NBA commissioner David Stern announced on Tuesday that the league would cancel the rest of its preseason schedule effective immediately and expected to cancel the first two weeks of the 2011-2012 regular season on Monday, Oct. 10, as a result of a lack of progress in ongoing labor negotiations between the league and the National Basketball Players Association.

"Today we will be announcing the cancellation of the rest of the exhibition season and by Monday we will have no choice but to cancel the first two weeks of the season," Stern said. Back on Sept. 23, the NBA announced the cancellation of the first two weeks of the preseason.

The NBA's regular season was supposed to start on Nov. 1.

NBPA executive director Billy Hunter said that the two sides do not currently have any further negotiating meetings scheduled and that the next meetings might be "a month or two months" away.

Here's video of NBA commissioner David Stern cancelling the preseason and the likely delay of the regular season.

Nobody cares. The season is too long to begin with and it starts during the NFL season and Ends just as baseball is getting into full swing. I would rather watch the college hoops games any day. They are more intelligent players anyways.

The NBA had a pre-season?

Why worry about the NBA now? The season doesn't start until after the Super Bowl, right?

Enough is enough, I, for one, HAVE moved on and away from these players who demand "bazillions" of dollars !!     I cannot wait for the Replacement Players to arrive, be it High School, college or even Grade School because THESE are the players who play for the game, for the love of the GAME !!!!

People that post in this venue that are non-NBA fans should take their own advise and go away. The NBA already has enough people that don't understand the issues shooting their mouths off.

The bottom line is, what the market will bear is about $80-$100 million a year below where the players want it to be. Welcome to the 2011 economy, gents.

The NBA has had more patience with players than is deserved. In fact, owners caving in to unrealistic demands, overpaying players while overlooking players (and their own) irresponsibility, has created the false perspective that there is always more money on the table, and some players are bigger than the league.

If the players won't agree to terms that give the league a chance to be healthy, no court is going to side with players...especially when they average salary is already on par with MLB and NFL players, and 80% of NBA teams show a loss. The NBA should go forward with replacement players...personally, I would go all in- and issue a LIFETIME BAN for players not back by a deadline date to be determined...and stick to it. Players would hustle back quicker than they ever have on defense... The stars and their agents that brewed this issue, don't want to go to Europe, they want to stay in the the U.S., where they not only make more money, but have the star power they crave.

Delays and cancellations of seasons don't draw fans...and sadly, the fans ultimately pay everyone in the NBA....or none of them, if they choose so.... Something everyone invloved in this ridiculous situaton better start considering.

I would look forward to a season without NBA basketball.  I used to be a fan but the game is now just an ego trip for tatooed athletic freaks making millions and not really carrying about the tremendous costs now incurred by the fans to see a game.  It is no longer family entertainment and time to just start from scratch.  This reprieve from the NBA will just give more focus to college basketball.  Please just cancel the entire season.
