Dallas Mavericks guard DeShawn Stevenson comments on his arrest for public intoxication. Posted by Ben Golliver. deshawn-mugshot

This morning, we noted that guard DeShawn Stevenson was arrested for public intoxication just two days after he won the 2011 NBA title as part of the Dallas Mavericks. Police reported that he looked drunk and didn't know where he was.

Stevenson disputes that story, telling Dallas television station KDFW (via ESPNDallas.com) that he was arrested for "no reason" and that he should have been treated better because he is a "champion."
"A couple cops came up to me, asked me was I drunk," Stevenson said. "I said no but I had a couple drinks. I guess he talked to somebody else and then he just put me in handcuffs for no reason.

"I always knew where I was at. ... I slept in a one-room cell for almost five hours, until my wife came and picked me up, and to me it hurts because that's not a way a champion should celebrate on his way home in Dallas, sleeping in a cell over a $400 fine," Stevenson told KDFW.
Just to clear things up in case there is some confusion among NBA players: Winning a title doesn't make you a diplomat with immunity. Laws still apply, and a ring doesn't equal a "get out of jail" free card.

Before his arrest, Stevenson had been on the ride of his life: trashtalking LeBron James, calling the Miami Heat actorsdenying that he has a Facebook, winning the title, partying on South Beach and wearing a shirt that said "How's My Dirk Taste?"

A cold cell can be such a buzzkill.

DeShawn Stevenson: I was arrested for 'no reason'

This guy has always been a fool. He lucked out when they signed him and he could ride Dirk and Co. to a ring. Now he should be able to fade back into obscurity. If you are drunk in a public place it a reason for the cops to pick you up, and if you are rich get a cab. What a moron.

1st of all every pro athlete trash talk in every team sport its all about getting metal edge which seen to work cause lebron played like garbage...so i dont see how him trash talking has any relations to him gettin arrested...im pretty sure if it was dallas star player the cops would be giving high fives and thumbs up for helping bring championship to the city...not saying he didnt break a stupid law but alcohol is legal obviously there goin to drunk people...but its not like he was driving or making a disturbance or he would of been charge with public mischief..quotas have to be met ,jails have to kept full so private corporates profit from tax payer dollars($150-$200 to house prisoner for 1 day)..these day you can go to jail for anyting, pissing in public (nate robinson), man farting in direction of officer got charge with assault come on now lol... most of you poster are brainwash by the media and government so when you get arrested or go to jail for some stupid law dont be crying like bitches lmao

Haha this classless thug bastard spending some time where he belongs.  I doubt the Mavs re-sign him either.  For a scrub this guy talks a lot.  Even the most ardent Lebron hater has to admit Lebron is much better than this moron, both in terms of playing ability and in terms of character.  Lebron has never been arrested or committed any actual crime, he just says stupid things sometimes.  Stevenson actively seeks to annoy people and ridicule them, as well as commits actual crimes and then refuses to take responsibility.

I slept in a one-room cell for almost five hours
That quote says it all.  If he weren't drunk and instead arrested for no reason, he wouldn't have been asleep (passed out) for five hours in a jail cell.

Normally, they give fresh;y minted NBA champions a full suite, not a one room cell.  Oh, the lack of respect..

I'm sorry.. I was happy to stick up for Stevenson when the story was that he was drunk off his arse in public as just a simple harmless mistake..

Saying that he should have been treated with more respect because of winning the NBA Championship is a complete d!ck move, and I have zero respect for him.  He should take his mouth to South Beach and join the rest of his ilk with their crap attitudes towards the fans and the little people.

I disagree with Stevenson that he should be treated differently than other people.  In that same breath, unless he was staggering around or causing a disturbance, he should not have been arrested at all.  Being drunk in public is one of those things that is typically overlooked unless you are acting a fool.  From everything I have seen, he was not.
