DeShawn Stevenson: I was arrested for 'no reason'

Dallas Mavericks guard DeShawn Stevenson comments on his arrest for public intoxication. Posted by Ben Golliver. deshawn-mugshot

This morning, we noted that guard DeShawn Stevenson was arrested for public intoxication just two days after he won the 2011 NBA title as part of the Dallas Mavericks. Police reported that he looked drunk and didn't know where he was.

Stevenson disputes that story, telling Dallas television station KDFW (via ESPNDallas.com) that he was arrested for "no reason" and that he should have been treated better because he is a "champion."
"A couple cops came up to me, asked me was I drunk," Stevenson said. "I said no but I had a couple drinks. I guess he talked to somebody else and then he just put me in handcuffs for no reason.

"I always knew where I was at. ... I slept in a one-room cell for almost five hours, until my wife came and picked me up, and to me it hurts because that's not a way a champion should celebrate on his way home in Dallas, sleeping in a cell over a $400 fine," Stevenson told KDFW.
Just to clear things up in case there is some confusion among NBA players: Winning a title doesn't make you a diplomat with immunity. Laws still apply, and a ring doesn't equal a "get out of jail" free card.

Before his arrest, Stevenson had been on the ride of his life: trashtalking LeBron James, calling the Miami Heat actorsdenying that he has a Facebook, winning the title, partying on South Beach and wearing a shirt that said "How's My Dirk Taste?"

A cold cell can be such a buzzkill.

DeShawn Stevenson: I was arrested for 'no reason'

Same thing happened during the NCAA tournament, I had about 6/7 drinks and my apartment was no more than 300 yards(3/4 track) from the bar...and they cuffed me when they asked If had any thing to drink, I didn't make any kind of scene or anything, I was just walking home quiet... its ridiculous what they do in Dallas...BTW I'm 21 it's some BS what they do in North Dallas to ppl for jus drinking, it's not like I'm driving drunk

Easy there kojack2012; I'm not quite sure where you connect being hammerred to a dude that wants to plug the Mrs., the kids, and mom and pops. Correct me karjack 2011, but I never read anything that hinted @ the brother driving drunk. The poor dude was still wasted from a few nights of intense partying which any of us would have done. I would have stayed in South Beach if it was up to me.Chill Out my man!

DeShawn Stevenson: I was arrested for 'no reason'

There are some serious deniers here. The original news story indicated DeShawn "How does my Dirk taste: Stevenson was tested at the scene and determined to be seriously inebriated. It might not be difficult to see this from a policeman's perspective, along with inability or refusal to indicate his business in the complex where he was not residing, to deal with it as they did. We do not know the facts about his noise level, his belligerence (if any) and his presentation to the policemen. He will surely have opportunity to face a judge and have a legal hearing about the matter. That will be his time to speak.

As for speaking out now, he might have been too close to LeBron this past week and had some attitude rub off. He has not been the player on the Mavericks who conducts himself with class and dignity. Probably could learn some humility in that cell. Oh, and I wonder if Dirk would rather not have his name on your T-shirt.

Finally, it appears that American History and civics studies were wasted on DeShawn. In the USA being NBA champion does not affect your civic responsibility to conduct your public actions. You have exactly the same rights and responsibilities as every other person here. No special treatment is offered. I will agree with the wording DeShawn uses. He was apparently arrested because he had no reason. Reason is a good thing to have and maintain.

I believe the cops should of given him a ride home. Stevenson atleast had the sense not to start the ignition. Anyone who drinks who hasn't stumbled home atleast a few times when they were young is full of it. Let the kid enjoy himself.
