No rings for Mavericks on Christmas

As much as everyone outside of the state of Florida may have wanted to enjoy watching the Heat as the Mavericks get their championship rings, it's not to be. Those interested in schadenfreude will have to settle for the Miami 3 watching the Mavericks' first championship banner be raised.

WFAA in Dallas reports that Mark Cuban has informed them the Christmas Day season opener against the Heat will not be ring ceremony night for the Mavericks. It's customary for the first home game of the season to be ring ceremony night, but Cuban says that due to so many people likely having made other plans for Christmas in light of the ongoing lockout, he didn't want to leave them out.

However, the banner will be raised to the rafters so fans can celebrate their championship team on their home floor for the first time. The Heat of course lost to the Mavericks in six games in last season's Finals.

The story should be about the Mavericks, but it will, as always, be about the Heat. How will they react watching the banner they were two wins away from obtaining be raised in front of them? Does it spell an omen or serve as motivation? Will it affect how they approach their first game of the season? A loss would leave the Heat 0-2 in season openers under the new Triad after last year's loss to the Celtics in Boston.

Either way, it's going to be a fairly brutal process for the Heat to sit and watch the title they nearly won be celebrated on their opponents' home floor. Great drama, just the thing to kick off the season with to start moving past the lockout.

No rings for Mavericks on Christmas

One other thing I should have added, though I probably don't have to tell you......the reason people treat the Heat differently is because of how they behaved in the summer of 2010. The way they handled themselves came off as arrogant and entitled and that rubs people the wrong way. If Lebron had handled his FA and "The Decision" differently and had they not had that silly rally where they announced 7 titles were on the way, the Heat wouldn't be hated the way they are. Sure, some Cavaliers fans still would have been upset, but I really don't think they would be hated in the way they are.

So, sure, the hate may be silly and it may sometimes be over-the-top, but the Heat brought it on themselves - not because three great players got together on the same team, but because they acted like children afterwards.

No rings for Mavericks on Christmas

I fully expected to read this article and find that Cuban decided to show some class in not rubbing their victory in, since they've lost so many times before.  Turns out he just wants to rub it in even more.  Why am I not surprised?  I can't blame him, but I too would love to watch Miami watch the ring presentation...

No rings for Mavericks on Christmas

whoosh, you're absolutely right. I can't stand the Heat, but the fact is, they got further and played 6 more games than every other team in the NBA but one. Winning a conference championship is an accomplishment - it may not be the NBA Championship, but it still isn't easy to get to that point. Personally, because I don't like them, I like to think of their season last year as a failure.....but, of course, that just means there were 28 bigger failures - including my team. :(

It's obviously cool that Cuban is thinking about fans, but I'm a little confused by this one. Doesn't the NBA get its best regular season ratings on Christmas Day? In other words, I would think doing it on Christmas Day on national television would be the way to include as many people as possible. No?

No rings for Mavericks on Christmas

All the hate aside as it is ignorant, good for Cuban to put the ring ceremony to another nite so that more fans can enjoy it.  As he stated, Christmas is a day many have likely made other plans.

As for Miami; the ring ceremony will not make it any more painful.  In fact, it likely will give them motivation hoping that next year; they can do this to someone else.

Miami is talented and in their first year they made it to the 6th game of the NBA Finals.  I'd consider that impressive.  Everyone realizes it is only a matter of time when you have that talent.  And even with the new luxury tax system; Miami will keep the big two in DWade and Lebron and in all reality; that is the cornerstone they need to be successful.

It took every other duo longer than the first year to be in NBA Finals.  Why do we have a different expectation for Miami?  It is all hating...and it is stupid.  There are plenty of other things to dislike...than worry about Miami.  As for me; I simply enjoy the game.

No rings for Mavericks on Christmas

I say line the Mavs up directly in front of the Heat bench and give them their rings SLOWLY with swirling spot lights, confetti, smoke machines and have the Mavs dance and nods their heads to the beat of the music...Rub their little jealous noses in it and make it burn. If the 3 divas aren't already motivated by zillions of dollars and the embassassment of losing the championship, then jab them with public humiliation. I would actually tune in if I knew it would happen that way...

No rings for Mavericks on Christmas

The Heat were a "force to be reckoned with" last year. How did that turn out?

Smart move to NOT have the ring ceremony while the Heat watch. The Heat will be a force to be reckoned with this year: don't do anything to motivate them further. I think Cuban is using the Christmas commitment thing as an excuse, but I think it is a smartt move: let sleeping dogs lie, don't shove a stick in the cage of the lion and all that.
