Dirk calls Sniffle-gate childish, ignorant

This story is beyond idiotic. Wade did make fun of Nowitzki, Wade didn't make fun of Nowitzki, its shelf life has reached absurd levels. But no. Here we are, three days after it happened, still talking about it, still asking reporters about it, still being stunningly daft about what it means in a bigger context. There's no high horse here. Obviously trash talk is a fun concept. But this has just gotten absurd and its things like this which are overshadowing actually good basketball.

With that said, here's your obligatory update to what was said after practice Saturday about Sniffle-gate. Trust me, check our numbers or anyone else's, this is what people want to read about.

Dwyane Wade told reporters Saturday that the entire episode wasn't meant to make fun of Dirk, it started as a legitimate cough, which then turned into he and LeBron James joking about how reporters would blow it up. Which, naturally, the media did.

"I wasn't fake coughing," Wade said. "I actually did cough. And with the cameras being right there, we made a joke out of it because we knew you guys were going to blow it up. You did exactly what we knew."

I'm going to pause here and let everyone get out their "Ha! Yeah, right!" 's  and their "A likely story!"'s. I'm going to let you guffaw and shake your head (or "SMH" if you're the Twittering type). Get it all out of your system. And I'm not saying that because I think Wade's being honest. He could be. He very well could not be. But the one thing he's right about is that we, the media, and oh, yes, you the fans (don't think you're not culpable here) took this ten seconds of interaction and made it into a huge deal. We blew it up, Wade's right about that. Whether he's covering or not, it became a story, during the NBA Finals, one that is rife with quality storylines. This became the story for three days.

The Mavericks for the most part would not take the bait before practice Saturday, with Shawn Marion saying "I hadn't even heard about it until I saw it on CNN this morning." Jason Terry said he had not seen the video and didn't care about it. Dirk Nowitzki was really the only Maverick to say anything about the whole thing.

"I just thought it was a little childish, a little ignorant," Nowitzki said. "I've been in this league for 13 years.  I've never faked an injury or an illness before.  But it happened.  It's over to me.  It's not going to add anything extra to me.  This is the NBA Finals.  If you need an extra motivation, you have a problem."

What you have is a situation where what Wade and James did probably irked Nowitzki. It's not that it was that bad or it was anything terrible. It's not what's going to drive Nowitzki Sunday, or any of the Mavericks. It's just another example of the Heat not only knowing how to avoid media scrutiny, but swerving directly onto the tracks, then blaming other people for driving them into the train. The Heat are obviously under more scrutiny than any team in history, but it doesn't change the fact that they do something seemingly every game to keep that white hot spotlight there. Maybe it's about attention. Maybe it's about immaturity. Maybe it's just a series of unfortunate events. But every other superstar in the league manages to avoid getting in trouble 9 out of 10 times, while the Heat bat about .400. And this time, they insulted Nowitzki, intentionally or not.

So Nowitzki jabbed back, obviously offended on a professional level, but he's not going to let it get to him. If the Mavericks close this thing out in six, it won't be because of Wade and James acting like idiots on camera. It'll be because the Mavericks have proved they're the better team and won four out of six. This Mavericks team is made up of experienced veterans. They're not caught up in trash talk, though they dish a lot of it. They want the title, they want the glory, they want to make up for 2006. This is about legacy, not the sniffles.

Sick of both of them

Maybe it's just me, but I am really tired of the whole "Heatles" thing, they have no semblance of teamwork or guts.......the Heat are making it real easy for America to hate them.......

Does anybody know that D-wade got divorced because he was sleeping with any and ever girl that would smile at him?? He gave his wife The STD to prove it. Give me a break Jharryheat..he had the money to buy his kids in court...That is how the legal system works.

Danimal73 I'm sure you have all that information because you were at the divorce proceedings right, or better yet you were her attorney. I'm pretty sure she had money for top notch attornies as well. Like I said before it's ignorant to judge someone you don't know, but if it makes you feel better go ahead it doesn't affect me in any way shape or form.

Fight fire with fire! Just before tip-off, Dirk should grab his hip with an agonizing look on his face, flop onto his back, wriggle around like he just got impregnated by an alien and then hop up and drop 35 and 10 on these fools!  Just kidding, Dirk is way too classy for those kind of shenanigans! Go Mavs!

I think it is funny, maybe they can next do an imitation of how the goat faced pansy acts like he is going to die everytime he gets touched in order to try to get fouls called, not that most of the other players aren't like this as well.  The funniest is that midget on Dallas, Barea, when he is trying to play D he will get close to a guy with the ball and every time he hits the guy who has the ball he will throw his arms up and throw his body backwards in order to try to get a call.  You should watch him, its like what Kevin Martin does on offense but of course on defense.  Great series so far, I expect more of the same, win or lose Dirk is still a pansy and a nazi, ha, just had to throw out something "ignorant" so maybe those who post her can blow it out of proportions as well.  Over under for Game 6 is 7, this is the number of times dirk gets that constipated look on his face after someone barely touches him and if you watch him play you know the look all to well.  Squeeze you nazi, maybe they will call a foul!  Tomorrow may be the day for all those sad people out there who live and die on whether Miami wins or loses, maybe if they lose your life will be better because your life must be great if you have that much time to care that much about the outcome of one team.

Dirk: Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

No matter what they do, say, etc, they still have to beat you on the court. Don't bow to their level - keep being the classy superstar that you are. I hope you win in 6. You and Dallas definitely deserve it more than Miami.

I have to say I was a huge D-Wade fan. He is still a great player and probably will always be, but now that LeBron is in Miami, I don't like D-Wade as much. Sorry D-Wade. Way to much drama, just play the game. You weren't like this before he showed up, go back to the man you were before he showed up.

I understand supestars are under intense scrutiny, but D-Wade has to know any thing he does, say, etc will become news. The media will take it as far as they can. There is no need to make these comical insults and then a day or a few days later try and put the blame somewhere else. D-Wade, you were much better than that, you still can be.

Just my two cents and opinion.

jharryheat, i agree with you on almost everything except the part where he got custody of his kids. it's called MONEY. If he's going to be paying millions of dollars in child support, he sure hell is going to gain custody of his kids, or let me rephrase it, if his ex-wife is going to get millions, he is going to get the kids, plain and simple ask Donald Trump. lol.

Dirk calls Sniffle-gate childish, ignorant

Hey everybody, let's take stock of what's going on here. I thought this post was about Wade and James acting like jerks. The mocking of Nowitski was something out of second grade. The line about the media "blowing it up" is simply bull. A sick Nowitski and the Mavs happened to win that game, didn't they? Wade and his sore hip didn't pull Game 5 from the jaws of defeat, so what can the Heat say now? If they don't win the next two games, a good portion of the basketball world will be making Miami Heat jokes for the entire summer.

Some of the people posting here have an axe to grind. Where does race play a part in this? Although it is easy to dislike the Heat, especially James, an idiot is an idiot, regardless of race.  There were no statements which indicate that race was a motivating factor in the mocking of Nowitski, it could have been the fact that the sick dude outplayed the two knuckleheads on the way to a Dallas victory. They were looking to take the"Heat" off of themselves for their subpar play in Dallas. But race....give it a rest. Being anonymous gives people the opportunity to spew garbage on a forum such as this. There is no place for it here. I guarantee one thing - there will be someone who will respond to this with more racist garbage. In this case, ignorance is not bliss.
