Report: Kings coaches did not want Jimmer

The Kings managed to take on John Salmons' salary for an aging player while giving up a veteran point guard on a reasonable deal and in return moved down three spots in the draft. They then used that pick to select Jimmer Fredette. Popular? Sure. Exciting? Absolutely. Bit of a reach? Totally. Fredette was going to go in the top-10 based on hype, not on translatable talent. There are concerns about his ability to translate to a point guard, and to defend bigger players. The latter concern is covered in Sacramento because Tyreke Evans is big enough to guard a moving house, but the Kings still need a distributor point guard and instead they have four ball-handling, scoring guards (Jimmer, Reke, Marcus Thornton, and John Salmons they traded for Thursday). And apparently, the Kings coaching staff was aware of that fact, and as a result, there was a rift over the pick. Ken Berger of CBSSports.com reported before the pick went in that ownership wanted Jimmer, the coaching staff wanted Alec Burks. From Yahoo! Sports:
The Sacramento coaching staff isnt happy with the selection of Fredette, sources say. They wanted a veteran guard, ala Felton or Parker.

Ownership getting entangled in basketball decisions is almost never a good idea. Mark Cuban's highly involved, but he asks for what his trusted people's recommendations are and for the most part lets Donnie Nelson do his job. Interfering like this creates situations where you have to have a cagematch before each game to decide which one of your four guards is going to get 25 shots per game. But it will help ticket sales in Sacramento, so maybe that's the Maloof's plan, even if they don't want to keep the team in Sacramento.

All in all, a weird day in Kings-land that resulted in Jimmer Fredette winding up in a strange spot for his talents.

Look for one of the veteran SG to be traded for a vet PG like Parker (hoping).

At least we won't have to worry about him getting into trouble and being arrested.

As a Celtics fan I would HAPPILY take Jimmer as the 2 guard coming off the bench and when Ray Allen is ready to retire which should be in 2 years or o Jimmer would have filled out more physically, gotten to know Doc Rivers system and he could have eased into the 2 guard spot opposite Rondo.
There's still time Danny! Make a deal for your fellow BYU alum Jimmer! It'd also be GREAT to hear Boston fans yelling out "JIMMAH!!!"
I know plenty of guys in Boston named Jim who have the nickname Jimmer (Jimmah) so it's a natural!
Do it Danny! especially since the King's coaches don't know what they have much like how Red Auerbach stole Robert Parrish from Golden state for Joe Barry Carroll!

Still love the Kings though they left Kansas City long ago... It's going to be a good move, Fredette will be a good bench scorer for the gaurd rotation, he could develop into an excelllent passer in my opinion he was pretty good at that in college. Dell Curry played for 20 years and he could not guard my grandma.

Also to the idiot talking about white players missing in the NBA since Bird?!?!?! Ever heard of Dirk Nowitzki? Pretty sure he just won an NBA title and looked like the best player in the finals.

Referring to EVERY increment of time as "a minute" is incredibly stupid, by the way.

Jimmer is awesome, but lets get to the real story here.............the NBA Draft Hats!!!

I may be showing my age, but these must have been in a box somewhere hidden in the NBA office and lost since 1992!

I will buy one......when they go on discount at my local gas station.

Concern about Fredette defending "bigger players?"  How about concern about Fredette defending ANY players??? What a waste of a pick.

Maybe you're right.  Maybe right now Jimmer can't guard too many people in the NBA as effectively as he should, but you're ignoring a few things you shouldn't be.   How many guards in today's NBA can't play D? Answer: A lot.   How many of guards make allstar teams primarily because of their offense?  Tons.   A lot of NBA players in the history of the NBA have made a lot of money doing only one thing... scoring.

How many people are going to guard Jimmer once he gets settled in and gets a little experience?  The kid hits shots from almost anywhere on the court, he's that good.  I haven't seen too many kids in college that can hit a shot from as far as this kid can..... when he's hot he's deadly.

As for the Sac coaches letting it leak out they don't want Jimmer on their team, if I was the owner or GM I would fire their ass in a heartbeat. Yep, that's right, I said FIRED..... as a coach if you wanna say something to the GM or owner then go ahead.. but coaches have no right to do what these morons did.  Letting something like that leak out isn't a good thing at all... you don't play games with a kids head before he even takes his first shot in the NBA.... if I was Jimmer I'd tell the GM to start looking for trade partners.  Start looking for somebody that drafted after Sac that would love to have him on their team because I wouldn't want to play there if i was him.. they don't deserve him.
