Dallas Mavericks guard DeShawn Stevenson comments on his arrest for public intoxication. Posted by Ben Golliver. deshawn-mugshot

This morning, we noted that guard DeShawn Stevenson was arrested for public intoxication just two days after he won the 2011 NBA title as part of the Dallas Mavericks. Police reported that he looked drunk and didn't know where he was.

Stevenson disputes that story, telling Dallas television station KDFW (via ESPNDallas.com) that he was arrested for "no reason" and that he should have been treated better because he is a "champion."
"A couple cops came up to me, asked me was I drunk," Stevenson said. "I said no but I had a couple drinks. I guess he talked to somebody else and then he just put me in handcuffs for no reason.

"I always knew where I was at. ... I slept in a one-room cell for almost five hours, until my wife came and picked me up, and to me it hurts because that's not a way a champion should celebrate on his way home in Dallas, sleeping in a cell over a $400 fine," Stevenson told KDFW.
Just to clear things up in case there is some confusion among NBA players: Winning a title doesn't make you a diplomat with immunity. Laws still apply, and a ring doesn't equal a "get out of jail" free card.

Before his arrest, Stevenson had been on the ride of his life: trashtalking LeBron James, calling the Miami Heat actorsdenying that he has a Facebook, winning the title, partying on South Beach and wearing a shirt that said "How's My Dirk Taste?"

A cold cell can be such a buzzkill.

This is the same guy flashing gang signs as he runs down the court after a 3-pointer against Miami. Thug life thinking entitlement comes with championship. I'd have left them in there longer.

DeShawn Stevenson: I was arrested for 'no reason'

You know what you can't believe a word this guy say's, I have seen pro athletes having a so called good time and every1 i seen when they drink they drink. And act like total idiots, They act like they are better then any1 else, they act like there $hit don't stink, So i believe he didn't get arrested for his drinking but he was most likely being a smart a$$ to the cops. Like it or not I'm gona say Famous people think there above the world and should allways get special treatment, And when a police officer does his job and don't give therm special treatment they wiene and cry. Hey DeShawn there are prisinors in every jail in every state that say they didn't do it, I'm innocent, And ChiTownGator312 you wrote (  Being drunk in public is one of those things that is typically overlooked unless you are acting a fool. From everything I have seen, he was not. ) Everything you seen? Where you there when it happened? Do you have personal first hand knowladge? Because from what i read or seen on TV it was just what DeShawn said, his words, wich in my book don't mean Squat...Oh yea and last week i was going 70 in a 55 and a cop pulled me over for no reason, i didn't do it, it wasn't me it was the one armed man, Did i do that right DeShawn? Sorry i couldn't take your trash talking class, DeShawn BS talking 101.

not saying he didnt break a stupid law but alcohol is legal obviously there goin to drunk people...but its not like he was driving or making a disturbance or he would of been charge with public mischief..quotas have to be met ,jails have to kept full so private corporates profit from tax payer dollars($150-$200 to house prisoner for 1 day)..these day you can go to jail for anyting, pissing in public (nate robinson),
Okay, attrocious grammer aside, you should have stopped with "not staying he didnt break a stupid law" (but leave out the word "stupid").  Just because alchohol is legal does not mean public intoxication is legal--you admit that, whether or not you think that law is "stupid", you break the law, you go to jail (if the police are right, and I am a firm believer in innocent until proven guilty, then they could not just let a man that drunk just wander around, he's a danger to himself and possibly others if he stumbles into traffic or something).

As for the jail itself, actually very few are corporate owned/ran -- I have not heard whether or not this jail is in fact run by a private company or, as the vase majority of jails are, ran by the state, county or city.  In either event, there is no "quota" on the number of inmates that have to be jailed.

Piss in public, go to jail, sounds like a good idea to me.  I personally don't want to have to see people pissing or walk through their urine in the streets/sidewalks/etc.
