The failed Chris Paul trade, the departure of a trusted teammate and the dissolution of a decade-long marriage.

If that wasn't enough, the hits keep coming for Los Angeles Lakers All-Star guard Kobe Bryant

The Orange County Register reports that Bryant sat out Lakers practice on Thursday due to a torn ligament in his right wrist. The paper reports that Bryant said he "should be fine to play" when the Lakers open their regular season by hosting the Chicago Bulls in Staples Center on Sunday.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Bryant called his wrist injury "swollen and painful" but later added that, "It's always been in my nature to try to figure out a way to play."

The injury kept Bryant from action during Wednesday night's exhibition 108-103 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. Bryant sat on the team's bench wearing a large guard on his wrist.

The Lakers first announced the injury in a prepared statement on Wednesday.
Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, who suffered a right wrist injury in Monday night’s game against the Clippers, was examined today by Dr. Steven Shin of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic and underwent an MRI exam.  Results show that Bryant has a torn lunotriquetral ligament. Bryant will not play in tonight’s game against the Clippers and his status is day-to-day.
Bryant played 30 minutes in Monday's 114-95 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, tallying 22 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and committing 7 turnovers.

Bryant, 33, did not miss a game during the 2010-2011 NBA season. He's missed just 16 combined games over the last six seasons.

Kobe Bryant: I'll play Christmas despite wrist

Forgive me if I don't sit around talking about how "tough" Kobe is.  If you ask me; he is simply getting tons of press for a basic injury that probably tons of players play with.   I mean he is the same guy that has played with ligament issues in his finger for years...and apparently never needed surgery.  So spare me the bull.  Fact is:  Kobe will use this injury as an excuse to why his shooting percentage stinks.  Aside from that, it is all publicity.  So now instead of the Kardasians with Odom...it will be Kobe and his wrist.

Kobe..the same tough guy who would throw cheap elbows in his defender.  Same Kobe that gave up cause the guys told him he took too many shots...gave up in Game 7 of playoffs vs Suns....  Same guy who ratted out Shaq while facing rape charges...or who would even attempt to rape a young girl.  Same guy who threw his team and owners under the bus when he ain't winning.  Kobe is going to wake up sometime next year and wish he actually did go to the Clippers a long time back.  And I'm gonna enjoy the demise of the "Great Kobe".  Bring it on.....

Lakers are going down and Kobe will be going down with him.

Let's see the leadership when they start off awful.  I suspect Mike Brown will be fired while Kobe throws him and the rest of his team under the bus.  They sign Howard before the trade deadline for "too much" cause they are desperate cause they stink......then, they wil fail to advance 1st round in playoffs anyway.  When Howard goes to the West and plays with the big boys; he will be seen for what he truly is:  "over-rated".

All the while, Clips will be on the rise....and will be the team in LA for the next five years.

Kobe Bryant: I'll play Christmas despite wrist

If this were ANY OTHER player, this would be a 3-5 week stint on the I-L.

Kobe Bryant: I'll play Christmas despite wrist

Poor Kobe!!! Tough. Lots of other players are playing with injuries and you don't hear them crying about it.  This injury isn't even all that bad. It sounds a lot worse than it actually is. Kobe is just trying to get some press since the Clips have stolen most of their thunder so far. Go Clip Show.

What a moronic post. Kobe hasn't said word one about the injury-the media does their job and reports that he had an MRI, then the MRI reveals the results. Simple as that. It's a torn ligament-regardless of which ligament he's going be limited because it's on his shooting hand. Quit being an ignorant homer-you're only making yourself look bad.

Kobe doesn't need to try and get press-they follow his every move. No matter what he does we're going to hear about it, like it or not. He's hard to love sometimes-even as a fan I'll acknolwedge that. But if you're a fan of an NBA team you'd have him on your teamin a second because he's a winner who plays through pain. Show some fking respect.

First rate post Lee. Objective and classy-something most people that are not fans of a player fail to achieve. Great job man.

Kobe Bryant: I'll play Christmas despite wrist

Are you clowns actually insinuating that torn ligaments in the wrist of your SHOOTING HAND is not a serious injury for a BASKETBALL player? I don't even need to see the rest of any post when that is stated, its already obvious that someone is a troll. If any of us had torn ligaments in our wrist, we wouldn't be able to eat, brush our teeth, change the channel on the TV, much less GO OUT AND PLAY A PROFESSIONAL SPORT. Give it a rest.

As for Kobe putting his injury in the media, KOBE IS IN THE MEDIA NO MATTER WHAT HE DOES. Bad shooting night? Article all about Kobe. Good shooting night? Article all about Kobe. A lot of turnovers? Article all about Kobe. Divorce? Multiple articles all about Kobe. Coaching change? What does Kobe think? Odom traded? What does Kobe think? Are you seeing a pattern here? People want to hear about Kobe, especially trolls that want to hate on him, so the media takes full advantage of that. The team has to put out an injury report, and if Kobe is on it, you better believe the media is going to eat it up.

Kobe Bryant: I'll play Christmas despite wrist

I cant believe Crunch--time is talking smack about Kobe's injury. Big Ben is always injured, and the Steelers fans are always talking about how tuff he is.  Big Ben is a tough guy, much tougher than most.  He doesnt leak his injuries and neither does Kobe.  They are by far the tougher guys in their sports, so shut your hater mouth and enjoy watching Charlie Batch this weekend.

I don't care for Big Ben but he's truly tough guy and everybody knows it! Kobe will ride out a minor injury for the entire season as an excuse to cover up his horrific shooting performances that seem to happen quite often. Do you honestly believe Kobe is the only guy in the NBA playing with injury? Of course not but the difference is Kobe will let the media know so the whole world gives him a free pass. Kobe will make a bruise seem like a broken bone in order to cover up his 6-24 shooting performances...you know...like the one he had in game 7 of the Finals....and 3 horrific shooting games in that series....all while leading the way with turnovers....but it wasn't him, it was his injury. What's hilarious is one night he's on fire and the next night he's horrific. I guess the injury acts up every other night haha. ps. I remember when he claimed to have a neck injury but not even his media took to that one so it quickly healed and we never heard about it again. How ironic? haha

Kobe Bryant: I'll play Christmas despite wrist

It appears this is the year the Celtics and LAkers fall to second tier
teams. Many of those back to back to back games will have the aged Celtshuffing and puffing. That jump shot will start to fall short. Yhat defense will lose its crispness. The lakers would struggle with the offensive system change. They will really miss Odom. Kobe with bad wrist and knee will try hard, but it's goy to affect him.

This injury is not normally considered serious as the ligamentt in question is a lateral ligament which stretches across perpendicular to the arm. It must be painful to have a heavy handshake but dribbling with lateral elastic support stretched over it might not be so tough. Here is what one medical site says:

This study lends additional insight into the treatment of isolated lunotriquetral injuries. This relatively benign injury can be associated with persistent symptoms, most likely attributed to a disruption of carpal kinematics
I don't consider myself medically qualified so read about it yourself and make your own opinion. I used a couple of sites and this is quoted.

Kobe does play with pain. I respect that. I also sense that the Lakers are using this to build his legend which may not be objectively perceived. In any case I hope he heals quickly. Although I am not a fan of either the team or the player I always hope every player is at his best for every game. Let the best team win.
