This story is beyond idiotic. Wade did make fun of Nowitzki, Wade didn't make fun of Nowitzki, its shelf life has reached absurd levels. But no. Here we are, three days after it happened, still talking about it, still asking reporters about it, still being stunningly daft about what it means in a bigger context. There's no high horse here. Obviously trash talk is a fun concept. But this has just gotten absurd and its things like this which are overshadowing actually good basketball.

With that said, here's your obligatory update to what was said after practice Saturday about Sniffle-gate. Trust me, check our numbers or anyone else's, this is what people want to read about.

Dwyane Wade told reporters Saturday that the entire episode wasn't meant to make fun of Dirk, it started as a legitimate cough, which then turned into he and LeBron James joking about how reporters would blow it up. Which, naturally, the media did.

"I wasn't fake coughing," Wade said. "I actually did cough. And with the cameras being right there, we made a joke out of it because we knew you guys were going to blow it up. You did exactly what we knew."

I'm going to pause here and let everyone get out their "Ha! Yeah, right!" 's  and their "A likely story!"'s. I'm going to let you guffaw and shake your head (or "SMH" if you're the Twittering type). Get it all out of your system. And I'm not saying that because I think Wade's being honest. He could be. He very well could not be. But the one thing he's right about is that we, the media, and oh, yes, you the fans (don't think you're not culpable here) took this ten seconds of interaction and made it into a huge deal. We blew it up, Wade's right about that. Whether he's covering or not, it became a story, during the NBA Finals, one that is rife with quality storylines. This became the story for three days.

The Mavericks for the most part would not take the bait before practice Saturday, with Shawn Marion saying "I hadn't even heard about it until I saw it on CNN this morning." Jason Terry said he had not seen the video and didn't care about it. Dirk Nowitzki was really the only Maverick to say anything about the whole thing.

"I just thought it was a little childish, a little ignorant," Nowitzki said. "I've been in this league for 13 years.  I've never faked an injury or an illness before.  But it happened.  It's over to me.  It's not going to add anything extra to me.  This is the NBA Finals.  If you need an extra motivation, you have a problem."

What you have is a situation where what Wade and James did probably irked Nowitzki. It's not that it was that bad or it was anything terrible. It's not what's going to drive Nowitzki Sunday, or any of the Mavericks. It's just another example of the Heat not only knowing how to avoid media scrutiny, but swerving directly onto the tracks, then blaming other people for driving them into the train. The Heat are obviously under more scrutiny than any team in history, but it doesn't change the fact that they do something seemingly every game to keep that white hot spotlight there. Maybe it's about attention. Maybe it's about immaturity. Maybe it's just a series of unfortunate events. But every other superstar in the league manages to avoid getting in trouble 9 out of 10 times, while the Heat bat about .400. And this time, they insulted Nowitzki, intentionally or not.

So Nowitzki jabbed back, obviously offended on a professional level, but he's not going to let it get to him. If the Mavericks close this thing out in six, it won't be because of Wade and James acting like idiots on camera. It'll be because the Mavericks have proved they're the better team and won four out of six. This Mavericks team is made up of experienced veterans. They're not caught up in trash talk, though they dish a lot of it. They want the title, they want the glory, they want to make up for 2006. This is about legacy, not the sniffles.

I'm sure the Mavs and their fans are in ruins now that you've expressed your newfound allegience to the Heat. Black or White, the guy is an a-hole. A tool who labels himself "The Chosen One".... someone who could've left town quietly, but decided to twist the knife a bit more in the city of Cleveland, a jerk who's sense of entitlement is off the charts. How can you not hate him or root against him? What has he done to make anyone besides Wade, his own Mother or 18000 phony fans dressed like maxi pads adore him?

LOFL ... yeah Dwayne, cuz the first thing people think about you is what a massive intellect you are. That is almost as lame an excuse as Sarah "Trixie Klondike" Palin's Paul Revere story. Hey lookey Dwayne ... you are almost as smart as the republicans brightest mind.

Your missing the point of all of this foolishness caused by Lebron and D-Wade. Lebron James is a great player, perhaps someday he we will annoited as the greatest of all time, but his character does come into question based on the developments of last summer's free agency. He revealed a very immature, ego-driven individual. Many people in the media as well as millions of fans were disappointed and thougt he was a better man than that. I completely lost respect for him as an individual. I'll never doubt his game, but he threw away any opportunity to transcend the game of basketball by forming a coup-de-tat that is the Miami Heat. You can choose to root for the Heat if you want to, but the Heat as they are right now are bad for basketball. This nothing to do with race, but has everything to do with competitive balance.

Alright that's it-I'm a new Heat fan now.

I get it that the sports media has turned on Lebron James and the Heat. I get it that the majority of fans have turned on the Heat. I even get it that I was only too happy to have them receive their comeuppance. But now, I'm pulling for them-this is too much. The pettiness of some of the anti-Lebron/anti-Heat stories is absurd. This story is petty and more childish than the act itself. This is why so many black fans support people such as Lebron and Iverson-when whites fans and sportswriters decide they don't like a player, particularly a black one-he can never do anything right in their eyes ever again, PLUS, they allow themselves license to pick, pick, pick at everything the guy does to the point of pure juvenile pettiness.

It's like ALRIGHT-we get it-you all don't like how James went about his business last summer. You don't like how he's been annointed the best player in the NBA and a legend though he hasn't won anything. You don't like the nickname King.

Well guess what-neither do I, but it stops right there. I'm not going to waste not even a moment of my life developing a vexation, dislike or hatred toward the guy-it's just sports. Seriously, it's not that deep. I'm rooting for the Heat now, even though I would be happy to see Jason Kidd win a championship. The amount of animus directed at the Heat and James has made me a Heat fan.

These clowns in Miami have become a bunch of circus clowns...not unlike their fanbase in the major sports there.

Hopefully Dirk and Co. put them to sleep tonight.

Like him or hate him, Lebron's move to Miami was the best thing that could've happened for the game. It's finally exciting again! Guaranteed the ratings will be through the roof tonight. Best Finals we've seen in years both on and off the court.

Note...I've really come to respect Dirk through this series. He's a humble man and a great player.

the point isn't about being too sensitive or the media blowing it up.  the point is that they made fun of him for being sick in game 4 when he torched them in the 4th and then after making fun of him, gave up another 10 pt fourth quarter to Dirk in game 5.  it's more pathetic than classless, you guys work on making fun of the best player in the series, he'll just quietly drop 15 on you in the 4th and win the series

Only if you're a mindlessn nutcase, would you assume that Lebron and Wade were making fun of Dirk.  They were not.  They were DEFIANTLY making fun of the media who is reaching for a media darling amid the hatred for the Heat.  Lebron and Wade were just affirming and taking a strong stance against the media declaring 'ENOUGH, WE DO NOT CARE WHAT YOU (MEDIA) THINKS ABOUT US ANYMORE'.
