The Boston Celtics and the New Orleans Hornets are reportedly working on a trade, only it's not the one you think.

The Celtics and Hornets had recently been rumored to be engaged in a point guard swap of Rajon Rondo and Chris Paul but multiple sites reported on Friday night that the two teams were instead closing in on a sign-and-trade that would send All-Star forward David West to Boston. reported that the Celtics were "close to [a] deal to land West, who is a free agent. Yahoo Sports reported that the deal would include a 3-year extension worth between $27 and $29 million and would also see the Celtics send back center Jermaine O'Neal and "another player," who would then be re-routed by the Hornets.

Earlier Friday, the Celtics dealt big man Glenn Davis to the Orlando Magic for forward Brandon Bass.

West, 31, averaged 18.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game last season for the Hornets, the only NBA team he has played for during his 8-year NBA career. The 2-time All-Star tore his ACL back in March but decided to opt out anyway. He was declared healthy in October.

David West, really ? Good luck Boston. This guy shys away from contact and really loves to shoot jumpers. He does not attack the basket. He is soft and old. Now he is coming off of an acl tear. He is a worse version of the Sacramento Chris Webber. Danny Ainge is desparate and is making a mistake here. This guy is useless w/o Chris Paul and he will not help the Celts get back to the East Title. He is not going to make the difference in a series against the Heat, so there is no need to get him. How in the world is he being offered close to 30 mil........... Why not sign Rashard Lewis instead. He is just as worthless, but at least he can shoot the 3. The stupid owners and GM's don't deserve any sympathy - they will continue to overpay for overrated talent. David West is not a great defender either. Enjoy Beantown !

Well, we will sign if it does matter even though West opted out. Read my comments to Tyson Chandler to the Knicks and it is fairly similar to what else needs to be said. Stop listening to bitter owners like Dan Gilbert who is a cry baby and make the league look like the front office only cares about what it wants rather than what the owners and teams would like to do to improve their standing. Nice job, David Stern on the last 6 months. You look really bad, plain and simple.

He was a free agent - that makes it a totally different scenario..

David West is expected to opt out of the final season of his contract this week and become a free agent, according to sources close to the situation.

West has a June 30 deadline in his contract to notify the Hornets whether he will invoke next season's $7.5 million salary or opt for free agency, but sources say that the Hornets are already bracing for West to make his opt-out decision official before Thursday's buzzer.

The Hornets have anticipated all along that West would become a free agent, even though the former All-Star was forced to undergo surgery in April to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee suffered March 24. The reason: West still figures to be one of the two or three most coveted players on the open marke

All star from New Orleans up for a trade to an east coast perennial playoff team. Better hear the outrage Dan Gilbert and all you other small market owners.

The Celtics better be getting Dwight Howard cuz they're gonna have no centers left. No O'Neal, Shaq, or Big Baby. Who's gonna play for them?
