Kobe Bryant defends LeBron James

Kobe Bryant is definitely your newsmaker of the month. After reportedly telling those close to him that there is a "zero percent chance" that he plays for Besiktas in Turkey next year, then scoring a goal on a PK in a charity soccer game, the Black Mamba sat down with ESPN's SportCenter for an interview. He was asked about the ridiculous amount of attention that has been heaped on LeBron James, most of it negative. Here's what he had to say about most hated NBA player of his time, from IamaGM.com:
George Smith: There was a lot of venom towards the Heat and, in particular, towards LeBron James  What did you make of that?

Kobe Bryant: I think people need to lay off that kid.  That's what I think.  I've gotten to know him pretty well playing with the Olympic team.  I think people need to just back-off off him.  Just let him play.  Let him live his life.  Let him make his decisions.  Let him mature as a player.  It's tough to be under the microscope like that all the time.  So, I would like everybody to just kind of back-off off him and let him play.

If anyone knows what it's like to have an absurd amount of criticism surround you because of your on-floor (and off-court) activities, it's Bryant. It's a nice departure from the public umbrage Bryant has taken with the claim of James usurping him without a single ring. James buries himself in his hole with his words and actions; he's a terrible manager of his public image despite having a team devoted to just that. But the level of vitriol surrounding James has become absolutely overwhelming and lost all perspective.

Lakers fans are particularly effusive about their dislike of James out of a misguided sense of loyalty to Bryant, just as Chicago fans have come to hate James in comparing him to Rose, and so forth. It's unlikely Kobe's comment will somehow come as the word of the sports messiah and calm their bile, but it's a nice sentiment.

On the other hand, James has largely built this for himself. This is his empire of dirt, and until he begins to rehabilitate his image on the big stage (despite his numerous charity appearances this summer which no one will note), he'll have to keep its throne.

That's Kobe, always classy.  Like we bought his wife's forgiveness with a 4 million dollar rock and when he bought off the girl he raped in Colorado for another couple mil.  Always classy Kobe.
Did your former coach Tressel tell you this in secret???

She had the choice to take him to court. And besides, when does house keeping start at 2 or 3 in the morning(don't remember the exact time it occurred). Guess it's been a while since I stayed at Resort. His wife also had the opportunity to divorce him, she didn't.

Get over yourselves people. Why did a decision and a demonstration meant to enliven fans and get people excited for the season feel so personal to all of you?
I could careless, but it's his actions, and everything else he does that turns people to hate LeBron. It's not anything personal, because he probably hasn't met 95+% personally. Alot of this turned in his 1 hour "the decision", I didn't watch sorry LeBron. Then claiming 5, 6, 7 or whatever amount of rings. Then picking on Dirk in the finals for being sick. But, as many predicted he faded in the finals when it came to crunch time, that adds even more fuel to the fire. Let alone all the TV time he gets during the game, going to and coming back from commercials. He knows what he's doing and just craves attention. He's just a little kid who hasn't grown up.

Really people should hate the media and not the player. It's the media causing a good majority of this hatred. It was the same for Jordan, one of the best ever, but hated by a lot. Why the media made sure we knew where he was and what he was doing each and every moment.

Just my two cents.

The microscope is something that comes with the Spotlight that LeBron James has been begging more of since he left grammar school. It isn't going to go away, and unless he stops acting like a spoiled, entitled brat, people are going to continue hating on him.

I am by no means a LeBron fan....I can not stand the guy and his arrogance.  But he does quite a bit for charity, and that needs to be acknowledged.  Well said and good final comment, Matt Moore.

Awwwww.....ain't that nice for Kobe to take-up for LBJ during the interview, but LBJ's a "big boy" and I'm quite sure that he can take care of himself. LBJ just need to know when and when not to say something as well as what to say or what not to say while being interviewed by reporters.

And pretty much every post on here proves the writer's point. People no longer care what he does or how he does it, it will always go back to bad decisions made when he joined the Heat.

Get over yourselves people. Why did a decision and a demonstration meant to enliven fans and get people excited for the season feel so personal to all of you?

Every year the Jets talk allllll year about how they are going to win the SB, how they are better than everyone and then lose and there's not nearly as much hate toward them as this individual guy. I don't know if you realize this, but Wade, Bosh and the entire Heat organization took part in that "unveiling" before the season. Not just Lebron. They put on a show for their fans and promised championships...what fanbase doesn't want that? The fact that he didn't pick your team doesn't equal kicking every one of you in the nuts, it equals picking the team he thought he'd do best with. Get over your need to hate someone.
