can still play? Age never affected the Mavs this season, so I don't think it's that big a deal.

There isn't a prime free agent crop this summer to stalk either and with the lockout situation looming, the Mavs might just stand pat. Especially because 2012 will have some interesting names up like Dwight Howard, Chris Paul and Deron Williams.

So that will definitely be a consideration as the Mavs look at how long-term they want to commit to those guys. Signing Chandler or Butler to a major deal could potentially hurt the chances of having the flexibility to pursue a big name in 2012. But Donnie Nelson and Mark Cuban obviously already know that.

Report: Mavs considering 'mason' Peja

Rumor has it Dallas is going to build a new monument in Nowitzki's honor. Also, they're asking Peja to come back to lay the first bricks ...

chiledipper, you didn't seriously think Butler has a similar impact to James, Wade, or Bosh, do you?  Give me a break.  The dude went from all-star to barely an overpaid starter before the injury.

Butler would add a net 10 more points
bahahahahahahhahahhahahahah!

Thanks for that.  It's been a lousy day and I needed something to make me laugh.  The Mavs averaged about 2.5 PPG more with Butler in the lineup than after he was injured.  Barely-starter kind of guys like Butler has regressed to don't make a 10 point difference in the league.

Why they have the refs. In crunch time if you blew on Dirk it was clock stopped and two at the other end but Marion landed on Lebron and the ref swallowed the wistle. It was like that the whole game it was so obvious there should be a gambling investigation. Tell me how the game could end and Dallas still had a foul to give? Tell me how the walking foul Candler ended the game with two and had zero in the first half> Unbeleivable fraud.

Butler would add a net 10 more points and don't forget about Roddy B.  He's a guy with speed and good defensive skills.  Having these two healthy and in the rotation would make a huge difference in a tight series.

Looks like the Big 3 proved that chilidipper is the only "tool" in this shed.  That being said, great game tonight, great series so far, I said Heat in 6 before, I still think that will be the case.  If I am the Mavs I may have eyes on those mentioned FA's but if I have a sure thing and can resign Chandler, Butler and Barea I would do that, this team may have another run or two in them and obviously is a elite team now, you cannot take a step back and hope in 2012 to get one of those guys, win now, that's what sports are all about and you all know that.

Take that on your home floor douche bags.  The big are not the brightest apples??  Lebron James best player in the NBA... DWADE top 5 player in the world and bosh top 20 player an allstar for the least.  Get ready bitches in Dallas the Heat will win in six and next year we will have Haslem and Mike Miller healthy all year and oh ya a mid level exception free agent veteran.

Don't know that Caron Butler would have made such an impact in game one that Dallas would have won, however over the course of an entire series you bet he would make a difference. Take one of the big 3 off Miami... and see what happens.

Stll amazes me... most everyone picks the Lakers over Dallas in Round 1... then all of the sports talk show genuies pick the Thunder in 6. If game two showed us anything it's that the Big 3 aren't exctaly the sharpest tools in the shed... or the brightest lights in the sky... that's for damn sure!
