Cuban paying for the parade, might not do rings

MIAMI -- You just knew Mark Cuban would have to do something big, something different for the Dallas Mavericks first championship. His first two orders as trophy holder: The parade's on me and we're doing something better than rings.

Via ESPN Dallas:
Mark Cuban said championship parades and title rings just aren't his style, but the 2010-11 NBA champions will be riding floats through the streets of Dallas very soon.

And Cuban said he's picking up the tab.

"We'll do it," Cuban said early Monday morning. "All I told them was -- Terdema Ussery, our president -- you plan the parade. I'll pay for it because I don't think it's right for the city to have to pay for it. And let's just have some fun."

Remember all the problems last year in Los Angeles when the Lakers couldn't figure out what to do with the parade? It was going to cost the city millions and there was debate whether or not the team would have it. Cuban, being the completely awesome guy that he is, just said, "I've got it you guys." Say what you will about Cuban, but he's a terrific owner.

Then Cuban talked about the hardware. But he doesn't want to go the traditional route.

"I might not get rings," the Mavs' billionaire owner told NBATV. "Rings are old school. You've seen it before: There's guys who pick up the sweats and towels and they have these big, blingy rings. I'm like, 'Rings are done. It's time to take it to the next level.'"

If not rings, then what? Championship belts? Crowns? Necklaces? Golden sceptres? I wouldn't expect anything less from Cuban because, well, he's Mark Cuban.

But you know, if you don't get Dirk a ring, then how are Dallas fans supposed to win arguments now? They won't have the "Yeah but he's got a ring!!!" argument. I guess they'll just have to say, "Dirk is a top 10 player dude. He's got a sceptre now!" Actually, that's not all that bad.

All I can say is that all of the old. stodgy baseball owners are IDIOTS for not letting this guy have an MLB team of his own.  He has stuck with it over the years, never sparing expense, and finally built a champion!  Great job and well deserved Mark Cuban!

As a White Sox fan I think it's really funny that MLB wouldn't even consider his interest in buying the Cubs.  Great choice MLB, Rickett's Cubs are great!  Cuban's a great owner, I wish he owned more sports teams but unfortunately most owners despise him.

once again the city of Arlington put up 300,000 and that was for the land. That is no place close to "most of" the cost of Dallas stadium. Oh and btw the seats where there, the NFL did not get them installed in time. The NFL rented the stadium from the Cowboys and the NFL was in charge of the whole mess, just as they have been for every SB. The NFL provides the field crew, and all modifications to the  stadium and other venues they are using.  The Cowboys were not responsable for the install of the seats. If you go back and read everything that was said the NFL even said that straight up.every seat sold was installed before the game, the NFL just did not get it domne fast enough to have the seats inspected, the seats were there, just could not be used. The Cowboys are one of the few NFL teams that actually own thier stadium, the rest all rent stadiums that the cities built for them, at no cost to them.

I agree with what a lot of you are saying. You may not like him but you have to admire his passion, loyalty and commitment as an owner to bring Dallas a winner.

If it were me I'd like the ring and a real cool Harley.

SKREFFTY, Perhaps you never read the article I posted for you the last time you said the cioty of Arlington paid for most of the stadium for Jones. It said the city of Arlington put 300,000 towards the stadium, thats less then 1/3 of the total cost. Where as the Krafts had thier whole stadium paid for by the city, you know the Patriots. The NO Saints play in a stadium they provided 0 dollars to. Dallas is the only stadium that was paid for by the owner. The city of Arlingtons 300,000 g??  that was the land.

Excuse me please but I'm confused.  Does this article really say that a billionaire sports team owner doesn't want the average Joe to pay for things for him?  If it does say that how will he feed his family?  Who will pay for his children's next doctors visit?  I'm concerned for his well being.  My reality seems to be upside down.

PS - Now I understand why other owners don't like him very much.
