Tyson Chandler says he will sign with Knicks

The Knicks have their man, and it's not CP3. Even after talks broke down in a deal that would send Chris Paul to the Lakers, leaving open the possibility of the point guard joining the team he toasted in 2010, the Knicks have agreed to a deal with center Tyson Chandler. Ken Berger of CBSSports.com reported Thursday that the Knicks had moved to the front of the line for the 29-year-old veteran who was a key component in the Dallas Mavericks' championship run.

Chandler joined a Dallas radio station Friday to announce he would sign with New York and thank fans and the Mavericks organization. Dallas is clearly pushing to clear cap space in advance of 2012's free agency class, which seems to be narrowing every second, with both Chris Paul and Dwight Howard heavily involved in trade rumors that would put them on teams they would then re-sign with in July.

The New York Times reports his asking price was a four-year, $58 million deal, which puts him at an average of $14.5 million per year. Compared to the ridiculous amount the New Jersey Nets are reportedly offering Nene, that makes Chandler a steal. It's a big win for the Knicks, who need a better interior defender and legitimate center. There are injury concerns with Chandler along with his age, but in a league that's short on big men, and for a team so despereately in need of defense and rebounding, this was a spectacular fit.

Chandler, Amar'e Stoudemire, and Carmelo Anthony now make up arguably the best three-man frontcourt in the league. With Melo's perimeter range, Stoudemire's post and elbow offense, and Chandler's ability to clean up the offensive glass, the Knicks will be in a prime position to contend for the Eastern Conference Finals at the very least. To get this deal done, however, Chauncey Billups will be amnestied, something Billups is dead set against, and the Knicks will have to find some way to bring in a competent starting point guard. Toney Douglas hasn shown flashes but not enough overall, and rookie Iman Shumpert is an unknown at this point, playing under Mike D'Antoni who's not the rookie-friendliest coach in the league.

But Chandler does address immediate concerns, and helps out Stoudemire immensely. Stoudemire is a poor help defender, and Chander is excellent at that. Stoudemire lacks the length and size to play center, Chandler is a pure five. Stoudemire struggles with double-teams in traffic, Chandler can finish off dum-offs. And Stoudemire is an attrocious rebounder and Chandler is of high caliber.

The Knicks have a big man, a true 5. They may not get Chris Paul, but they're going to be a better team in 2011-2012.

Poor Dallas -because they won it all their free agents become much more valuable . Two are gone but Kidd is loyal and they will keep Dirk.

Noles you've been trolling this story since it broke so I have no intent to argue with you, but I read that you think this is another garbage contract. I disagree. Chandler was exactly what the knicks needed. This is the NBA, you sign the guy you need when you need him. Who else were the Knicks going to give money too? The guy was a huge reason the Mavs won the title. The knicks needed a true 5. I guess we can revisit this arguement at the end of the season.

Oh, the MMA is fixed? A bit of a conspiracy theorist, eh? Did you know that the moon is also made of cheese?
Boyce , commenting on an article, then having my name and post mentioned is people drawing me into a debate on the article. This is a message board. I stand by what I said. Chandler is going to be paid then same as Dwayne Wade, Lebron James & many others. You seem to think the Knicks are going to win a championship because of a guy who will get you 10 boards a game, good luck with that pipe dream.

Like I said Noles is canadian.  No one cares what he says anyways.
lol @ that he says he doesn't care twice,, and even spelled canadian differently after I corrected him.

What does MMA have to do with the Knicks, Chandler or the NBA... little bit off topic or what pal? Just for the record, MMA is fake and fixed, no different than watching WWE. I think your the one who knows little to nothing about the NBA, stick to the NFL.

Anthony, Stat, Chandler. That is a huge front court. Put Iman at point, he's very athletic. All he needs to do is give it to Melo at the wing

i'm not a Chandler fan, but i've always respected his willingness to not GO AGGRESSIVELY FOR THE GARBAGE REBOUNDS COMPETIING AGAINST HIS OWN TEAMMATES!!   but he just let's him have it since he is a team guy, not a stat guy...   i think Noles should watch less NBA and more MMA (dude, alot of unjustified GSP haters right now so defend...   but just for record, i think GSP is the greatest Martial Artist of all time)

being a hip NY-ker (who's been a Nets fan since Kerry Kittles day) i obviously love Canadians...   but Noles, you are so far off and the fact that you named RANDOLPH AND HUMPHRIES THAT EPITOMITES garbarge rebounds tells me that you don't actually watch the games (or at least OBSERVE INTELLIGENTLY)...
Randolph is an all star, and the Memphis Grizzlies have had more success than the New York Knicks as of late.I follow basketball very closely, Chandler was the guy no on wanted, until he went to Dallas and didn't really have to do anything because of there depth, wait til he gets to New York where they have no depth what so ever. Rebounds are rebounds, and the fact of the matter is Carmelo takes a lot of shots, misses a lot of shots...and Chandler is going to have to do better than the under 3 offensive boards he averaged last year. 15 Million for under 10 boards per game isn't money spent well. But hey, it's the Knicks.... the number 1 team for garbage contracts!!!!! (Eddy Curry, Jared Jeffries,Jerome James,Allan Houston etc...)

oh, and the reason why Zach Randolph gets so many boards is because when he's guarding an opponent, he doesn't care about defense..   when the guy shoots, instead of trying to defend or at least put his hands over the shooters eyes to block his vision...   he just TURNS HIS BACK AND ATTEMPTS FOR A REBOUND WITHOUT EVEN ATTEMPTING TO BLOCK!!!   anyone with IQ over 60 can see that and if not...  well, HELLO FORREST!!
He must be doing something right to be an All Star, and lead his team to the playoffs. They beat the Spurs, and took the Thunder to 7, what have the Knicks accomplished?

anyway i think this is a very good move by the knicks and now they have a true center to go along with amare and melo. all they need is a point guard who can run the show, i just hope douglas or shumpret can be that point guard.
They have a good veteran PG in Billups who can run the show, and is a proven winner.... but , no the Knicks screw it up once again and will waive the guy, and sign Chandler to a huge contract.....

Well said. I don't think people understand that the biggest part of this deal is how much this is going to help out Amare this year. There are no more Ewings, Robinsons, Duncans, Shaqs, etc. in this league. The Knicks didn't need to go get Howard. So why not get a defensive big man. Im not even sure I want them to get Chris Paul, although it would not upset me. I would rather just spend that money on adding some cheaper depth to the team and let Carmelo and Amare do the scoring.
