This story is beyond idiotic. Wade did make fun of Nowitzki, Wade didn't make fun of Nowitzki, its shelf life has reached absurd levels. But no. Here we are, three days after it happened, still talking about it, still asking reporters about it, still being stunningly daft about what it means in a bigger context. There's no high horse here. Obviously trash talk is a fun concept. But this has just gotten absurd and its things like this which are overshadowing actually good basketball.

With that said, here's your obligatory update to what was said after practice Saturday about Sniffle-gate. Trust me, check our numbers or anyone else's, this is what people want to read about.

Dwyane Wade told reporters Saturday that the entire episode wasn't meant to make fun of Dirk, it started as a legitimate cough, which then turned into he and LeBron James joking about how reporters would blow it up. Which, naturally, the media did.

"I wasn't fake coughing," Wade said. "I actually did cough. And with the cameras being right there, we made a joke out of it because we knew you guys were going to blow it up. You did exactly what we knew."

I'm going to pause here and let everyone get out their "Ha! Yeah, right!" 's  and their "A likely story!"'s. I'm going to let you guffaw and shake your head (or "SMH" if you're the Twittering type). Get it all out of your system. And I'm not saying that because I think Wade's being honest. He could be. He very well could not be. But the one thing he's right about is that we, the media, and oh, yes, you the fans (don't think you're not culpable here) took this ten seconds of interaction and made it into a huge deal. We blew it up, Wade's right about that. Whether he's covering or not, it became a story, during the NBA Finals, one that is rife with quality storylines. This became the story for three days.

The Mavericks for the most part would not take the bait before practice Saturday, with Shawn Marion saying "I hadn't even heard about it until I saw it on CNN this morning." Jason Terry said he had not seen the video and didn't care about it. Dirk Nowitzki was really the only Maverick to say anything about the whole thing.

"I just thought it was a little childish, a little ignorant," Nowitzki said. "I've been in this league for 13 years.  I've never faked an injury or an illness before.  But it happened.  It's over to me.  It's not going to add anything extra to me.  This is the NBA Finals.  If you need an extra motivation, you have a problem."

What you have is a situation where what Wade and James did probably irked Nowitzki. It's not that it was that bad or it was anything terrible. It's not what's going to drive Nowitzki Sunday, or any of the Mavericks. It's just another example of the Heat not only knowing how to avoid media scrutiny, but swerving directly onto the tracks, then blaming other people for driving them into the train. The Heat are obviously under more scrutiny than any team in history, but it doesn't change the fact that they do something seemingly every game to keep that white hot spotlight there. Maybe it's about attention. Maybe it's about immaturity. Maybe it's just a series of unfortunate events. But every other superstar in the league manages to avoid getting in trouble 9 out of 10 times, while the Heat bat about .400. And this time, they insulted Nowitzki, intentionally or not.

So Nowitzki jabbed back, obviously offended on a professional level, but he's not going to let it get to him. If the Mavericks close this thing out in six, it won't be because of Wade and James acting like idiots on camera. It'll be because the Mavericks have proved they're the better team and won four out of six. This Mavericks team is made up of experienced veterans. They're not caught up in trash talk, though they dish a lot of it. They want the title, they want the glory, they want to make up for 2006. This is about legacy, not the sniffles.

Duane Wade and Lebron James are what they are... a couple of racist punk thug millionaires who simply don't like the white people. Most especially one in particular in Dirk Nowitzki who has clearly shown them up thus far.

Chiledipper where is this race issue coming from? Have you ever spoken with Wade or Lebron or heard them say anything that would lead you to believe they hate white people? You and Sithmaster are reaching and there's nothing there to grab. Do yourselves a favor and give the race thing a rest!

Not sure why you posted this video. It just shows how much tougher D Wade is than anyone else playing in this series. On the play in the video Wade tears his labrum and dislocates his shoulder. He needed surgery but put it off for 4 months to finish the season. It was a major injury. The wheelchair was doctors orders to immobilize the arm completely. Hate on Wade all day, and make ignorant assumptions all you want. Dude is amazing. I saw the cough clip live the day it happened and heard the words spoken. It was obvious right from the get-go they were playing with the camera men. He coughed, LeBron covered his face, both were being silly like it was the swine flu, and the media assumed they were making fun of Dirk. One thing D Wade doesn't do is make fun of his opponents. Ever. He's pretty good friends with everyone in the NBA. Can't think of a time he's ever said anything negative about another player. This was the media blowing something up, again, 100%.

Dwayne Wade too, after how he did his wife and kids this offseason in order to be with a woman who is 10 years older than him and known for being with and marrying athletes, I think more than a little ignorant describes them both best.

KLM11 you don't have the slightest clue as to why Wade divorced his wife or what's going on in his personal life. It's very ignorant for you to try and judge someone you don't know personally an probably have never even met. What they did was stupid and uncalled for and very immature but lets leave it at that. Buy the way Wade won custody of his kids which is very hard for a father to do in todays legal system, so that should tell you a little something about his marital situation.

I hope Dirk shoots their lights out.  I hope he puts  up 48 and shoves the ball  down Lebrons throat.  Go Dallas.

I actually believe Wade's version of the incident – he coughs, then has a silly idea about how media types are always after anything to get their byline out front.

Thing is, he's smart enough, if he thought at all, to know poking fun at the media is a no-win kid's game.  The media will never see themselves as the butt of a joke – They're not smart enough to know when their leg is being pulled.

It actually doesn't surprise me that wade and queen james would play this sort of immature game.

The fact of the matter is, Dirk is being seen as taking the spot light off of blacks in their sport, which he is, because he's better at it. Since they can't handle losing the spotlight, they're throwing around stupid insults and acting like 5 year olds, which is about the best they can manage, with having genetically low (around 75) IQ's. Basketball is seen as a black specific sport, and any time a white is actually doing better than the blacks, he gets lambasted, and usually opens up all sorts of flagrant fouls that the refs just HAPPEN to not see.

The NBA is the most racist sports league in the United States. Disband immediately. After my Mavs win the finals, of course.
Sithmaster3 this has nothing to do with race it was two guys being immature and unprofessional. Your comment shows your lack of IQ for even trying to make this into a black & white issue. Dirk is having a great run these playoffs, but it has absolutely nothing to do with him being German and black players being upset that he's outplaying them. That has to be one of the dumbest comments i've read. Sometimes it's better to let people think you're an idiot and keep your mouth closed, than to open it and remove all doubt!

No, LeBron is NOT better than that, and Wade has descended to his level.  Either they're being a prize pair of damned fools, or they don't give a hoot, or they know that they'll win because David Stern has decided so.  I vote for the first option.

I used to like LeBron until his callous treatment of just about everyone not in his posse and his quitting on his teammates in Cleveland showed us the real "King" James.  I used to at least respect Wade, despite his flopping and fake injuries (from the Paul Pierce School of Bad Acting).  No more.  At least the least of the Little Three, Chris Bosh, isn't particpating in this claptrap.

I'm a Heat fan and I just don't get this one. Be professional, why add fuel to the fire. The incident while not a big deal, could have easily been avoided by simply being an adult. The Heat need to be concentrating on getting stops and making shots down the stretch, not making fun of someone who's busting your a@! every game. Dirk said it best it was childish, hopefully the Heat give the media something to talk about on the court Sunday, and not more fuel to bash this teams every move off the court. I call it like I see it, alot of the scrutiny has been pathetic and unwarranted, but this was just plain stupid. Why give them a reason to write about something other than basketball. That being said I believe the Heat will still win this thing if they do what they do best and that's play basketball. I'll finish this post with a line from Mark Jackson "D-Wade and Lebron come on you're better than that!"
