There has never been any doubt that the 1992 Olympic team dubbed the Dream Team, is the greatest collection of basketball talent ever. They completely steamrolled everyone in their way and were even inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

And while there have been good American teams since, like 2008's Beijing roster or 1996's folllow-up team, there never has been a group quite like it. But LeBron James thinks the 20th anniversary team will compare. Via Fox Sports Florida:
"We can stack up with those guys," the Miami forward said.

"I agree," James said. "They set the standard for USA Basketball in '92 with all the great players they had. But we have some great ones as well. We have some Hall of Famers, some champions. So it's going to be a great (team)."

The only place you could ever find out is a video game, but here's an important note: The 2012 team has yet to win anything. And with the rest of the world pretty much caught up in talent with teams like Spain, France, Lithuania and others, awarding yourself a gold medal probably isn't the smartest thing. For the Americans to take home gold in London, they'll have to go through some good teams.

But for reference's sake, the Dream Team had Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Scottie Pippen, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, David Robinson, Clyde Drexler, Christian Laettner and Chris Mullin. The 2012 roster isn't set, but will likely have LeBron, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Blake Griffin, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Dwight Howard, Kevin Love, Chris Bosh and a few others.

Do they "stack up" as LeBron says? Absolutely. In terms of pure talent, the 2012 has an abundance of it. It's hard comparing the past to the present, because it's difficult to get past the greatness of players like Larry Bird and Magic Johnson and realize that guys like Durant and LeBron have comparable talents. Still, the '92 Dream Team dominated the world. The 2012 team has yet to play an exhibition. Reminds me of some other supposed "dream team"...

Don't go giving yourself not one, not two, not three, not four, not five gold medals before you've even practiced, LeBron. I figured you'd learned your lesson on that.

I'll make thisl short! This '12 team on PAPER looks good but against the '92 team  NO CONTEST!!!!!  The '12 team is all pretty with no toughness I don't see one player on the team ('12) that would or could take an elbow from Charles Barkley or drive the lane knowing what was in store for them. The first time they drove to the hole and felt the hammer that Ewing, Barkley, Malone, Pippen or Jordan would put on them and the '12 team would become a jump shooting  perimeter team! Christine Bosh? Didn't know the Olympic team had cheerleaders!! The epitome of soft!

The United States should easily take the gold at these Olympics, but come on LeBron. Nobody will ever come close to 1992. And nobody will be expected to. Just win the tournament, that is all we ask. GO USA!

How about this Bron Bron: Why don't you actually win something besides the Akron City BB Championship before you pop off? I'm surprised he didn't say they'd win "no1, not 2, not medals." But I guess he realized they'd win as many as there are players on the team. Really most of us don't care what you think. But assuming you were asked the question, perhaps you should try this for an answer (and to many other questions): "I/We haven't won it yet so until we do there is no comparison."

I think we know that most athletes today have better conditioning and better strength training than their predecessors. I think it's a little ignorant to think that given the same conditions today that MJ, Magic, Byrd, etc wouldn't be comparable if they played in the present. If you're main argument centers around that players today are more cut than Malone, Barkley, etc I'll concede to that.  That doesn't make them better at basketball.

You can really only judge any athlete by how they play against their competition. Everything else is just hypothetical. While it's true that Jordan and crew didn't have to compete against the athletic freaks like Howard, the players they did compete against got beat, and beaten badly.  That is what they were supposed to do.

That being said, it's just as silly to think that there will NEVER be a team as good as the Dream Team.  Today's team may end up being as good as the Dream Team, but they aren't until they prove it.

As far as Lebron's comments, if he would have left out the "we can stack up with thos guys" comment, he would have been fine.

This guy kills me. Doing the same with the olympic team as he did with the NOT world champion Heat. Lebron shut up, practice, and play the games. Stop with the predictions you can't back up. Go Bulls!

92 VS contest 92, with those guys this team wouldnt get a single whistle and most of them have made careers off of bad calls. The 92 team would win just off of fundamentals just like the Mavs showed in the Finals. Hey LeBron stop giving people excuses to not like you.

LeBron has no heart.  Everyone on the Dream Team had heart.

I'd prefer the '92 team anytime for three simple reasons.

1) Better basketball IQ.  If you wanted the '92 team they just understood the fundamentals and played as a team.  They were poetry in motion.  The passing was sweet!  The current players are not as mature or knowledgeable about the game.

2) Better size.  Not sure why the current team(s) always seem to be short on big fellas.  I'd much prefer Malone, Ewing, Barkley, Robinson to the big fellas on the current team.  Howard and Bosh are good, but neither is a Robinson, and there's zero depth.  The other guys (Love?, Griffin?) are too newbie and likely to get schooled by the vets from the international squads.

3) No "I" in Team.  The 2008 squad did a pretty nice job of checking their egos for the greater mission, however the key to that team was Kobe.  Dude WON the Gold Medal game single handedly with clutch plays at the end. Will this team play as a team or fight for the rock.  Tough to know.  1992 squad was consumate team ballers.

Overall I really like the 2012 squad.  Many reasons to see them succeed (including some nice international experience together).  Best o' luck.  Win the gold before you compare yourselves to the legends of '92!!!

Other than LeBron James and a few media minions, WHO CARES what LeBron James thinks ? It's a sad joke that LeBron even makes a comment about what he thinks comprises a great team....Maybe it's in a book he meant to have someone read to him...LeBron has become a self made parody of the overpaid, immature, spoiled, selfish, underachieving low-class, low-IQ pro athlete that can't keep his foot out of his mouth.

LeBron needs to learn to walk the walk instead of looking for someone elses elevator, before he talks the talk. So far, he knows as much about greatness, winning the Big One, and public relations, as he knows about how to hit a clutch shot under pressure in the 4th quarter...not much.

We all know LeWrong Blames is one of the dumbest athletes in pro sports ... and that he consistently makes idiotic comments that make him look foolish again and again ..  but sayin any team stacks remotely close to the dream team may be the DUMBEST THING HE'S EVER SAID .. and that says a lot for this drama QUEEN.   Like Rex-Posed .. this tool just doesn't learn when to shut up!  Embarassed
