There has never been any doubt that the 1992 Olympic team dubbed the Dream Team, is the greatest collection of basketball talent ever. They completely steamrolled everyone in their way and were even inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

And while there have been good American teams since, like 2008's Beijing roster or 1996's folllow-up team, there never has been a group quite like it. But LeBron James thinks the 20th anniversary team will compare. Via Fox Sports Florida:
"We can stack up with those guys," the Miami forward said.

[...]

"I agree," James said. "They set the standard for USA Basketball in '92 with all the great players they had. But we have some great ones as well. We have some Hall of Famers, some champions. So it's going to be a great (team)."

The only place you could ever find out is a video game, but here's an important note: The 2012 team has yet to win anything. And with the rest of the world pretty much caught up in talent with teams like Spain, France, Lithuania and others, awarding yourself a gold medal probably isn't the smartest thing. For the Americans to take home gold in London, they'll have to go through some good teams.

But for reference's sake, the Dream Team had Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Scottie Pippen, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, David Robinson, Clyde Drexler, Christian Laettner and Chris Mullin. The 2012 roster isn't set, but will likely have LeBron, Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Blake Griffin, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Dwight Howard, Kevin Love, Chris Bosh and a few others.

Do they "stack up" as LeBron says? Absolutely. In terms of pure talent, the 2012 has an abundance of it. It's hard comparing the past to the present, because it's difficult to get past the greatness of players like Larry Bird and Magic Johnson and realize that guys like Durant and LeBron have comparable talents. Still, the '92 Dream Team dominated the world. The 2012 team has yet to play an exhibition. Reminds me of some other supposed "dream team"...

Don't go giving yourself not one, not two, not three, not four, not five gold medals before you've even practiced, LeBron. I figured you'd learned your lesson on that.

LeBron: 2012 team 'stacks up' with Dream Tream

Here we go again, Labron, the court Jester, with another prediction. How did the last one work out for you big guy. The DREAM TEAM had and always will have something these players of today don't and will never understand; CLASS!!! Thats right they had some humility, they put their egos aside, they could ALL perform when the chips were on the line, they understood sportsmanship and not belittleing the competition, let alon the game of basketball itself. Thats right CLASS!! The essence of what makes a true adult male and the defining differnce between the forementioned and a THUG. Dream Team was able to always put the ego's aside and do what was best for the team. The only players on the 2012 team I see "getting it" are Wade and Griffin.

We have heard talk of a team being as good as The Dream Team before. What happened to that team? I believe they lost and did not even medal. The Players of today need to get a clue. They may be very talented, I will give them that, but they will never be the complete professional athlete the Dream Team represented. They lack the neccessary ingredient - CLASS. Ever wonder why Isiah Thomas was not on the dream team? It was because he lacked the class and the other players collectively kept him off the team.

No--- with the players of today and the way they act and lack of class, there will not be a team comparable to the original dream team for a while.

@DutchDragons...Isaih was not on the 1992 Dream Team nor any other Dream team..however I get your point...the pampered modern day players are so fundamentally flawed and selfish they would be out classed in all phases of the game, then they would go cry and whine on there twitter pages....lol

This really wouldn't be a close game at all. The 92 squad would dominate.  First off no one on the 12 team could stop the pick and roll of Stockton to Malone.  To stop it you needed to double one of them and if you are doubling one of them you are leaving open several of the greatest sharp shooters to ever play the game.  Please giving Bird and Mullin wide open looks.  Did someone really say Bird and Durant was a wash?  They may be a wash today since Bird has been retired for over two decades.  Also saying that Barkley and Love are a wash.  Seriously Barkley won an MVP while playing in the same era as Jordan.  Love wouldn't know what hit him if he was posted up by Barkley.  Then we have Jordan completely shutting down James.  You would have the second greatest player (right behind Bird) Jordan stealing the ball from James and schooling him on the other side of the court.  Wake up Jester James!!!!!!

The fact that players are constantly comparing themselves to the 1992 'Dream Team' shows you just how great that team was.

The 2012 is a very talented group of players, but talent doesn't win games alone.

The 1992 Dream Team was talented, unselfish, fundamentally sound, and it seemed like they played together their entire lives.

The 1992 Dream Team would pack in the middle, forcing outside shots, and dominate this game.
If the 2012 Team tries to pack in the middle, the likes of Bird, Mullin, and others would rain in threes.

The inside presence of The Admiral and Patrick Ewing would be way too much for any of the players on the 2012 team.

The 1992 Dream Team had a 6'9" PG...who on the 2012 team could match up with Magic?

Again, everyone wants to be compared to the 1992 Dream Team because it was the best team ever assembled.

Could there be a better team?  Sure...but this 2012 team is not.

The only way it would be close is if they actually played against each other today!<br />

Not even close

Jordan (6), Pippen (6), Bird (3), Magic (5), Isaih (2)  are CHAMPIONS

Kobe has (2) on his own and (3) with Shaq, Wade has (1), Carmelo NONE

Not sure where Lebron thinks he has champions on his team

Another delusional athlete pampered his whole life so he thinks he's god on the court.

When will he learn to just shut his mouth.

THE TRUTH

Magis is the difference on this list between the two. otherwise its really close.

There is some fantastic talent in the NBA right now. The championships definitely dont matchup, but I'd take the 2012 team any day. It would go seven games for sure if these teams played in the finals.
