Report: Kings coaches did not want Jimmer

The Kings managed to take on John Salmons' salary for an aging player while giving up a veteran point guard on a reasonable deal and in return moved down three spots in the draft. They then used that pick to select Jimmer Fredette. Popular? Sure. Exciting? Absolutely. Bit of a reach? Totally. Fredette was going to go in the top-10 based on hype, not on translatable talent. There are concerns about his ability to translate to a point guard, and to defend bigger players. The latter concern is covered in Sacramento because Tyreke Evans is big enough to guard a moving house, but the Kings still need a distributor point guard and instead they have four ball-handling, scoring guards (Jimmer, Reke, Marcus Thornton, and John Salmons they traded for Thursday). And apparently, the Kings coaching staff was aware of that fact, and as a result, there was a rift over the pick. Ken Berger of reported before the pick went in that ownership wanted Jimmer, the coaching staff wanted Alec Burks. From Yahoo! Sports:
The Sacramento coaching staff isnt happy with the selection of Fredette, sources say. They wanted a veteran guard, ala Felton or Parker.

Ownership getting entangled in basketball decisions is almost never a good idea. Mark Cuban's highly involved, but he asks for what his trusted people's recommendations are and for the most part lets Donnie Nelson do his job. Interfering like this creates situations where you have to have a cagematch before each game to decide which one of your four guards is going to get 25 shots per game. But it will help ticket sales in Sacramento, so maybe that's the Maloof's plan, even if they don't want to keep the team in Sacramento.

All in all, a weird day in Kings-land that resulted in Jimmer Fredette winding up in a strange spot for his talents.

I wish Jimmer and the Kings much success.  As for NBA ownership making decisions based on "hype", this was not a fantasy NBA draft.  Why would ownership risk $millions on "hype"?  Sure, there are many reasons besides talent and skills for drafting Jimmer.  But to say owners drafted a player based on media bias is ridiculous.  I'm sure there are many BYU fans that will watch Jimmer play in the NBA.  But it's silly to be a fan of a player because of his religion.  I have no clue what church Michael Jordan, Majic Johnson, Charles Barkley or Metta World Peace or any NBA player past or present attend.

Report: Kings coaches did not want Jimmer

With the possible exception of King Jaffe Joffer, Ruler of Zamunda, Jimmer may very well prove to be the greatest King in history.

there is a new backlash against Jimmer. Oh, he cant distribute, oh he cant defend, etc.  I agree he will never be a great defender.  What does is shoot better than anyone in a half dozen years.  IS this worth the 10th pick? In this draft, absolutely. I think it makes an interesting rotation. Basketball writers tend toward simplistic versions of how offenses work. There have been teams with two SGs that won titles.....the alan houston knicks for example. There have been all manner of backcourts. The Kings are interesting. .... and so they got a small white shooting guard instead of Burks, who cant shoot, but gets to the line and has a mid range game.  If Burks is ok, then why isnt Jimmer? Burks plays less defense than Jimmer actually. So he might play shooting guard to Tyrke's point.  A rotation of Reke, Thornton and Jimmer sounds fine.  Salmons will likely be shopped.  But who knows.  I just wish those who know little of basketball werent always saying such dumb ass stuff........(most work for CBS).

How do you know Jimmer will not be at clubs with an entourage at 3AM, making it rain?  Do you personally know Jimmer?  I understand he went to BYU....where sleeping with your girlfriend will get you kicked off your team.  Does he seem like a decent guy....I guess so.  I am always amazed at how fans decide whether they "like" an athlete or how they come to the assumption that he is a "good guy."  A lot of athletes can speak eloquently and say all the right things when the cameras are present.  What an athlete does behind closed doors is anyone's guess.  Tiger had the whole nation fooled for years.  Joe Public is probably right more often than not, but, how do you know what a player's personality is really like?

The the last defunct league (ABA), Jimmer would have went to Utah, where everyone knows there is NO JAZZ, but lots of Mormons...who are more likely to buy tickets to watch "The Jimmer" than any other NBA city.

Jimmer was picked to get the Maloufs over to OC

The Maloufs want to get to Orange County.  Jimmer was picked for that reason.  There are a ton of Mormons with BYU connections in OC.  It's like little Utah in many ways.

The hats couldn't be more hideous.  Everyone is scaling down in this economy. Mr. Stern must have got a heck of a deal on them (and he wonders why he is booed ; ).  Wouldn't pay one penny for one nor would I be caught dead in one of them hats.
