If you were in the "I'll believe it when I see it crowd" with regard to New Jersey Nets All-Star guard Deron Williams' decision to play professionally in Turkey, you can officially believe it.

Williams made his debut for Besiktas on Saturday, just two days after arriving in Turkey, where he was mobbed by fans at the airport. Besiktas defeated Italian club Montepaschi Siena, 93-91, in a touranment in Italy. Williams finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and six assists in 18 minutes of action according to NetsDaily.com.

Reacton to the first game was positive from both player and coach.

Williams explained on Twitter that his appearance wasn't necessarily planned.
Went to the gym to watch the team play today! Shot around for a couple min and then decided to play and got a [Win]! #WhyNot
A translated TotalBasket.com quoted Williams' coach calling him "the biggest player in Europe."

Besiktas coach Ergin Ataman [said about] Deron Williams, the new star for the team after the game on Twitter, "I have seen so far the biggest player in Europe."

Back in Nov. 2010, former NBA All-Star Allen Iverson lost in his debut appearance for Besiktas. By January, reports surfaced that Iverson would leave Besiktas due to a leg injury.

Now that the "Will Williams actually show up in Turkey?" question has been answered, attention turns to the obvious next question: "How long will he last?"

The foreign leagues tend to be quite interesting since they work more on subtle communication and positioning.  Clealry the NBA level of raw talent isn't there, but they would beat all hell out of the best college teams.  Fun for a change, but a lot less "show-time".

If you need your basketball fix, watch college. Who needs the Thug Basketball Association. I can't believe people throw away good money to watch something that looks like the Harlem Globetrotters League on an episode of COPS!

Nooo, it wouldn't be greed, just business. The owners , a smart group of guys who made their money selling steel siding and Zamboni's are not very likely to offer to show Fisher the books though. Just you. Well that is great for you and the owners to low ball the players. You can just go back to the player factories and buy a newer shinier version that should be cheaper this year. Better but cheaper every year. Why isn't it just "good business" from the players side of the table and what's the deal with the Zamboni ice machines? Is there a plan to have the game played on ice? It may be time the players look into a PR bureau or some hot to screw everybody lobbyist firm from K Street.

You say greed, but the Owners are losing millions of dollars. I would call it more survival than greed from the Owner`s standpoint.

He'll last as long as the NBA lockout goes on (which will likely be the WHOLE season, but that's just my opinion). Glad to see Deron Williams honour his contract. I had hoped that other countrie's pro leagues like Turkey and China wouldn't just be used as a pawn in the CBA discussions. (ps- Good on China for taking a firm stand on the issue). I'm glad Deron showed up, and hey... it gives us true basketball fans something to read about while they are trying to settle this ridiculous lockout. Deron is playing and making a few bucks... what the heck, other than the superstars making their PR deals, how many players in the NBA are making money playing ball right now? As long as he doesn't get hurt (knock on wood), then this stint oversears will do nothing but expand his global market, while other stars are sipping on Starbucks Java's and wondering what to do with their morning....

Deron Williams is going to start a trend after this showing. The positives outway the negatives in this situation. He gets to get his name out more in europe and worldwide, hes playing the game he loves, and all while making some money. Sounds like a good deal to me.
