Miami Heat All-Star guard Dwyane Wade hit a game-winner against the Bobcats on Wednesday night, and he wasted no time sending a message to Charlotte's most prominent professional athlete, Panthers rookie quarterback Cam Newton.

After banking in a leaner in the closing seconds to give Miami its 96-95 winning margin, Wade turned to Newton, who was seated courtside, and emulated the quarterback's patented "Superman" celebration. Wade and All-Star forward LeBron James both mimicked ripping open their suits to reveal the Superman outfit, just as Newton does when celebrating touchdowns, while staring right at the 2011 NFL Draft's No. 1 pick.

The Charlotte Observer reports that Wade says he was not mocking Newton but was instead simply tipping his cap to the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback out of Auburn.
"That was a show of respect to him," Wade said. "Not showing nobody up."

"First of all, the guy is huge," Wade said of Newton. "... I've seen him play a lot. He's entertaining. He had one of the best rookie years of any player to ever play the game."
This seems plausible. Wade and James are both noted NFL fans. Wade, a Chicago native, roots for the Bears; James cheers for the Dallas Cowboys. Star athletes across sports are part of an elite fraternity and this can certainly be read as an homage to Newton's greatness.

But the play, the celebration and, really, the start to Miami's season combine to send a greater message. Not just to Newton but to all basketball observers. These guys look eager to create their own lasting, memorable, trend-setting greatness this year.

Sorry, Clemson man, but next year someone else will have to show "just how terrible rookie QBs are." Your sour comparisons to Sam Bradford AND JaMarcus Russell are ridiculous. Cam got unlucky this year. Check out how close his losses were. The Panthers could easily have won several more games with fewer penalties or turnovers.

Cam Newton got really lucky this year. Wait until next year when he will show just how terrible rookie QBs are. Sam Bradford was a more accomplished player in college but he struggled mightily in his second year. Cam Newton will not do any better. There is a reason why NFL scouts are weary of drafting flash in the pan prospects. JaMarcus Russell had probably one of the greatest 18 months in college football, but it was all for nothing. He got pawned by his own arrogance, incompetence, laziness and stupidity. A hard worker he is not...

Wade: Superman act was 'respect' for Cam Newton

The Superman act was true Respect by Wade due to the Fact that he Iced the Game last nite with a Super Shot. Cam looks to be the Real Superman if he can continue to play like he has Year in and Year out. He needs a Saints/Pats Offense to truly show what he can do. Cam is Bad! He played like a Pro even without Training, completely unheard of for a Rookie QB....

Honestly I feel that it is a true story... and nothing to hide from... I mean maybe the hated 3 in Miami felt for Cam where maybe no one outside of NC or Warren Moon felt he was going to be any good... or worth the number 1 pick. All analysts said he will be picked number 1 but will be a bust won't make it in the NFL so on and so forth.... I for one am happy that he has had a good rookie year and hope he can improve on it because he was unjustly criticized to much... its fine if you criticize but like Tebow bashers haters are hating and not comparing the two... Cam is far better right now but Tebow has won, and has played well at times and especially come the 4th quarter or overtime... I def hope both players the best and make the haters choke on it...

Wade: Superman act was 'respect' for Cam Newton

Given Wade/Lebron's pattern last year in making fun of certain individuals I would say they were probably taking a shot at Cam Newton. It's not really a sign of disrepect. Certainly, fans who have no relationship to Wade outside of the court will see this as taunting but these kind of things happen between stars all the time. Reggie Miller & Spike Lee went at it for years but they enjoyed the trash talking and remain friends none the less. Fans sometimes will never get it, that these guys have a life off the court and these players will do their own kind of friendly trash talking to fellow celebs on the sideline.

But you can't change how fans look at things. Wade gave Carolina fans more reason to hate the Heat.
