This story is beyond idiotic. Wade did make fun of Nowitzki, Wade didn't make fun of Nowitzki, its shelf life has reached absurd levels. But no. Here we are, three days after it happened, still talking about it, still asking reporters about it, still being stunningly daft about what it means in a bigger context. There's no high horse here. Obviously trash talk is a fun concept. But this has just gotten absurd and its things like this which are overshadowing actually good basketball.

With that said, here's your obligatory update to what was said after practice Saturday about Sniffle-gate. Trust me, check our numbers or anyone else's, this is what people want to read about.

Dwyane Wade told reporters Saturday that the entire episode wasn't meant to make fun of Dirk, it started as a legitimate cough, which then turned into he and LeBron James joking about how reporters would blow it up. Which, naturally, the media did.

"I wasn't fake coughing," Wade said. "I actually did cough. And with the cameras being right there, we made a joke out of it because we knew you guys were going to blow it up. You did exactly what we knew."

I'm going to pause here and let everyone get out their "Ha! Yeah, right!" 's  and their "A likely story!"'s. I'm going to let you guffaw and shake your head (or "SMH" if you're the Twittering type). Get it all out of your system. And I'm not saying that because I think Wade's being honest. He could be. He very well could not be. But the one thing he's right about is that we, the media, and oh, yes, you the fans (don't think you're not culpable here) took this ten seconds of interaction and made it into a huge deal. We blew it up, Wade's right about that. Whether he's covering or not, it became a story, during the NBA Finals, one that is rife with quality storylines. This became the story for three days.

The Mavericks for the most part would not take the bait before practice Saturday, with Shawn Marion saying "I hadn't even heard about it until I saw it on CNN this morning." Jason Terry said he had not seen the video and didn't care about it. Dirk Nowitzki was really the only Maverick to say anything about the whole thing.

"I just thought it was a little childish, a little ignorant," Nowitzki said. "I've been in this league for 13 years.  I've never faked an injury or an illness before.  But it happened.  It's over to me.  It's not going to add anything extra to me.  This is the NBA Finals.  If you need an extra motivation, you have a problem."

What you have is a situation where what Wade and James did probably irked Nowitzki. It's not that it was that bad or it was anything terrible. It's not what's going to drive Nowitzki Sunday, or any of the Mavericks. It's just another example of the Heat not only knowing how to avoid media scrutiny, but swerving directly onto the tracks, then blaming other people for driving them into the train. The Heat are obviously under more scrutiny than any team in history, but it doesn't change the fact that they do something seemingly every game to keep that white hot spotlight there. Maybe it's about attention. Maybe it's about immaturity. Maybe it's just a series of unfortunate events. But every other superstar in the league manages to avoid getting in trouble 9 out of 10 times, while the Heat bat about .400. And this time, they insulted Nowitzki, intentionally or not.

So Nowitzki jabbed back, obviously offended on a professional level, but he's not going to let it get to him. If the Mavericks close this thing out in six, it won't be because of Wade and James acting like idiots on camera. It'll be because the Mavericks have proved they're the better team and won four out of six. This Mavericks team is made up of experienced veterans. They're not caught up in trash talk, though they dish a lot of it. They want the title, they want the glory, they want to make up for 2006. This is about legacy, not the sniffles.

It may have been childish or stupid, but who cares.  If we need to waste time talking about  this crap, I give up.  We are in the midst of a great final series, who cares if Dirks fealings got hurt.  If the Mavs win one of the next two, we can celebrate by faking coughs all around the country.  Let's just hope the Heat lose, than we can laugh at post nasel drip, or whatever else comes up!

Wow, I'll be the one and only on this blog to defend the Heat!  All of you are some cry babies!!!  Oh they are having fun, oh they insulted someone, look in the mirror.  ALL OF YOU ARE INSULTING People right now, what makes you different.  Did Wade or James call the Mavs heartless, or smucks, or Dirkbum, weakDirk, or anything else that you childish people are blogging?  NO.  Let this stupid thing die.

Oh and sorry to hurt all of your feelings but the heat will win this game and take it to 7 like the NBA wants.  There is a lot more to this series than most of you think.  This series is getting the highest ratings in NBA HISTORY...Hmmmm reason?
Yea. the Heat are a bunch of classless whiners and everyone wants to see them lose.

Jordan and LeBron are great players but Jordan was a great competitor. Basketball, badmitton, cards or what the temperature is-Jordan wanted to win. LeBron is likely too suave to be hittin' any badmittion.

danimal is right divorce proceedings  (and alot wade's was published last spring )are public record and anyone can read them at any time, and it is clear from those proceedings that Dwayne wade is a lowlife  scumbag

Spanky Johnson the judge seemed to disagree with you obviously. There are 2 sides to every story, just because someone says something doesn't make it true. I don't judge people I don't know personally. You obviously do more power to you if it makes you feel better, but in the immortal words of the ROCK "It doesn't matter what you think!"

Lots of sensitive people wyo, are you kidding?  I am not sensitive, but find it classless.  To make fun of someone for being sick with a 102 degree flu is gives people even more reason to hate and root against the Heat.  And to make it worse, they did it purposely in front of the cameras because they were there.  And the player who was sick stepped up when it counted to lead his team to the win.  Queen James, meanwhile, scored ZERO points in the 4th quarter and passed the ball whenever he got it.  He left the Cavs and joined Wade not because he felt he couldn't win with the Cavs because no one would join him there, but because he did not want to have the burden of being "the guy."  He knew that in Miami, Wade could be "the guy" and he would not have to have the ball in his hands when it counted.  There are so many reasons LeQueen and the Heat have been hated.  First, from the way they schemed to put this team together to "The Decision" to the WWE-like celebration when they came popping out of the ground guaranteeing multiple championships, to the attention they got aboard that naval ship in the pre-season, to their non-stop bickering all season long, and finally this.  I have always liked Wade.  He was the only one I still rooted for, but LeQueen has influenced his lack of class on him as well.  It is very unprofessional to make fun of opponents, especially after they beat you twice.  And for that same player to disappear two games in a row in the fourth quarter and have one basket COMBINED in the two games when he is supposed to be the best player in the NBA is a joke.  All this talk and nothing so far to back it up.  He has such a superego as though he has won several titles.  He has not won anything yet and what he did is just giving people like myself and many other fans yet another reason to hate LBJ on top of the other reasons already mentioned here.  I will be rooting hard for both Dirk and the Mavs and hope the Heat and LePrick get embarrassed in front of their front-running fans and if they do lose, they will get what they have deserved from the moment of "The Decision."  I hope the new collective bargaining agreement finds a way to force these clowns to have to split up this team.  I hate them and I hate hearing about them constantly on ESPN.  There are 29 other teams and this one a-hole is all you hear about.  He will never be Jordan because he lacks the class and heart MJ had and Barkley and Magic are 100% right about everything they said about him.

shocking that Amos and Andy would pull a stunt like this--had the situsation been reversed there would be countless articles on the racism aspect of making fun of one of these two morons--just shows that even a  100mil cant buy class--LeDouceh and LilDwayne are comical at this point. LeFool should be worrying about who his Skank momma and baby momma will be sitting with tomorrow night and the father of the year lil dwayne should be sorrying bout who his kids will be sitting with rather than showing thier unfortunate upbringing.  BTW neither of these douch bags are even close to being funny.
