Allen Iverson wants back in the league, any way

Pride goeth after the fall, apparently, and after the Answer, as it turns out. Two years ago, Allen Iverson signed on with the Memphis Grizzlies for less than a month before his ego and attitude got him booted. The Grizzlies went on to have one of their better seasons in franchise history, setting up this year's playoff run. Iverson, on the other hand, went to Turkey the following year, but again, wound up pulling out after personal problems derailed him. He suffered through a severe illness with his daughter, and also started the process of divorcing his wife.

So, no, it has not been a great couple of years for A.I..

But Iverson's back in the states, putting together an All-Star exhibition in Las Vegas, and as part of its promotion, he's also talking about how he wants back in the league. He spoke with Yahoo! Sports and wanted to let the world know that he's past the point of thinking he deserves anything. He just wants a spot, any spot, with any team.
“I’ll play for anybody,” Iverson told Yahoo! Sports.

Iverson says he has no serious offers from any teams overseas right now. He added that playing overseas also gave him a stronger appreciation for the NBA since it took him away from his family and “the highest level [of basketball] in the world.” He also says he’ll be willing to come off the bench and a reserve role even “makes it easier for me.”

“Obviously, they might have some issues thinking I don’t want to help a team in a certain capacity,” Iverson said. “But that’s over with. All that was going on through an emotional time. It cost me to not play. I’m just willing to help any squad in any capacity.

“Hopefully, one squad will believe in me and we will go from there. That would be a lot better than having to go overseas.”

Iverson's 36. He's not a distributor. It's hard to see where he would fit in with a team concept. Due to his size and age, even a team like the Celtics would be reticent to invest in him. It's going to be difficult finding a team willing to take a chance on him. It would be great if he were to get that shot, though, if only to put anything close to a better ending on such a storied career. The interview also has Iverson talking about "not being there, mentally" the last few years, but the problem is convincing teams those times are over. That kind of element is a black mark on a scouting report.

We'll see if the Answer can get the one he's looking for.

Allen Iverson wants back in the league, any way

AI is a good example of why this lockout is so ignorant...delaying the inevidible that players CAN'T do any better than the offer they already have, not appreciating how lucky they are for having the opportunity to play in the NBA, AND why players WON'T hold out long without a paycheck- the money goes through most of them like water.

Maybe AI just doesn't have anything but basketball...maybe he's low on funds...or both. He probably had the biggest ego for a little guy in the NBA- It's why he wouldn't take a bench role, even though his age and injuries diminished his skills well below capability to be more than a role player.

I wasn't an AI fan, because it was all about him, all the time. Not a fan of a guy that would put up 30 shots a night, half from 30 feet while double teamed with a teammate open in the paint, only hit 1/3 of them, and he was too good to show up for practice. He may have had lots of jewelry, but was real short on rings that said "NBA Champions"... and it had a lot to do with the fact the Sixers couldn't find enough talent willing to play with him to win more. He WAS unpretentious though, he didn't try to hide he was a selfish punk, and expected everyone to accomodate him...and now, he wants someone to do him a favor.

I wish him good luck. He's had his day, and had it his way...and didn't give much back other than what his stats say.

A.I. is still an All Time Great! We should be seeing him in the nba this season... if they have a season.

AI may be speaking the truth, the problem is nobody is listening......why, because we have heard it all before.  Actions speak louder than words; if the NBA resolves the lockout, AI should go in as a walk-on and see if he can earn a 10 day contract.  If he succesfully delivers then issue another, until he proves that the words coming out of his mouth match his actions.

You cannot be the poster child for poor attitude and team mate, blow your money and simply say "I've changed" so you can get bailed out of debt by some organization.

I'm afraid the closest thing that Iverson can expect to a job in the NBA is to hired by the league as a counselor for the diversion program.

He his a living, breathing example for all young players in the NBA of how easily you can fall from grace, no matter how talented you are, based on poor choices when your ego allows you to ignore the consequences of life.

It is a sad tale but no one should feel sorry for Iverson. He self-destructed.

You should change the headline to read AI wants a check from league. any way. The guy is broke and needs money. He will do exactly what he did in Memphis and Turkey. He will sign get the money then go back to being his old selfish self. Please stop telling him to hang out with TO. The baggage these two carry, they would never find a place big enough for the both of them. But they did get to see their names in the news so they got their ego stroked a little anyway.

To little to late, like most EGOs that are having a hard time letting go. AI was a decent player with a bad attitude and that attitude may have burned most of the bridges that may have been willing to give him another chance. Its a shame when a player with his achievements is begging to get back in and I can only pray it is not for the money after having a career good enough to make him a very RICH RICH man. It would almost be funny if Coach Brown showed up to watch him PRACTICE though.

I can't speak to AI's bank account and the article doesn't state his desire to play only because he thinks he still can help someone.  So, I wouldn't assume he's broke and needs the cash.

As far as AI being a "decent" player.....pffftt, he dominated the league for quite a few years and he wasn't 6' 4" 225.  He was a normal adult male's size.  To do that is amazing.

But his age and talent are at a point where he needs to retire.  Hopefully, he has money saved.

Someone who knows nothing commented on Rodman.. Your a idiot putting Rodman into Iverson or Owens statement. Difference is HUGE.. Owens and Iverson ball hogs..!!!!!!! Loved the spotlight off the court.. Rodman was a team player all the way through maybe too much to where he would never shoot ! He loved getting the board passingthe ball and he unlike Iverson and Owens has many rings too prove being a team player with more than one team ! He loved spotlight off the court and he loved playing basketball ! He was like very player who is at the end of the road he just kept tryin to stay in the game. But again stupid , completely stupid comment about Rodman from the man below.
