There are billions of dollars at stake in the ongoing NBA labor crisis, and the politicians and lawyers are circling in the water like sharks.

MyFoxMemphis.com reports that the city of Memphis, home to the NBA's Grizzlies, is investigating its options with regard to the ongoing lockout, including litigation against the league to recoup up to $18 million that would have been used to pay off arena bonds for the publicly-owned FedEx Forum.
At the suggestion of Chairman Myron Lowry, the council is considering a resolution that would ask City Council Attorney Allan Wade to explore all options, including a lawsuit against the NBA.

Wade says this is the first city he's heard of considering this type of action. "If it gets to be half a season that's a big problem. If that thing sits idle for a whole season that's a big problem," he said. "I think that goes against the spirit of our agreement because our arena is built with revenue, not guaranteed money."
The site reports that the resolution passed by a vote of 8-3.

To boil this down: a portion of the money generated during home Grizzlies games at FedEx Forum goes back to the city to help pay off the original financing of the arena. If there are no home games there is no revenue with which to pay back the city. The city wants its money and could decide to sue the league to get the money at some point in the future. Good times.

Ken Berger of CBSSports.com reports that NBA spokesman Mike Bass says the league has "no comment" on the matter.

It's worth noting that this type of legal action could theoretically happen in any other city that has a publicly funded NBA arena.

Here's MyFoxMemphis.com's video report.

Quite Simply - No Need for the NBA - NCAA Better

Quite simply, College Basketball is more exciting and more entertaining than NBA basketball.  We don't need the NBA AT ALL, especially with its overpaid, selfish players.

I live in Memphis and always have and I am ashamed at the way the city is acting, it sounds like an idea Jethro Bodine would come up with.

The logic behind the stupidity of the lawsuit is the revenue and jobs lost by thr businesses in the downtown Memphis area. but emphis just comes off looking stupid in the eyes of the nation.

But now, as for you dissindalet, you deserve to rot in hell for making comments about flooding the city and all. That is cold and heartless and uncalled for. There are people who live here and your comments are evil, stupid and unneccessary. Go get a heart.

You are right Heels, the Players are every much to blame as the owners. They both should take responsibility and get it worked out.

I guess you forgot in your profile where you put you were from Memphis, IN.

Epic fail? 3-3... 0-6. I'd say we are doing fine. You sure do love the word epic, and the only thing that is epic is how horrible the Colts are without Manning. It's sad how pitiful that team got so fast just by losing one guy. Spray painter isn't cuttin it. Disappointing we don't get Colts/Dolphins in the season finale. Now that would be... EPIC.

You go City of Memphis!  Might want to add the NBAPA to the suit since they are just as much at fault.  Make the two (NBA and NBAPA) split the cost of covering your missed-out-on revenue 50/50.

The NFL owners put in lockout insurance in their TV contracts stipulating that they would get money even if the games weren't paid.

My question is, with all the money the city of Memphis and the Grizzlies spend in lawyers, they didn't put provisions of a lockout/work stoppage in the arena contract?
