Pretty much everyone involved in The Decision has spent the last year taking a bit of a PR beating. Of course LeBron, but also Maverick Carter, ESPN and even the guy that did the interview, Jim Gray.

It's the one-year anniversary of The Decision so Gray joined the Dan Patrick Show, via CSN Chicago, to talk about that strange night at the Boys and Girls Club in Connecticut. One irk Gray has about the reaction from the special was that he walked out with a fat paycheck.

“I wasn’t going to be the only one to be paid,” Gray said.

And you're not going to believe this, but Gray also said he was surprised at the negative reaction to it.

Dan asked Gray what LeBron’s mood was like before. ”You could tell this wasn’t something easy for him,” Gray said. “It wasn’t jovial. There wasn’t any champagne or any corks going off. … I think it was a tough deal for him.”

Gray thinks it was harder than people realized for LeBron to leave Cleveland. “I think he tried his best to stay a Cavalier,” Gray said. “I think it was hard for him to recruit anyone….”

Dan asked if he could have a mulligan, what would he do differently. Gray said he wished that he explained why they were at the Boys’ and Girls’ club.

Yeah, because explaining why they were at the Boys and Girls Club would DEFINITELY have changed everyone's pespective. Because it wasn't already obvious enough that money was going to charity. Didn't matter though. People aren't stupid. Everyone could see through the facade of the goodwill. Yeah, it was a really nice gesture and something LeBron didn't need to do. But the idea of The Decision wasn't inspired to just make some money for a charity. There was always more to it than that. Hence the backlash.

Everyone involved in The Decision has spent the last year scrambling to recover a bit from the special, Gray being one of them. Reports were that he walked away with a massive payday from it, but he says he didn't make anything. Whatever the case, The Decision was a bad idea from the beginning and no amount of hindsight could really ever fix that.

Jim Gray talks The Decision, says he wasn't paid

Jim Gray is a dirtbag.  Lebron James is an egomaniac and both are naive for thinking such arrogance wouldn't have backlash. Gray really thinks if he had talked about the charitable aspects of the "decision" people would of just loved the two of them?  You just can't change people with egos that big.  Gray's comments that poor Lebron got a bad deal are proof of the ego he carries.  LeBron continues time and time again to open his big mouth and insert foot with stupid comments.  This is what sports have become little cry babies like Lebron that get teams and companies to kiss ass to for a buck.  The fans should expect better and even if Lebron's teams win titles he will always be   a little baby always defined by the decision.

Jim Gray talks The Decision, says he wasn't paid

Let's be real. Jim Gray is a jerk and LeBron and Maverick Carter viewed this cat as the one guy who could emcee the debacle with some appearance of a credible journalist. Who else would expose themselves as a whore to James and the boys? Gray asks weakly for the answers, but we all know he was in on the gag! One painful year later shows a LeBron with millions more hating the dude and Gray being sentenced to ESPN Purgatory.(ESPN Salud or ESPN U) I've heard of these channels but never have stumbled across them; even when I've spent a fall Saturday downing multiple Coors Lights!

Jim Gray talks The Decision, says he wasn't paid

I think it's interesting you bring up steroids...in this day and age, how do you know? Virtually every player in baseball who has been physically greater than everyone else was found to cheat. And isn't physicality LeBron's greatest asset? And, not for nothing, but he did go from coddled private high school life (where they were making money off him and I'd be shocked to hear there was legitimate testing done), skipping college and whatever scrutiny there would be here, and jumping to the NBA where he's been a marquee name and above the law (we all know how Stern operates) since the jump. Obviously no proof, but I think it's interesting to automatically assume such a guy is clean. BTW, I do admit to hating on The Decision, but I love LeBron as a player.

Jim Gray talks The Decision, says he wasn't paid

Jim Gray is a weasel. I lost all respect for him when he interviewed Pete Rose many years ago.
I totally hear you on that.  The Rose moments are unforgettable .... however, with Rose now admiting it - wasn't Gray partially correct in the end (just ill timed in bringing it up when he did)?

Jim Gray talks The Decision, says he wasn't paid

I moved past the decision.  It was an event that was one of the biggest we have seen on TV.  I understand it was not a great game nor a great play, but it had drama and tons of speculation.  That made the decision great.  IT is time to judge LeBron for his play.  He did nothing wrong except for his taste.  He did not use steroids, cheat on his wife, hurt someone physically.  He changed teams.  WOW!  I think far more about LeBron than I did that night.  His play on the court is what we should judge and that play, at times, is the best in the league.  Other times, no.  As for Jim Gray, hey he did the job  That is it.  I do think he is a tool and comes off as a rat.  But, hey, it was his decision also.

Jim Gray is a weasel. I lost all respect for him when he interviewed Pete Rose many years ago. It was only fitting that he would be involved in LeBron's Decision fiasco.

Jim Gray talks The Decision, says he wasn't paid

My only question is what is Jim Gray doing on the Dan Patrick show?  Is Dan Patrick lowering himself to Gray's level?  I didn't hear the show, but I hope Dan said, "Jim, we don't believe a word you say."
