Update: The Knicks have officially announced the signing. Also, the New York Times reports that Davis signed for the veteran minimum under the veteran exception, which means the Knicks still have the room exception granted under the new CBA and are expected to continue their pursuit of James Posey, recently amnestied by the Pacers

After using the amnesty clause on Chauncey Billups, the Knicks have been hunting a new starting point guard. Mike Bibby recently signed, but that's not exactly the answer.

Baron Davis was amnestied by the Cavs and cleared waivers, opening up the opportunity for him to sign anywhere. And that anywhere has turned out to be the Knicks, according to ESPN.com and confirmed by Ken Berger of CBSSports.com

With the Knicks being well over the cap, the deal had to be for the veteran minimum or the "mini mid-level" the Knicks have. According to SI.com, it is indeed for the $2.5 mini mid-level.

Which is why this makes a lot of sense for New York. It's a low risk, potentially high value signing. Davis still has a lot of game left, it just comes down to motivation and health. And with him being in New York playing on a solid Knicks team, you have to think he's going to be ready.

He's dealing with a back injury though, and could be out up to 8-10 weeks. However, after being amnetied by the Cavs, that timetable miraculously dropped to 4-6.

Other teams reportedly going after Davis were the Heat and Lakers, so the Knicks landing their target to likely start once he's healthy is a big move. Not to say Davis is going to be a star or anything, but considering the options right now for New York, Davis is about as good as they could do in their situation. Bibby is a nice veteran backup, Toney Douglas isn't a point guard and Iman Shumpert is mostly an unknown. Davis could at least step in and handle the offense.

Which shouldn't be all that difficult considering Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire are part of it. Where the Knicks will likely continue to struggle is the defensive end. Davis isn't known as much of a defender, so the addition of Tyson Chandler could be very important to seal off all those drives given up by Davis and Carmelo.

Shut up Pepper...this had nothing to do with Dan Gilbert you idiot....The relationship with the Cavs was never in question and this was done for the benefit of both parties.

Whether he was "hurt" or not, Gilbert can only blame himself.  Like you said, he could have let Davis rot at the end of the bench.  There was no reason to believe he would or wouldn't give effort when it came time to play.  Though, I blame no player for not wanting to play for Dan Gilbert.  Going to be a long, cold bunch of winters ahead in Cleveland.

If the Knicks can get it together this year they sure look REAL GOOD on paper! But they must get the feel for each other and glue as a unit. I think they will contend in the East. I say they make it to the 2nd RD of the Playoffs easy!nI like this team this year they will score a TON!!!

"It is probably no big deal, since the Knicks are not expected to do much this year anyway."

The guy will be on the floor in 4 weeks, and if anyone knocks the signing they are ridiculous. This guy can still play, and playing on a good team in a packed MSG should keep his interest from "waning". That's what happens when your on a 20 win clipper team. Last year this guys first night as a cav he came into the garden and almost single handedly beat the Knicks. I think he will have no problem staying interested.

I think they have nothing to lose on this deal and if he can come back healthy he may be a big help down the stretch. I like what I am seeing from Shumpert and I think Tony Douglas will play well this season if he stays healthy. He showed flashes of brilliance last season. The one thing the Knicks need is a pure shooter which they dont have and I dont think Bibby will be able to get enough minutes to provide that threat for them. I hope Fields can rebound from  horrific second half of last season and provide the 3 pt shooting the Knicks will need to open up the inside. All in all as  Knick fan you have to very happy with the offseason moves and I think they will be top 3 team in the east. The only last concearn is the coach and his ability to get his team to play defense. Shumpert will be a key to the team defense with his size and athleticism, if he can get major minutes, he will greatly improve there exterior D.

It really amazes me how idiotic non knick fans can make themselves sound sometimes. I get it you hate new york, were all the devil, blah blah blah. But to say the Knicks will be a non factor this season is just dumb. I would never say the Heat, Celtics, or Lakers will suck just because i don't like the teams. They have two superstars, an excellent and true center which is very rare in todays NBA, and have hired Mike Woodson a defensive specialist to work strictly on improving the defense. Signing Davis is a low risk-potetially high reward move. It's a cheap one year deal and if Davis averages 13 and 7 i will be more then happy. Say what you want but teams will have to respect Davis in their gameplan unlike Douglas and Bibby. I like the move personally.
