Knicks in the lead for Tyson Chandler

Ken Berger of CBSSports.com reports a stunner. Berger reports that the New York Knicks have emerged as the leader for Tyson Chandler, ahead of the Warriors, who reportedly offered Chandler a four-year, $60 million deal Thursday. Berger reports that the Golden State offer isn't as "robust" as the report from California indicated.

In order to make room for Chandler, Berger says the Knicks would use the amnesty clause on Chauncey Billups, or trade him, then move Ronny Turiaff.

In the wake of Berger's report, ESPN.com reports that there is a "98 percent" chance Chandler winds up with the Knicks and that the Warriors will turn their attention to Los Angeles Lakers restricted free agent DeAndre Jordan. Yahoo Sports reports the Knicks are close to a 4-year deal with Chandler worth $58 million.

How this move would affect the Knicks' pursuit of Chris Paul is not known at this time. It would give the Knicks their best interior defender and a game-changer at the rim. The Knicks would be in a dire position for point guard to run D'Antoni's offense. Along with Amar'e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony, the Knicks would feature an even better frontcourt, one of the best in the league. With the Knicks' biggest issue being defense, Chandler would revamp their team.

Should the Knicks not wind up with Paul (if, say, he goes to the Lakers as a Houston-New Orleans-Los Angeles deal is being volleyed), they'd still have an excellent core. Stoudemire's primary weaknesses are at-rim defense and rebounding, and yet he's been forced to play center for the past six seasons of his career. Chandler provides everything the Knicks need to quell questions about their defense and toughness. The point guard duties would then fall to Toney Douglas and Iman Shumpert, a rookie who has captured the hearts and minds of Knicks fans like... every player the Knicks have drafted for forty years.

Stoudemire is nearly untradeable should the Knicks still be pursuing Paul, as the insurability of his knees following surgery six years ago leaves questions about his long-term health. Ironically, Stoudemire would benefit most from the addition of Paul and Chandler, with Chandler covering his deficiencies down low and Paul working with Stoudemire in the pick and roll which made him an MVP candidate in Phoenix next to Nash. But the Knicks would almost certainly not trade Carmelo Anthony due to both his name brand value and the work that was put in to acquire him initially.

The Knicks' plan isn't clear at this point, it may never be clear. But even with limited cap space, they remain a major player in this short NBA "offseason," even before signings can happen.

The question is now whether this is the end game for the Knicks, or whether it is a secondary move in pursuit of Paul, should they manage to land Chandler.

Knicks in the lead for Tyson Chandler

You're aware that if they sign Chandler, then the only way they could go after Chris Paul is via trade, right? All the money they could have potentially used on Paul next year would now be going to Chandler this year.

I think it is great step forward, but way to expensive. I would have loved to see a better caliber PG + Grant HIll come in, thewn try to use all that CHandler money to bring back Gallinari and Chandler.

I'll cite here that Eddie Curry was the most dexterious center, greatest hands when we was trying. As a Knicks freak, as a true, since Pat Riley hater, it's gonna hurt of Curry comes back in shapre and is the answer to bring the Heat to a championship.

It this is accurate then the Knicks will not need a point guard who scores. they will need a pass first point guard who perhaps is an excellent defender or has great speed. There is a guy out here who they can get on the cheap. He's played in Europe the last few years  but he was one of the best guards there. Jeremy Pargo from Gonzaga. Team player , passes first and is very quick. Probably would sign for the minimum. I saw him play in the Euroleague Final four and he was impressive. (no, I am not associated with Gonzaga or Pargo in any way I just like his game.)

Big picture guys, the knicks will sign Chandler and deal Amare for Paul I am almost certain of that what we all fail to realize is Amare wasn't their top choice in free agency but he performed well for the team.I just think the Knicks are about to pull off a blockbuster.

What the Knicks gave up for Carmello is like an anchor around their necks. They gave up any semblence of depth that they ever had. They have no trade pieces. There is little on the roster to interest NO or any other teams for that matter.

Chandler? Not a bad move. He could be a trade chip but I don't think Chandler will sign unless he is sure they are planning to have him moving forward. Chandler will not sign to end up in No I wouldn't think. Does this mean they are giving up on Howard? Probably.

Chandler would make for a powerful frontcourt BUT remember Chandler was oft injured before last year, Amar's knees are always a huge question mark. Without Billups there is no answer at PG.

It sounds like the Knicks as usual are roaming around the desert looking for water and jumping from one mirage to another. It is highly unlikely that things are going to fall into place for this franchise. Howard will land somewhere and Paul will likely be not far behind him.

I guess making the playoffs is considered losing? The problem with this site is that its frequented by adults. Not elemntary school students that will take uniformed blanket statements with no supporting evidence as gospel. Step up your game if you're gonna make controversial comments. Offer some facts to support your observations. Be a big boy :) Cuz you sound like a child who knows nothing about basketball.

I like this move for the Knicks even though it probably ends their chances of ever getting Chris Paul (unless they choose to trade Chandler for him immediately, which I highly doubt is the case). I bet they work out a sign and trade with Dallas rather than using the amnesty clause on Billups (he only has one year left anyway). If that is the case it would be nice to see them also get JJ Barea in the deal and fill their void at PG. I also heard that the Knicks are also leaders in signing Grant Hill. Would be a nice lineup Barea, Hill, Melo, Amare, Chandler with Landry Fields and Toney Douglas coming off the bench. Hill and Chandler would be nice defensive pieces to add to the Knicks. I CANNOT WAIT to see what the Knicks roster looks like on Christmas Day!

If by some chance (though its dream and probably can't happen) the Knicks can still get Paul while also adding Chandler, I think they instantly become the best team in the league and one that will be a force for many years to come. Stay Tuned.......the Knicks always have a way of working things out

Knicks lead every thing

The knicks will also lead in losses. What a puke excuse for a franchise. The media talks like every free agent in the world will play for them. I find it amazing that they hold the largest market and cannot build even a decent team. They will continue to lose. But at least they will get to see Carmelo drop fifty from time to time.

I would have to agree that this would be huge for the knicks to land Tyson Chandler to roam the paint for them but i do wonder what they are gonna do at the PG position?I love this move if it happens though i just hope they have something else in mind.I also know that have their sights set on Grant Hill and Josh Howard lets hope they fill this team out.
