Less than 24 hours after NBA commissioner David Stern stepped in to veto a 3-team trade that would have sent New Orleans Hornets All-Star point guard to the Los Angeles Lakers, the three sides have reportedly resumed talking.

Yahoo Sports reports, with confirmation from Ken Berger of CBSSports.com, that the Hornets, Lakers and Houston Rockets are re-engaged in trade talks in an attempt to "find a new way" to consummate a trade that would have sent Lakers All-Star big man Pau Gasol to the Rockets and Lakers forward Lamar Odom to the Hornets, along with Luis Scola, Kevin Martin, Goran Dragic and other considerations.

The three sides had reportedly agreed to a framework earlier on Thursday before word broke that Stern killed the deal in his role as overseer of the league-owned Hornets. The NBA initially said the trade had been vetoed for "basketball reasons" and issued a full statement on Friday morning.

"We decided, free from the influence of other NBA owners, that the team was better served with Chris in a Hornets uniform than by the outcome of the terms of that trade," Stern's statement read.

Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert sent a letter to Stern that called the proposed trade a "travesty" while players criticized Stern for stepping in to block the trade.

According to the New York Times
, the league would like the Hornets to get a "better, younger package," to ensure long-term success.

Paul reportedly threatened not to attend the opening of Hornets training camp on Friday, but eventually showed up. ESPN.com reports that Odom showed up late to Lakers camp, met with Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak and then left without participating.

The three sides need to ask David Stern to join the trade talks.  What is the sense of agreeing to a trade if the Commissioner is going to reject it.

Would it not be funny if they let a Howard for Bynum trade go through after turning down the Paul trade? The most dominant center in the NBA for Bynum with a suspention and bad knees.

This block helps the Lakers for their first five games.  The Lakers would have been bereft of big men, with Bynum serving his suspension for the unfortunate JJ Barea incident and Odom and Gasol gone.  The NBA would have enjoyed the Lakers starting the season 0-5.  Does anyone know if Artest also has suspension time pending?  It's hard to say if the Magic would have traded for Bynum, because of Bynum's pending suspension.  Now Lamar Odom is going to be in a funk and who knows if Mike Brown can talk Lamar off the ledge.  Pau's a professional, but he has to be stinging from this.  When the ball goes up and Kobe misses his opening 27 foot three point shot with four Bulls on him and 23 secs remaining on the shot clock, Pau and Lamar will snap out of it.  Also, Phil Jackson isn't there to call Pau a [cat].

Agreed with everything you said. Sean Gilbert is afraid that he wasn't going to get his money from the Lakers with this deal, that was what his crying was about. What he failed to realize was Chris Paul was going to get the big fat contract and the Lakers would of had to pay the luxury tax he wanted. This is the difference between savy owners and one who has no clue how to run his basketball program. He needs to get over Lebron punking him to go to Miami.

How could the NBA or Stearn have thought trying to vote on trades being fair and blocking Franchises from running their businesses the way the best see fit was a good idea? Lol Everyone i talked to about this agreed it would be reversed in less then a week once they realized what can of worms this would have opened between teams, players and fans everywhere. Baseball has been all about the teams market size for years, you don't turn to dictatorship the smaller market teams just have to figure out different ways to sometimes compete. At least half the league makes the postseason in the NBA giving all the decent teams a shot at the championship. As far as Odom not wanting to be traded, give me a break if your not the best option for your profesional sports team then they get rid of you. What a joke, it sounds like a fantasy football league voting over trades and dudes whining about not getting a spot in the league over someone else..... Could you imagine the yankees trade getting shot down by other owners? This is America

Lamar Odom has been one of the most sensitive B*A players I have ever seen throughout his career. When things are going his way it is all right in the world.  The minute someone doesn't crown him among the untouchable superstars in the league he mopes, cries, b, and complains.

This date back to his early days with the Clippers and I think even when he was coming out of high school.  He was one of the originals who wanted to forgo college and head straight to the pros.  Now he is throwing a fit because he might have to leave his cherished Kardashian.  His perfect L.A. life might be in disarray for a whole 66 games, really?  He shows up to camp but doesn't participate?  That is some childish arse B.S. right there.

Guys are traded throughout the league every year.  What makes him think he is so special that he never considered the possibility?  I hate guys like that that think everybody is supposed to bow down at the knees in their presence. He HAS to realize he is on the downward side of his career.  If he doesn't, then he is about the only one.  He doesn't know that that is the price of doing business in the NBA after all these years?  WTH?

I know he likes to think he is Kobe and therefore elite, but there is only one Kobe and his GM pretty much made that known to everybody on his team.  Do you hear anybody else griping publicly?  You think Pau Gasol wants to leave a championship condition, or maybe Andrew Bynum?   Derek Fisher has been traded and traded back, and barely did you hear a peep out of him. The fact that he gets along so well with that family is understandable.  He is a wanna-be prima donna.  What was his stat line last year?

The new talks will not likely be approved either.  What the league is really afraid of is that the Lakers will not only secure Paul but clear enough $$$ space to also be in the running for Howard.  Moreover, the POOR teams (ha ha) will lose money if the Lakers are not paying luxery tax and the new revenue sharing amounts due to the trades.  The deal was great for NO who had only a few players under contract and would have a competitive team, as would Houston and the Lakers as a result of the deal.  This is a travesty.  Paul and the others involved in the trade should sue the NBA for mulitple millions because they were harmed for sure.

As a big NBA fan and not a conspiracy guy, this is not going to help the image of the NBA.  While always a huge fan of Stern, he has obviously lost control of the league and should be replaced immediately by someone who the owners and players respect.  Do it now.
