Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant reportedly underwent platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy in his ailing knee. Posted by Ben Golliver. kobe-bryant

Over the last six months or so, we've been tracking any and all news related to the health and wellbeing of Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant.

Back in May, Lakers trainer Gary Vitti said that Bryant had an irreversible cartilage problem in his surgically repaired right knee. In January, Bryant said his knee was "almost bone-on-bone."

Interestingly, Vitti noted in May that the Lakers "know all the procedures all around the world that are available to him, and the appropriate decisions will be made."

On Thursday, the Los Angeles Times reports that Bryant underwent one of those procedures in Germany recently.
Lakers guard Kobe Bryant has taken an unusual step to try to strengthen his ailing right knee, undergoing an innovative procedure in Germany about a month ago, according to four people familiar with the situation who were not authorized to speak publicly.

The treatment is called platelet-rich plasma therapy. PRP procedures are less invasive than many surgeries involving the knee and are viewed as either an emerging solution to knee problems or a financial gamble on unproven science.
Portland Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy has undergone PRP therapy in his hamstring as well as both knees. Roy has questioned the effectiveness of the procedure and the medical community is not totally sold that PRP therapy by itself is effective.

PRP therapy injects a patient's blood into the area of concern to try to stimulate the body's natural healing abilities. It doesn't require an extended time away from physical activity and is quick and easy to undergo.

As of right now, players in the position that Bryant and Roy are in seem to think, "Why not? Worth a shot. I've got nothing to lose."

Report: Kobe Bryant underwent PRP therapy on knee

Kobe will be good to go come fall 2012 when the NBA gets started again.  He will play another two seasons after that and then have his statue in place outside of the Staples Center.

Go LAKERS!

As much as I don't like Kobe for the simple fact that he's the player people love to hate you got to respect his work ethic and love for the game. Kobe simply did this to keep his game at the most of his abilities at this age that he can and to continue playing the game he loves to try and get a ring or two before considering retirement. This lockout will deffinately benefit his recovery, smart move Kobe, smart move.

I've got to say, I'm very encouraged by this story. The fact that Kobe flew to Germany to have this questionable procedure performed indicates just how desperate Kobe is. Kobe will be 33 with bad knees when next season starts. You can have any procedure done that you want, but Father Time always prevails. The Lakers' are done winning championships with Kobe as their leader. If the Lakers' were smart, they'd try trading Kobe now before his body breaks down anymore. Normally, cheering someone's physical demise may seem extreme, but in this case, Kobe's slow demise makes me smile. Boy-oh-boy, is it great being a Celtics' fan!

Report: Kobe Bryant underwent PRP therapy on knee

Kobe is the greatest player of this era. He took the crown from MJ. Anyone who thinks Kobe sucks or is overrated doesnt know jack shit about basketball. This guys scores at will. Has every offensive shot. Plays ALL NBA DEFENSE. Watch him play defense. Lock down. He wins rings. 5. The guy plays a game so similar to the way MJ used to play. Kobe haters are just jealous. MJ had haters too, trust me I remember. Kobe is a Hall of Fame baller. And anyone who thinks differently is a stupid, jealous bitch. And if you think he actuall rapped that gold digging bitch, you're crazy. You ever see Kobe's wife??..Smoking hot. And anyways, why would Kobe Bryant have to force (rape) a woman to screw him??..Im sure he could get any broad in any bar or club to fuck him just by saying hello. Peace

When will the media folks ask the right questions?  Yes, you folks who have pointed out that this is a common procedure that can be done anywhere are correct.  It can.  I know two doctors here in LA personally who can do it for $100.  So why is Bryant flying to Germany?  You can ask the same question to Tiger Woods.  Why did he fly a doctor in from Canada to perform this common procedure?  That same doctor then got busted by the feds for importing PEDs.  You do the math.

You took the words right out of my mouth...guess I should've refreshed the page before commenting.  It really isn't any great mystery as to why athletes go across the borderline to have these "controversial" procedures done...

I can get PRP right here in Portland Oregon. I just go to my family physician and get it done. If I don't have insurance I can get it done for $300 out of pocket. I can't understand why this is considered so experimental everywhere else when I can name at least a dozen doctors off the top of my head that do it here.

Players go to places (especially Germany) for this procedure pretty much for one reason- so they can easily get some "HGH therapy" at the same time as the "headline" procedure...
