No rings for Mavericks on Christmas

As much as everyone outside of the state of Florida may have wanted to enjoy watching the Heat as the Mavericks get their championship rings, it's not to be. Those interested in schadenfreude will have to settle for the Miami 3 watching the Mavericks' first championship banner be raised.

WFAA in Dallas reports that Mark Cuban has informed them the Christmas Day season opener against the Heat will not be ring ceremony night for the Mavericks. It's customary for the first home game of the season to be ring ceremony night, but Cuban says that due to so many people likely having made other plans for Christmas in light of the ongoing lockout, he didn't want to leave them out.

However, the banner will be raised to the rafters so fans can celebrate their championship team on their home floor for the first time. The Heat of course lost to the Mavericks in six games in last season's Finals.

The story should be about the Mavericks, but it will, as always, be about the Heat. How will they react watching the banner they were two wins away from obtaining be raised in front of them? Does it spell an omen or serve as motivation? Will it affect how they approach their first game of the season? A loss would leave the Heat 0-2 in season openers under the new Triad after last year's loss to the Celtics in Boston.

Either way, it's going to be a fairly brutal process for the Heat to sit and watch the title they nearly won be celebrated on their opponents' home floor. Great drama, just the thing to kick off the season with to start moving past the lockout.

Cuban  didn't want LeBron to cry again on Christmas day, he instead is showing his holiday spirit and not completely rubbing it in his face. What a nice guy :)

Yeah, we wouldn't want to bruise those fragile egos down there in "souff beach". Maybe the Heat could have been the ones to receive the rings if LBJ would have played in the finals like he did in that flag football game with KD. That's the hungriest he's been since he was in high school.

It is probably helpful to the Heat to see the Dallas fans get to have an arena celebration of their championship Mavs.  After all, they would have seen it if game 6 had been in Big D.  This might spur them on just a little and get the 2011-12 season in perspective. Go Mavs!  Thanks for the great memories.

The only reason it's about the Heat is because you wrote it about the Heat and not the Maverick's. Did you really have to put in how will they react to this or that, who cares, this is about the Dallas Mavericks night. It's about the Dallas Mavericks raising the banner and getting their rings.

My guess is Cuban didn't want to further rub it in Lebron and the Heat's face. I don't buy the story about Christmas day and plans. It's usually the biggest games of the NBA year are on that day.

They should be getting their rings Christmas night.&nb

I think the NBA doesn't want to humiliate Lebron even more.

Congrats to the Mavericks again, but I'm hoping for a better post season from the Lakers, sorry Mavs fans.

If this is good for the NBA, then tell me, how can it be good for very long?  You see, if this actually IS good for the NBA, it's because of it being like a soap opera, not because of the excitement of the game.  You can keep fans coming back for a long time, if there's excitement in your games, but you WILL eventually lose them if it's because of your never-ending soap opera.

You forgot the great Luc Longly on your list of bulls.  But seriously I agree it takes a team to win championships, not an individual

I almost got a perfect score on my ACT back in the day.  Well, by that I mean I took the test, so regardless of what I scored it was a lot closer than it would have been if I didn't take the test.  What garbage journalism.

Why would anyone care what might be going through the Heat players minds as they watch the Championship banner being raised.  If they are truly professionals they will have their minds on what is in front of them and not on what is behind them.

What I do find interesting is Matt Moore's assertion that the Maverick's championship is one the Heat almost won.......really?  How is losing 4-2 in a possible best of 7 an almost victory for the Heat?  Actually, how is losing any title in any number of games an almost win?  That might be the most ridiculous thing I have heard.

This is the Mavs moment along with their fans to enjoy......it is no accident that the first Mavs home game was scheduled against the Heat.  I do not buy into Cuban's statement that too many fans will miss out due to other plans......the game will be a sell out.
