There has never been any doubt that the 1992 Olympic team dubbed the Dream Team, is the greatest collection of basketball talent ever. They completely steamrolled everyone in their way and were even inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

And while there have been good American teams since, like 2008's Beijing roster or 1996's folllow-up team, there never has been a group quite like it. But LeBron James thinks the 20th anniversary team will compare. Via Fox Sports Florida:
"We can stack up with those guys," the Miami forward said.

[...]

"I agree," James said. "They set the standard for USA Basketball in '92 with all the great players they had. But we have some great ones as well. We have some Hall of Famers, some champions. So it's going to be a great (team)."

The only place you could ever find out is a video game, but here's an important note: The 2012 team has yet to win anything. And with the rest of the world pretty much caught up in talent with teams like Spain, France, Lithuania and others, awarding yourself a gold medal probably isn't the smartest thing. For the Americans to take home gold in London, they'll have to go through some good teams.

But for reference's sake, the Dream Team had Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Scottie Pippen, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, David Robinson, Clyde Drexler, Christian Laettner and Chris Mullin. The 2012 roster isn't set, but will likely have LeBron, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Blake Griffin, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Dwight Howard, Kevin Love, Chris Bosh and a few others.

Do they "stack up" as LeBron says? Absolutely. In terms of pure talent, the 2012 has an abundance of it. It's hard comparing the past to the present, because it's difficult to get past the greatness of players like Larry Bird and Magic Johnson and realize that guys like Durant and LeBron have comparable talents. Still, the '92 Dream Team dominated the world. The 2012 team has yet to play an exhibition. Reminds me of some other supposed "dream team"...

Don't go giving yourself not one, not two, not three, not four, not five gold medals before you've even practiced, LeBron. I figured you'd learned your lesson on that.

3 reasons why this new team will NEVER compare to 92's:

Jordan, Bird, and Magic....

1 reason overall reason this team will NEVER compare:

Jordan

The rest the squad is debatable...but throw in these 3 guys....no way, no how.

End of discussion.

Lebron is definitely a queston in terms of a head to head matchup.  However, I would put money on it that Scottie Pippen would shut Lebron down much like he did Magic.  As a matter of fact I think he would shut down most of their roster.

No matter how drunk Queen James is when you interview him, stop telling us about it.  The 92' team would be this team with their eyes closed and after eating a Thanksgiving meal.

There will never, ever be another Bird, Magic, etc...Today's players lack heart, fundamentals, toughness and an appreciation for where the game came from and the people still resposible for the success it still has.

Between people like Stern, Queen James and the current system, this league will be defunct in the next decade.

Please serve some real news and quit giving this loser a platform to speak.

While this years team is definitely great, I dont think there will ever be a collection of talent like the orginal Dream Team!  The orginal Dream Team had greatness from top to bottom with the glaring exception of Laettner. (Why Shaq was not picked still mystifies me.)  This years dream team is guard heavy and light on big men.  Come to think of it I dont think they could hang with the second Dream Team either.  Lebron really doesnt even believe what he said I bet.

You can't add "a few others" to a group of 11 when they only allow 12.

D-Dodd....You're trying to say nobody on the dream team aside from MJ had the skill set on par with Lebron? Really? Freakin Jason Terry outplayed him in the Finals and Lebron couldn't even take Shawn Marion in the post, but you think Lebron can shoot, pass and rebound better than Larry Bird? Besides that, there were several guys on the dream team that were way more clutch than Lebron.

One day this giant ass will be all alone when he's done playing basketball and no one can stand him. He says so much and has never done anything worth talking about. Please just shutup and go back Miami where that terrible fan base doesn't care what you have to say. All those old legends have more heart and skill.

Being a Cavs fan, I am not particularly enamored with Lebron James, but the author sure put a lot of words in his mouth. Lebron was clearly talking about talent level, not outcome. While Bird was one of the greatest ever, he was no where near his peak in 92, retiring immediately following the Summer Olympics. So while for nostalgia's sake it is nice to list Bird as one of the reasons the Dream Team was so great, in reality he wasn't. Lebron was right in saying this team is every bit as talented as the Dream Team. In fact, top to bottom, they are probably more talented. What they seem to lack, as do most NBA players today, is the competitive fire that drove most of the players on the original team. As far as Lebron's championships, like it or not, multiple ones are coming.

Maybe one day this motomouth will learn to shut his mouth and let his ability do the talking. I guess for someone with his ego that will be difficult.

My suggestion (I'm sure it's the same as many others) is to be a leader, win something and let the historians decide whether the 2012 team is as good as the 1992 team.

Proclaiming it is without the team being finalized only shows his arrogance and ignorance.

A great team needs chemisty and it's one of the main reasons the 92 dream team would beat this current squad.!
