Pretty much the second Shaquille O'Neal announced his retirement, speculation started as to what his next career venture would be. Of course there's the policeman route, the movie star route, the reality TV star route, the music route or the natural fit, the broadcasting route.

According to Darren Rovell of CNBC
, Shaq's going with the latter, for now. Rovell tweeted, "Sources have confirmed that Shaq has agreed in principle to join Turner."

It really was just a question of where Shaq would go. With his big personality, popularity and knack for being great on camera, it really was going to come down to ESPN or Turner. And with Shaq choosing Turner, that just means the best is only getting better. With Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley and Chris Webber -- who was terrific in his first year as an analyst -- Turner has the market cornered on excellent NBA studio commentary.

Now of course there is a chance that Shaq might not be as wonderful as we're anticipating. TNT's "Inside the NBA" is great for a lot of reasons, but mainly because Barkley is so candid and works well with Kenny and Ernie, being funny but also providing solid basketball analysis. The challenge for Shaq will be to pull off what Barkley does so well in being funny and silly while also being able to get down to talking some serious basketball. I'm not entirely sure Shaq is capable of that.

There's always a fine balance between being yourself and trying too hard to be great on TV. Shaq's funny and smart enough on his own not to have to try hard to be great in a studio setting, so unless he really presses, he should be terrific.

I'm just assuming that Shaq will be part of "Inside the NBA" while he may actually do his own thing. He's certainly capable of it. Shaq has such a big personality that he's must-see-TV all by himself almost. But if he can harness that personality and charm and add in some good basketball talk, "Inside the NBA" will only be better.

Now all that has to happen is there needs to be a season for them to talk about.

Report: Shaq to join Turner

The allegations were that he had sex with this woman at a Crip Gang member's house.  Even if the video is erased, there is still the fact that Shaq could be called to testify about whether there was sucha video.

Don't make this into a race thing.  That's just stupid.  What I'm saying is, you don't go and have sex with a woman at just some random house when you're an NBA star.  You have sex at a place you trust or a hotel.  If he is having sex at a Crip gang member's house, well guess what?  That means he knows the owner, is friends with the owner, and trusts the owner.  That's what is called a "connection to a gang member."  I think it's weird to have sex at someone's friend's or acquaintance's house but hey, that's their deal.

Get it now?  This isn't some childhood friend.  Shaq grew up in Louisiana dude!  Shaq had no LA connections before he played for the Lakers.  These alleged connections would have been made while he was a full-blown adult.

No human should be a role model?  Wow...you must not have thought highly of anyone when you grew up.  I'm sorry you grew up that way.

I got stuck on the part where he says Chris Webber was terrific in his first year. If you think Webber is terrific then you either don't watch much sports on TV or you are a Fab 4 fan. Webber was horrible and actually made the show a little worse. Leave him on NBA tv please.

As for Shaq hopefully he's not on too much, I think Barkley Earny and the Jet have the right blend and Shaq would make the show too goofy. Bring him in occasionally because too much would result in a show that's as bad as the one with Stuart Scott and Magic Johnson....just horrible.

It reminds me of of when Oscar Robinson was a broadcaster. He was terrible. "That was great play, wasn't it Oscar?" "Uh, yes, it was, Brent."

Shaq is neither articulate nor does he enunciate his words properly. As someone said, he mumbles. I can't see how he can be perceived as a good fit as a broadcaster. His size is no advantage in this arena. I do agree that Chris Webber was exceptionally good as a broadcaster.

Shaq was NEVER charged with anything nor is he under investigation, as far as the tape goes ; reports say the tape was either erasesd or recorded over take that for what you want.

As far as him having gang connections? that's a bit of a stretch. Here let me break it down for you when you're BLACK and come from the ghetto sometimes you make these things called FRIENDS, while not friends choose the same path in life sometimes they still remain friends. but you living in your little WHITEBREAD world probably don't understand that. Am i excusing the fact he had an affair? NO. but that is between him and his spouse (or ex-spouse).

besides this all happened THREE YEARS ago, and meeting CRIP GANG members at a toy drive does NOT constitue having "CONNECTIONS" so he knew a guy that was in a gang. THe guy who was allegdy kidnapped and beaten was also known to asociate with the criminal element, because he lived or worked in that area.

so what i'm saying is dig a little deeper befoere you go spoutin off, and as far as ROLE models go. NO HUMAN should be a role model because WE ARE ALL FLAWED!

Will Turner provide sub-titles so we can actually understand what Shaq is mumbling?

Shaq would be a beathe of fresh air. Maybe, he'd tell that loud-mouthed Barkley off. Shaq will look like a Rhodes Scholar, next to that imbecile Barkley. He can also flash his 4 NBA rings whenever Barkley goes off about big-game performances. Barkley can't flash anything other than a grimace and his inarticulate "that's turrible."

Shaq has a sense of humor, hasn't throw a guy threw a plate glass window, nor stated "That's why I hate white people" on national TV. Shaq is amiable and self deprecating. Barkley is ignorant and grating. A perfect combo. The white hat vs the black hat. The likeable guy, vs the dumbarse loud-mouth. To quote Bart Scott, "Can't wait!"

Shaq has his faults and is far from an angel. However, his public persona is entertaining and non-threatening. He's the perfect guy for a pre-post game show. He also knows quite a bit about basketball and understands winning.
