There has never been any doubt that the 1992 Olympic team dubbed the Dream Team, is the greatest collection of basketball talent ever. They completely steamrolled everyone in their way and were even inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

And while there have been good American teams since, like 2008's Beijing roster or 1996's folllow-up team, there never has been a group quite like it. But LeBron James thinks the 20th anniversary team will compare. Via Fox Sports Florida:
"We can stack up with those guys," the Miami forward said.

[...]

"I agree," James said. "They set the standard for USA Basketball in '92 with all the great players they had. But we have some great ones as well. We have some Hall of Famers, some champions. So it's going to be a great (team)."

The only place you could ever find out is a video game, but here's an important note: The 2012 team has yet to win anything. And with the rest of the world pretty much caught up in talent with teams like Spain, France, Lithuania and others, awarding yourself a gold medal probably isn't the smartest thing. For the Americans to take home gold in London, they'll have to go through some good teams.

But for reference's sake, the Dream Team had Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Scottie Pippen, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, David Robinson, Clyde Drexler, Christian Laettner and Chris Mullin. The 2012 roster isn't set, but will likely have LeBron, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Blake Griffin, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Dwight Howard, Kevin Love, Chris Bosh and a few others.

Do they "stack up" as LeBron says? Absolutely. In terms of pure talent, the 2012 has an abundance of it. It's hard comparing the past to the present, because it's difficult to get past the greatness of players like Larry Bird and Magic Johnson and realize that guys like Durant and LeBron have comparable talents. Still, the '92 Dream Team dominated the world. The 2012 team has yet to play an exhibition. Reminds me of some other supposed "dream team"...

Don't go giving yourself not one, not two, not three, not four, not five gold medals before you've even practiced, LeBron. I figured you'd learned your lesson on that.

While the '92 team had all time legends and may never be matched again, if you threw out a lineup of Dwight Howard/Blake Griffin/Lebron/Kobe/Rose (keeping true to positions), with Wade/Melo/Paul/Love coming off the bench, that would not be a joke of a team to deal with.  One thing is certain, and that is the '92 dream team would in no way whatsoever be able to defend them even for a second.  The same can be said in reverse though with dominant scorers/shooters/passers/rebounders

of the original team.   As much as it sucks to hear the young, new generation not bow down to the '92 team, it would be an amazing game to watch, and if anybody believes the game wouldn't be a challenging one for both sides, they are delusional.  I don't think Lebron put his foot in his mouth, was he supposed to say "We'd get demolished if we faced those guys?   I'd give an edge to the dream team, but not a tremendous one.  All the current superstars would have flourished against the 80's/early 90's competition.

well said julz but I'll say Durant over Bird big time....Bird was on the team due to respect but he barely played due to severe back pains.  If we're talking about careers, I agree but we're matching up the actual teams

At first I was going to state that there was no way a 2012 team would stack up against the '92 Dream Team.   But then I remember that back in the early 90's, basketball was not as developed in foreign countries as it is here in the US.  I think the 2012 team would roll through everybody if they went back in time to 1992.  Overall, I think it would be a pretty close to an even matchup.  I'd give it to the Dream Team in the end.

While the guard play would be competetive, there is no contest with the center and power forward positions. With the overall edge going to the 1992 Dream Team.

In addition, overall shooting, basketball IQ, and competetiveness go to the 1992 Dream Team.

The 2012 team holds an edge in athleticism, overall point guard play, and hype.

Michael Jordan vs. Kobe Bryant, edge Jordan - Do I need to explain?
Larry Bird vs. Kevin Durant, edge Bird - Durant scores a little more but Bird is a better passer and rebounder
Magic Johnson vs LeBron James, even - LeBron is a better scorer, Magic is a better passer, equal on the boards
John Stockton vs. Chris Paul, even
Karl Malone vs. Blake Griffin, edge Malone - Not even close
Scottie Pippen vs. Derrick Rose, even - Tough to match up
Patrick Ewing vs. Kevin Love, edge Ewing - Ewing had a better overall game. He was a better scorer, passer, and defender
Charles Barkley vs. Chris Bosh, edge Barkley - Not even close
David Robinson vs. Dwight Howard, edge Robinson - Equal on everything except scoring
Clyde Drexler vs. Dwayne Wade, even
Chris Mullin vs. Deron Williams, even - Tough to match up

Some people can never just shut their mouth. Lebron you are not better than Bird, Jordan, or Magic. I'm not even sure if your better than Barkley, Pippen or Malone. What do you have on your team? Oh I know a bunch of people who can drive to the basket and dunk. Wow that's talent. On the original and only "Dream Team" you had the best scorer ever, Michael Jordan. 3 of the best passers in NBA history. Sockton, Magic and Bird. Just play your game and hopefully you learn what those players had. Class.
