The Big Threatener.

In a new autobiography, NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal admits that he told former Los Angeles Lakers teammate Kobe Bryant that he would kill him.

O'Neal and Bryant teamed up for three titles with the Lakers but engaged in a public war of words that eventually led the Lakers to trade O'Neal to the Miami Heat. In his new book, Shaq Uncut: My Story, O'Neal says he took issue with Bryant giving public statements about how he was out of shape and faking an injury after Lakers brass requested the two stop squawking. O'Neal was so upset about the comments, he writes, that he threatened to murder Bryant during an argument about Bryant's sexual assault case in Colorado.

Here's an excerpt posted on
Kobe stands up and goes face-to-face with me and says, "You always said you're my big brother, you'd do anything for me, and then this Colorado thing happens and you never even called me." I did call him. ... So here we are now, and we find out he really was hurt that we didn't stand behind him. That was something new. I didn't think he gave a rat's ass about us either way. "Well, I thought you'd publicly support me, at least," Kobe said. "You're supposed to be my friend."

Brian Shaw chimed in with "Kobe, why would you think that? Shaq had all these parties and you never showed up for any of them. We invited you to dinner on the road and you didn't come. Shaq invited you to his wedding and you weren't there. Then you got married and didn't invite any of us. And now you are in the middle of this problem, this sensitive situation, and now you want all of us to step up for you. We don't even know you." ... Everyone was starting to calm down when I told Kobe, "If you ever say anything like what you said to Jim Gray ever again, I will kill you."

Kobe shrugged and said, "Whatever."
Wow. Well, it clearly got personal. There wasn't ever much doubt about that.

How seriously should we take O'Neal's threat here? O'Neal has tried to establish a law enforcement career but has also been involved in a number of suits that allege all sorts of crazy behavior, including kidnapping and hit men. I suppose if Bryant reacted dismissively, the danger can't have been that real. But the dysfunction was as authentic as it gets.

O'Neal announced his retirement from the NBA back in June and joined TNT as an NBA commentator in July.

Shaq: I told Kobe Bryant I would kill him

Shaq's word is far greater than Kobe's. Always has been and always will be.

Shaq: I told Kobe Bryant I would kill him

I've always said, Kobe's lucky he's not playing in the CPL (Colorado Penal League), because I'm quite sure that's where he deserves to be playing.

Shaq: I told Kobe Bryant I would kill him

This is as usual, a waste of time and money for anyone to buy this book. As people Kobe and Shaq have plenty of things to get right. They were most likely never true friends anyway and shoved together on a team ment only to win. And win they did. They went to 4 strait title appearances and won 3 of them. That alone was great, but this story about how they started and continue to hate each other is a waste of my words and anybody elses. Also if Shaq actually told Kobe that he was going to kill him he should have been brought up on criminal charges just like anyone of use that live in this country. But as it is who really gives a crap, its just another way that shaq is trying to get ahead of Kobe and never will.Shaq is so pathetic.

Shaq: I told Kobe Bryant I would kill him

Even though their beef was settled years ago, Shaq is smart to bring it back up now.  Great way to sell books!  He should give Kobe a percentage of the profits as a thank you.

As for what Shaq says happened, it probably did.  And just as was the case back in 2004 when the team imploded, it was both of their faults.  Kobe's freedom was on the line in Colorado, and was ever improving within a Laker team that afforded him little room to grow more as a player (with a 7 foot, 350 pound larger-than-life figure crowding the lane).  It doesn't make his behavior right, but it does explain a lot of it.

I vividly remember the interview Kobe did with Jim Gray.  Even though it should have been handled behind closed doors, most of what Bryant said about Shaq was absolutely true.  Was Shaq out of shape?  Definitely.  Did his conditioning suck?  He was missing games and getting wider every season.  Was his off the court behavior immature/petty?  You bet.  Did he damage the Lakers' chances at a title in 2003 by refusing to do injury rehab during the off season?  HELL yes.

Shaq: I told Kobe Bryant I would kill him

Man this board is funny,

First, I think the problems with these guys in LA are probably typical of these types of egos in this environment. Many sports related movies have documented this type of thing. The coaches have to just controll it.

Kobe and Shaq could win without the other but certainly could not win alone. After all the game requires 5 people on the floor.

Where did the Michael Jordan comments come from? This was a story about Shaq and his book.

Shaq: I told Kobe Bryant I would kill him

Must be a boring day in the NBA world. Seriously, Shaq is bringing this all up again. I thought he'd have more class. I guess not. I guess all we can wait for now is his book and when Shaq commentates on a Lakers game.

Can't believe this is even news worthy, LeBron must have done something by now to get the media's attention.

Shaq: I told Kobe Bryant I would kill him

Can you imagine being a coach in the NBA? Baby-sitting versized adolescents,  with jumbo-sized egos and pea-sized brains. If that sit out forever I wouldnt miss it.
