Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Terry wonders whether LeBron James can guard him for an entire series. Posted by Ben Golliver. jason-terry-speech

As the intensity of the 2011 NBA Finals continues to ratchet up, so too do the one-liners and trash talk.

First, on Saturday, it was Miami Heat forward LeBron James stating that Dallas Mavericks forward Shawn Marion can't guard him alone. Then, on Sunday, it was's Gregg Doyel writing that James was shrinking in the fourth quarters, prompting a retort from James.

On Monday, the Mavericks fired some shots of their own.'s Matt Moore reported that guard DeShawn Stevenson called the Heat "actors."

Mavericks guard Jason Terry joined the fray in a major way, calling out Miami's defense as a whole and questioning whether James can hang as well. quoted Terry taking a swipe at Miami's team defense.
Terry still seems hesitant to give too much credit to the Heat, even going so far as to say the Portland Trail Blazers were better on defense in the first-round series than Miami has been in the Finals.

"Portland, by far, has the best D," said Terry, who added that the Heat has a "great scheme" that is "working for them thus far this series."

The Palm Beach Post reported that Terry then took a shot at James, wondering whether the All-Star could continue to be effective against him throughout the course of a series.

Terry is shooting just 38.2 percent, and hasn't made a shot when LeBron James has been guarding him in the fourth quarter.

"I'm welcoming the challenge," Terry said of James. "We're going to see if he can do it for seven games."

Neither the raw numbers nor the efficiency numbers offer much support to Terry's claims.

The Mavericks as a team are averaging 88.3 points per game in the Finals, down 3.5 points from their average of 91.8 points per game against the Blazers. Terry is averaging 14.3 points against the Heat, down three full points from his 17.3 points per game average against the Blazers.

During the regular season, the Heat were ranked No. 5 in defensive efficiency while the Blazers were ranked No. 14. In the postseason, Miami has improved to No. 2 while the Blazers ranked No. 15 out of 16 playoff teams.

Chalk this up to desperate false bravado from Terry. If he truly believes Portland played better defense than Miami, he's insane. If he's trying to play mind games, he clearly overplayed his hand to the point that no one can take him seriously.

The only possible saving grace? Some players, Terry included, find motivation in verbalizing criticism of their opponents. This could all just be a complicated way for Terry to get his swagger back. He clearly needs to find it, and soon, or the Mavericks could be facing elimination.

Terry: Can LeBron guard me for a whole series?

The series is Hollywood at this point.  Dallas needs to win  game 4 if they are trying to esablish some sort of momentum.  James can guard, Terry is just trying to get into the weak feable easily rattled nugget.  Besides that Miami needs to play some selfshish ball here in game 4 so the implosion can begin.

Born 2 Run: Trash talking is part of most sports, one of them basketball.

They said this to the media, the media reports and we read it.

I just hope the Heat especially Lebron read this article.

Let's Go Heat!!!

ENough of this choke artist BS.... He has played great in the playoffs in the 4th quarter thus far and erased all of the 4th quarter BS... Yes he didn't have it in the game 3 4th quarter but that happens... It happens to Kobe, it happened to MJ and yes it happens to Lebron too... That's why basketball is a Team sport because you can rely on your teammates to step up in the 4th quarter...

As for the phantom 3 pointers, one shot in the 1st quarter did not make or break this game...  I think the 18 turnovers by the Mavs had a little more to do with it... But I guess you didn't factor that into your analysis....  You and Yahoo Sports are the only people dwelling on that shot

This is what happens when we have all these off days between games..everyone just talks their bull$hit and sport sites like CBS report these non my opinion we should have back to backs a lot of the time in these series cause it keeps the play at a high level and keeps the BS at a minimum.

LeBron doesnt need to guard him, he is a "self-check" on wide open shots. After costing his team a chance at winning game 3, I think I would have swallowed humble pie instead of calling out one of the best players on the planet. (And I dont even like Lebron, but that was stoop)

Jason Terry is missing good shots, he seems a little afraid of the moment. His shots will fall, I like that he is calling out Lebron James. When you are a shooter, shots will always fall, just keep taking good shots. Terry will now need to step his game up after this comment. I mean, Bron Bron shrunk in the moment after claiming himself as unguardable. Marion tore him up. Let's see if the jet can come through. I think Dallas is the better team, they just aren't being as consistent as they've been leading up to the Finals. That tells me they are allowing the moment to take them out of their games. It's time to step up and play basketball. Lets go Mavericks!
