On the same day that reports indicated that the New Orleans Hornets had engineered a 3-team trade that would have sent All-Star point guard Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Lakers, the trade, which also was to include the Houston Rockets, will not take place as expected.

Yahoo Sports reports that the NBA, which owns the Hornets and has veto power over all personnel moves, stepped in after prompting from unnamed NBA owners at Thursday's Board of Governors meeting.
The NBA has killed the proposed deal to send Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Lakers, league sources tell Yahoo! Sports. The NBA has caved to pressure from owners that the appearance of this deal, on heels of lockout, had to be stopped, sources tell Y! Sports. "The deal is off," a source involved in the talks tells Y! Sports. "It's dead."
Ken Berger of CBSSports.com confirmed that the blockbuster deal is now "dead" and that the NBA "pulled the plug" on the trade.

As word of the deal's rejection spread, Paul posted a one-word message on Twitter: "Wow."

ESPN.com reported that Paul was "fuming" about the blocked deal and "exploring [his] legal options" to protest the NBA's decision with the help of National Basketball Players Association executive director Billy Hunter.

NBA.com reported later Thursday that NBA spokesman Tim Frank issued the following statement: "Not true that owners killed the deal...League office declined to make the trade for basketball reasons."

Good for the NBA! its about time they put a stop to this super team bullshit. It was starting to get old letting the players decide what team they want to play for Carmelo, Lebron. The league needs to get back to the days of Bird, Magic, Dr J, You get drafted, paid a ton of money and play the damn game. Not complain and tweet what you want and where you wanna go.

The NBA is terrible and a shell of its former self...More than half the teams with sub .500 records each year.....Garbage.
I'm not a math major but if 1/2 the teams have winning records the other half have to have losing ones, unless you want a bunch of 0.500 teams.

So why didn't the chumps "kill" the Bosh/James deal?

Way to cave in, milktoaste.  This deal shouldn't have gotten this far.

I agree.  I understood the trade from a Lakers standpoint.  I understood the trade from a NO standpoint.  I didn't understand it at all from a Houston standpoint.  Scola is better than Gasol and Odom had his firts productive year in awhile last year.  Both of those players are soft as hell.

The NBA HAD to nix the deal. It would have killed the New Orleans franchise, both competitively and financially.

I hate the Lakers as much as anyone else, but I have a real problem with this. It looks like a reasonably fair trade, no shenanigans, AND it's in probably in the long-term best interest of all three teams (given that CP3 is leaving at the end of the season and should probably be traded now)! But the league vetoes anyway? That's pretty BS.

First the Lakers (and every other major market team) get completely hosed in the new CBA...now the Lakers get hosed AGAIN in their attempt to restock the team for the future through the ONLY PATH the league has allowed them (TRADES)...since the league now severely punished any other route for the Lakers in aquiring talent (doubling the luxury tax, stripping the MLE by almost half, etc). The NBA clearly...CLEARLY want the Heat to win the NBA Championship this year...what an absolute con job!

What BS, the NBA sucks, owners stepped in and pressured the NBA to pull the plug.  This is not right and it is BS.
