Cuban paying for the parade, might not do rings

MIAMI -- You just knew Mark Cuban would have to do something big, something different for the Dallas Mavericks first championship. His first two orders as trophy holder: The parade's on me and we're doing something better than rings.

Via ESPN Dallas:
Mark Cuban said championship parades and title rings just aren't his style, but the 2010-11 NBA champions will be riding floats through the streets of Dallas very soon.

And Cuban said he's picking up the tab.

"We'll do it," Cuban said early Monday morning. "All I told them was -- Terdema Ussery, our president -- you plan the parade. I'll pay for it because I don't think it's right for the city to have to pay for it. And let's just have some fun."

Remember all the problems last year in Los Angeles when the Lakers couldn't figure out what to do with the parade? It was going to cost the city millions and there was debate whether or not the team would have it. Cuban, being the completely awesome guy that he is, just said, "I've got it you guys." Say what you will about Cuban, but he's a terrific owner.

Then Cuban talked about the hardware. But he doesn't want to go the traditional route.

"I might not get rings," the Mavs' billionaire owner told NBATV. "Rings are old school. You've seen it before: There's guys who pick up the sweats and towels and they have these big, blingy rings. I'm like, 'Rings are done. It's time to take it to the next level.'"

If not rings, then what? Championship belts? Crowns? Necklaces? Golden sceptres? I wouldn't expect anything less from Cuban because, well, he's Mark Cuban.

But you know, if you don't get Dirk a ring, then how are Dallas fans supposed to win arguments now? They won't have the "Yeah but he's got a ring!!!" argument. I guess they'll just have to say, "Dirk is a top 10 player dude. He's got a sceptre now!" Actually, that's not all that bad.

I like Cuban ! He has a carefree don't give a damn attitude and he's about having fun and that's what missing in pro sports from the owners side ! Cuban isn't in it to make money ! He should pass some of what he has on to Jerry Jones, Dan Snyder and Paul Allen !

Cuban has had money long enough that he's enjoyed being wealthy without throwing in people's faces ! He wears jeans and tshirts and sneakes to games and high fives those who sit near him ! He doesn't care what color a person is as long as they along with him are enjoying themselves at the games that's all he cares about !

Kudos to Cuban ! I hope he buys an MLB team ! Baseball could use his charisma ! I'd even throw in a few grand to get started !

I will say this for Mark Cuban, he seems like a good guy who doesn't mind spending his money to get what he wants ! I also think it's generous of him to pay for the parade since so many other professional sports team owners pass the costs of arenas and parades on to the tax payers !

Kudos to Mark Cuban and congrats to the Mavs ! We need more non stuffed shirts non good ol boy network owners  ! Pro sports needs owners like Cuban who don't live in the 1950s !

Again kudos to Cuban !

Why the hell would the Mavericks, who have been whining that the spotlight has been on the Heat this whole time, get some stupid ass crown with something representing James, Wade, and Bosh on it? Talk about stupid. Your ring, or whatever they are going to do, is supposed to represent you, not who you beat.

JERRY JONES IS IN A CLASS BY HIMSELF, but unfortunately, the wrong one. mark cuban, who to me, its like a rebel with
a cuase, WINNING !!!!!! and at all cost and to pick up the tab for dallas' parade just indicates how serious mr.cuban and
committed to not just the mavs NBA, but the city of dallas and its community, as well. here in DC,  the new wizards' owner
is of very similiar cloth as cuban, but redskins' owner synder, well-this cat has not figured things out, yet and it shows on the field.
so eventually, owners will either lose thier minds and sale thier teams or thier end celebrating and hosting a championship parade

1.  Cuban has been the perfect owner this year--committed, emotionally invested, but smart enough to let his basketball people do their thing and not meddle (hear that, Facelift Jones?  Dan Snyder?).
2.  He took great pains not to give The Troll (Stern) cause to fix the Finals like he did in 2006.  Maybe he grew up a little and realized that less public exposure can be more productive.
3.  Letting Donald Carter accept the trophy from The Troll was a classy move, and let The Troll save face a little.
4.  Picking up the tab for the parade?  How many owners would do that?  So cool!
5.  My suggestion for the bling--A ring, yes, because that's easily worn and not necessarily ostentatious, but with the logo, "Five Beats Three".  I suggest also a golden crown for all concerned from coach Carlisle to the players to the front office, office staff, even the janitors--Five large points (for five players on the court), ten smaller ones (for the rest of the roster), however many small diamonds representing each team employee, and of course three huge rhinestones or cubic zirconia representing the Big Three.

Cuban paying for the parade, might not do rings

If I were a player, I would play for Mark Cuban in a heartbeat. He is the biggest Mavs fan there is and really cares about the team and obviously the city as well. Alot of other owners are stingy with their billions while Cuban has no qualms about investing it in the team and picking up the bill for a celebration for the city. As for the ring, it is a tradition, but I could see Cuban doing a really cool alternative.

Cuban paying for the parade, might not do rings

Without question, I've been a Mark Cuban fan well before he and his Mavs finally won their first NBA Championship. Mark came into the NBA as some type of a maverick to the chagrin and dislike of Commissioner David Stern, who reaped hundreds of thousands of dollars out of Cuban in ridiculous fines and whatever else he could think of to chastise the owner of the Mavs. But, not to be denied, Mark certainly "walks it, like he talks it", and in my book, he's what you call a "real man". Not even, the dictatorship of Stern, could bring down Cuban. He is the
epitome of what all owners should be like and he was finally rewarded for his effort and patience, by seeing his Mavs win the NBA title. Stern, must of had a sleepless night, when finally realizing that Mark was able to capture his first title. And, when I say his first, I believe there will be more before this decade is over. A class act all the way and if Jerry Jones would dismiss his title as the GM of the Cowboys
and let everyone do their respective jobs in his organization, he quite possibly could have had more NFL titles than what he has now. Letting former coach Jimmy Johnson leave because of Jones' ego was a very big mistake. "You reap what you sow" !!!

Yeah, Jerry Jones should be paying attention right now. The Mavs could make a run at Cowboy-esque universal appeal -- an America's Team of the NBA -- after this epic championship. I can see a repeat even. The Mavs are a very likeable team and Cuban is one of the most passionate owners in sports.

Is Jerry Jones paying attention to how the Mavericks won the championship, maybe he and Cuban should sit down and have a little chat
about how to own and run the Cowboys.
