MIAMI -- You just knew Mark Cuban would have to do something big, something different for the Dallas Mavericks first championship. His first two orders as trophy holder: The parade's on me and we're doing something better than rings.

Via ESPN Dallas:
Mark Cuban said championship parades and title rings just aren't his style, but the 2010-11 NBA champions will be riding floats through the streets of Dallas very soon.

And Cuban said he's picking up the tab.

"We'll do it," Cuban said early Monday morning. "All I told them was -- Terdema Ussery, our president -- you plan the parade. I'll pay for it because I don't think it's right for the city to have to pay for it. And let's just have some fun."

Remember all the problems last year in Los Angeles when the Lakers couldn't figure out what to do with the parade? It was going to cost the city millions and there was debate whether or not the team would have it. Cuban, being the completely awesome guy that he is, just said, "I've got it you guys." Say what you will about Cuban, but he's a terrific owner.

Then Cuban talked about the hardware. But he doesn't want to go the traditional route.

"I might not get rings," the Mavs' billionaire owner told NBATV. "Rings are old school. You've seen it before: There's guys who pick up the sweats and towels and they have these big, blingy rings. I'm like, 'Rings are done. It's time to take it to the next level.'"

If not rings, then what? Championship belts? Crowns? Necklaces? Golden sceptres? I wouldn't expect anything less from Cuban because, well, he's Mark Cuban.

But you know, if you don't get Dirk a ring, then how are Dallas fans supposed to win arguments now? They won't have the "Yeah but he's got a ring!!!" argument. I guess they'll just have to say, "Dirk is a top 10 player dude. He's got a sceptre now!" Actually, that's not all that bad.

Cuban paying for the parade, might not do rings

When Cuban become the owner of the Mavs he was the new breed made his money via the intra net. So he tried to change how owners acted which got the fans involed in Dallas but the old guard mad at him. This in turn allowed him to put the team he has together because he knew the fans would love them and cheer for them. So he has now grown into one of the best owners in the world but I think his ealier acts cost him his change to own a hockey team and baseball team in the last few years. So I hope the other leagues see this and know allow him to join there clubs.     Innocent

Cuban paying for the parade, might not do rings

Congrats to Mark Cuban and the World Champion Dallas Mavericks, for deflating the overpaid and overproud not so big 3 ...Dirk Nowitzki may not be as good as Larry Bird, or the GOAT Michael Jordan, but he showed how great he is by outplaying everyone in all the 4th quarters, not to mention injured and sick for at least one game. Mark Cuban may have his faults but he is the greatest owner in sports, he treats his team like the champs they are, and paying for the victory parade is pure class. I sure the heck wish he WOULD have gotten the Chicago Cubs but those old dinosaur owners blackballed the young whipper snapper, much to the detriment of baseball, and especially of the way too long suffering Cub fans. I guarantee with Mark Cuban owning them, the Cubs would sure the @#*% not be such a terrible team, in my book Cuban is great for his city, his team and most of all the fans who pay for it all.

Cuban paying for the parade, might not do rings

As far as owners are concerned I am still firmly in Donald Sterling's camp.

Cuban is really starting to turn things around off the court.  First, keeping quiet during the playoff run, then letting Donald Carter accept the trophy and now paying for the parade.  He built a great team that took down the "midsize 3" and deserves a lot of recognition and celebration.  Way to go MAVS!!!

Love him or hate him Mark Cuban is one the best owners in professional sports today.  I am still angry to this day that the owners my Pittsburgh Pirates wouldn't sell him the team,  look at what we could be folks.

I think a nice touch for the parade of the champion Mavs would be to have King LeLoser be the grand marshal--be the closest that LeDung gets to the real thing

Sorry Mark, but not doing rings is a bad idea. Rings can be worn visibly on the hand. Rings will stand the test of time and can be handed down as heirlooms. Few types of jewelry have the flexibility of a ring, although a nice Swiss wrist watch may but a suitable substitute. The best policy in this situation would be to let the players themselves vote on rings or something else. In the end it should be their decision.

Cuban paying for the parade, might not do rings

Considering this year he kept is classy and stayed out of the spotlight, I would expect it to be classy - stupid huge, but classy.  He is going to take care of his guys like no owner before him.  He is already taking care of the fans by paying for what is probably going to be the most lavish parade ever thrown in the history of the four major sports.

A win for the anti-establishment

My heartfelt congrats to Mr. Cuban and the city of Dallas.  Finally!  Somebody gets the championship despite it rubbing against every wish or hope that Commish Stern would have wanted.  Keep barkin' at the league for all of the crooked tricks they pull Cuban!  I hope you run for a decade!  signed - pooped out Kings fan.

Cuban paying for the parade, might not do rings

Even as a born and bred Texan I've never have been able to stand Mark Cuban. But I have to say his having Donald Carter accept the Larry Obrien NBA Championship trophy was truly a classy move. I also have to give him credit for keeping his mouth shut during the Mavericks run thru the playoffs as that too was smart.

Ok I've said all of the nice things I can say about Mark Cuban without throwing up on myself. But... if he and the Mavericks were to win again next year, I might have to start liking the guy! Now if this could only motivate Jerry Jones...
