In just a few short months, Jereme Richmond has gone from the brink of the NBA to the clink.

Richmond, a 6-foot-7 and 210 pound forward from the University of Illinois, was a fringe prospect in the 2011 NBA Draft. He had thrown his name into the mix after playing just one season for the Illini and ultimately wasn't selected on draft night.

Just two months later, DailyHerald.com reports that Richmond is behind bars after allegedly beating, threatening and spitting on his teenage girlfriend according to Stephen Scheller, the prosecutor in the case.
Richmond, 19, and Matthew Riley, 22, of North Chicago, were arrested Monday afternoon outside the victim’s house after police found a loaded .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol in the car the men had driven.

On Sunday, Scheller said, the woman drove to Richmond’s residence in the 2000 block of Arthur Drive in Waukegan to retrieve her cellphone. The two began to argue outside Richmond’s house, Scheller said, and Richmond shoved the woman back into her car during the ruckus. Monday afternoon, Scheller said, Richmond and Meyer drove to the woman’s house and Richmond began to argue with her again as her mother looked on. At one point, Scheller said, Richmond spit on the woman and said he was going to shoot her.

That is just unbelievably sad and horrific.

Richmond averaged 7.6 points and 1.8 assists in 31 games for Illinois. ESPNChicago.com notes that Richmond was suspended for the team's tournament games due to "an athletic code violation."

He becomes the latest poster child for what if a player attempts to make the NBA jump too early without sound advice. "I definitely have a long ways to go in my development," Richmond admitted to DraftExpress.com in a pre-draft interview. "I'm one of the youngest guys in the draft."

Asked why he declared for the draft after just one season, Richmond replied: "I felt that I was ready. I didn't average what some of the teams would have liked to see me average but I think a trained eye would know that if I got around the setting and was receptive I could flourish."

He's now more likely to languish than flourish. DailyHerald.com reports that Richmond is looking at "up to 14 years in prison" for his actions.

Ronnie Fields suffered a brokem neck in a car wreck in 1996 which was his senior year of high school I believe. He had to wear the good old Halo headgear for awhile while recuperating. Not quite sure that he deserves to be put in a class with Richmond. I don't really remember him being a pain to deal with and never heard of him being classless like Richmond appears to be.

Please don't ever put Jereme Richmond's name linked to Ronnie Fields. Richmond is a punk and has no self discipline as a basketball player or a human being. He is what we call "OVER RATED"!!!

good call on Ronnie with KG - saw them play at Proviso West and Ronnie made some amazing dunks - great to watch - but, do you not remember Ronnie getting caught in someone's closet watching a sexual encounter?  Think that puts him in a bit of the same category with JR - do like your comments about putting him on the straight and narrow - we are all talented in some way and a shame for one to waster his/her talents

I feel like Nostradamus right now. I said when he declared that he would not get drafted and get into trouble with the law like Fields or another past player, Frank Williams. I had no idea that my prediction would come true so soon. Richmond is just an a*****. He has a long history of technicals, getting into fights, getting suspended, etc.

For those who have followed Illinois High School BBall for awhile, does this bring back memories of another would be "great" - Ronnie Fields?
Ah, Ronnie Fields...the Robin to Kevin Garnett's Batman at Farragut.  Then again, in high school one could've made the argument that Fields was the best player in the state.  I still remember Aurora West beating Farragut in the state final in KG/Fields' senior year, because no other Farragut player could do anything with the ball.  It really underlined just how dominant those two were together that Farragut even made the final, especially with the relative ease they did.

It's hardly fair to compare him to Jereme Richmond as a person, though.  Fields had a car accident in '96, then was ruled academically ineligible at DePaul.  However, unlike Richmond, Fields has made a living playing pro ball (albeit at the second tier), and enjoys a much better reputation throughout the game.  Now, Richmond is 19, and a nice blend of contrition and success would effectively rewrite his currently trashed legacy.  But, the problem is he's never really had his head on straight to begin with.  Maybe this arrest will help.

BYE BYE LOSER!!!  Really what is wrong here?  I will bet anything that Weber knew this guys was a P.O.S. before he put on a uniform, yet they gave him one.  Lets tell the truth, Illinions (as well as many other schools) will play players who are dirtballs, rather than no sign them at all.  I bet every major team has at least one guy who is a head case, who thinks he is too good to be there, and in all reality should not even be in college.  Institutions/Coaches, please do the right thing, that is if you can remember what the right thing is.
