From a major Sports Illustrated feature to a jail cell: it's been a week that Clifton "Pop" Herring, Michael Jordan's high school basketball coach, won't soon forget.
WECT.com reports that Herring was arrested at his home on Friday after a dead body was found there on Thursday.
Detectives with the Wilmington Police Department found a body while searching a home in Wilmington Friday for evidence relating to a missing person's case, and WECT has learned that one of two men arrested at the home the night before used to be Michael Jordan's basketball coach while he attended Laney High School. In the Sports Illustrated profile, Herring wanted to make it clear that he did not "cut" Jordan from the Laney (N.C.) High School basketball team. Rather, Herring said that he "placed" Jordan on the junior varsity team during Jordan's sophomore year.
Reports say police arrested Clifton Herring in the 1100 block of Cowan Street on Thursday night. One of the men was arrested at the home for an outstanding warrant, and Herring was charged with resisting, delaying and obstructing that arrest.
The address where police found the woman's body buried Friday is also the same address that Herring listed as his home address when arrested.
The profile noted that Herring was struggling financially and living a hard life. Herring told the magazine that Jordan had no contact wtih him during the last 17 years.
