Update (8:37 p.m.): On Wednesday afternoon, the Portland Trail Blazers confirmed that they have tendered a qualifying offer to Greg Oden.
"We've stood behind Greg Oden every day since he became a Trail Blazer and that continues with today's announcement," said Trail Blazers President Larry Miller . "Despite the setbacks he's experienced, he continues to be resilient in working tirelessly on his rehabilitation. We're all very encouraged with not only his progress, but with his commitment and determination to return to the basketball court."
From Yahoo! Sports:
Portland Trail Blazers officials have told Greg Oden’s representatives they will tender the center an $8.8 million qualifying offer to make him a restricted free agent, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. The Blazers have until midnight ET Thursday to give the qualifying offer.

The move isn't surprising, the Blazers have been rumored to be making this decision for months. It does send a signal, however. In doing so, the Blazers are asserting that Oden does not have enough long term injury questions to justify abandoning him to the market.

Oden has had microfracture surgery... on each of his knees. Think about that. The most severe knee procedure that players have performed on them, and he's had it on both knees. Amar'e Stoudemire is considered an injury risk because of one microfracture surgery five years ago. Chris Paul is questioned without having had said surgery. And Oden has had it on both knees and broke his patella.

So yeah, buyer beware there.

If Oden does receive an offer from another team, the Blazers will have seven days to match the offer. Usually, a team will frontload a contract to try and force the player's team to not match. But with Oden, they face the quandary of front-loading a contract for a player who is still recovering from injury, versus backloading a contract for a player with injury issues who may not be able to play, no, scratch that, definitely won't be able to play if he has another severe injury.

The Oden Problem is a tough one to figure out.

Hell I would wear a skirt. Oden is another bust. I still can't believe they drafted this guy over Durant. No hindsight who put the numbers up ? Durant. This is why the same teams win the same number of games and finish in their same position every year. Bust after bust. When does Portland wake up?

If you've ever seen the Blazer's bench, when he is there, which is not often, he is as much of a cheerleader as he is a healthy basketball player.

I can be a cheerleader in a suit for 8.8 million, heck even 0.8 million! That's all he'll ever be. On the plus side, he'll never have to pay for a meal in Columbus ever again.

Well, it appears the Blazers have figured it out Captain Cynical-they tendered him.

Utah should try to jack up the price for the Blazers since Portland did it / tried to do it with both Milsap and Wes Matthews.  I think it time Utah had some fun and gave them a dose of their own medicine.  That being said, over under for number of games this guy plays over the next 3 years (assuming there is basketball), let's say 82, I may be tempted to take the under though, good luck GO, hope you can kick the injury bug!

I am very surprised the Blazers offered $8.8 million.  I think Greg Oden still has a future in the NBA as a 23 year old kid but with all the injuries and lack of production to this point the money is absurd.  I do know when Oden is healthy he is capable of averaging a double doube and will block shots anchoring the defense.  With the new collective bargaining agreement being pursued $8.8 million is if the guy averages 18 points a game, 12 boards and 3 blocks per game.  Oden is very capable but he is being paid on potential and not reality.  Just another move by NBA owners that prove they are inept when it comes to money.  Granted centers are at a premium but I cannot see anyteam offering more than $6 millin a year.  I wouldn't be surprised if a Pacific Coast team makes an offer just to jack up the Blazers into spending more on the big potential.

are u kidding me, this guy was a bad pick from the start. he was injured at ohio state, the injuries continue to mount, he is slow and has a very weak offensive game with his back to the basket. he is worse than shaq from the line. to tender him a contract at almost 9 million dollars is a joke and o is this organization. they dont want to admit they messed up so thaer compounding it by bringing him back. im sure they can use that 9 mil to strenthing there team with a quality player not one that sits at the end of the bench in a nice overpriced suit.

A tough call. I hope it works out. He will not have a 15 year career but you hope he has a good 6-7 years.

No comparison between Oden and Bill Walton. Walton averaged more than 13 rebounds and more than 4 assists per game over his first four seasons. And won an NBA title. And an MVP.

Oden, if he gets healthy, could be Robert Parish type, maybe. But the "healthy" is a too big an "if" for most fans.
