The news was implied, assumed and the announcement, given recent events, is a formality. Nevertheless, the NBA officially cut another portion off its 2011-2012 regular season schedule on Tuesday.

Yahoo Sports reports that the league "informed late this afternoon [Tuesday] games through December 15th have been cancelled, a front office executive says."

103 games will be lost during this span.

NBA commissioner David Stern had targeted Dec. 15 as the start date for a 72-game regular season in the league's most recent proposal to the National Basketball Players Association, delivered last Thursday. Stern has made regular reference to "the calendar" determining the cancellation schedule and has stated that the league needs one month from the date an agreeement is reached to have sufficient time to begin its season. The NBPA rejected the NBA's proposal and issued a disclaimer of interest, disbanding the union and threatening to take the labor impasse to court.

The New York Post reported last weekend that the NBA had modified the schedules on its website to remove all games from Dec. 1 through Dec. 14.

Tuesday's cancellation represents the third cancellation of games in two-week increments. The NBA has now canceled a total of 324 regular season games. On Oct. 28, Stern announced the cancellation of all games from Nov. 15 to Nov. 30. On Oct. 10, Stern cancelled the first two weeks of the NBA regular season, spanning from Nov. 1 to Nov. 15. On Oct. 4, Stern cancelled the NBA's preseason.

I think the NBA has made their point to the players.  They should just let the players cancel the games from now on.  After all as noted above  "the league needs one month from the date an agreeement is reached".  The MLB owners made a questionable decision by cancelling the 1994 World Series so they should have put the onus on the players to try to keep the championship scheduled.  (Will sportsline.com go back and write a story about the missed WS like they have been doing about the NBA games missed this season?)  sportsline.com did exist in 1994, but it was not owned by CBS at the time.  I remember their sports byline USA sports talk radio shows.  CBS did a great thing by killing off those hosts.  Those guys were as critical as Captain Kangaroo, e.g., when the Houston Oilers were going into the porcelain chamber pot finishing with a horrific 2-14 season following a 12-4 season in 1993, the late night guy (his last name rhymes with the first letter of his first name) actually said, "the Oilers are not a bad team.  They are a few tweaks away from being a playoff contender."  Besides as I finish this rant off topic, the whole network was a billboard for the SF49ers.  Shills.

NBA officially cancels games through Dec. 15

Well, well, well.  The NBA has 906 more games to cancel.  The NBA's regular season normally spans 170 calendar days each year.  At this rate, the entire season would be officially cancelled in mid-late January.

NBA players are the most well compensated employees on the face of the earth.  More, more, more is all that you ever hear from the players except when they are complaining that they are being treated like slaves.

I have no idea why anybody watches the NBA any longer.

They called the NFL lockout the millionaires versus the billionaires.  The NBA lockout is the multi-millionaires versus the billionaires.

I stopped watching a long time ago because the action is no longer there.  The players don't even play hard until they get to the playoffs.

The players call Michael Jordan a traitor.  Michael Jordan played harder than any player that I have seen since he was a rookie.  I believe that Michael Jordan is disgusted with all of those who have worshipped him over the years.

There is so much hypocrisy in this entire proceeding that just makes me want to say goodbye to the NBA forever.  I would much rather watch NCAA or high school basketball.  At least those players are motivated.

There is nothing wrong with the game.  There is only something wrong with the people who benefit the most financially from the game.

Do either of you fools remember the NHL strike? Everybody got what they wanted, a season when nobody played. They are still trying to recover from that. I like most people in this country, only pay attention to the NBA when it's playoff time. That and the fact that the only other game in town is baseball.
There is no reason to have an 82 game schedule. We all know with about 90% certainty who will be in the finals in any given year. So the interest is mostly on the Finals.
So take your time trying to come to an agreement. Most people could care less.
