Kobe: CP3 and Rose only guys that have his edge

Kobe Bryant has never been shy. Not with the ball in his hands and not with his words. He tells it like it is, says what he means and is often a bit braggadocios with it, which obviously, he has reason to be.

Following the Lakers loss to the Clippers Saturday, Kobe paid Chris Paul, and Derrick Rose, about as high a compliment there is from the Black Mamba.

"He's a dog," Kobe told reporters. "He's going to fight to win, and not too many teams can deal with him.

"Chris Paul is really the only other guy in the league, other than Derrick Rose, who has also that competitive edge," he continued.

Notice the names missing from Kobe's list there. No LeBron James. No Dwyane Wade. No Kevin Durant. No Dirk Nowitzki. No Kevin Garnett. Nope, on Kobe's personal power rankings of players that possess the same competitive edge as him, it goes Kobe and then CP3 and Rose in some order.

That's just Kobe talking, which he likes to do. It's not a slight to the other players but more just something that shows the respect Kobe has for Rose and Paul. Still, it seems like quite an oversight to leave out players like Wade, Durant and Dirk.

And really, what exactly is that "competitive edge" that Kobe speaks of? What tells him that CP3 and Rose have it? What makes him think that those guys are on another level when it comes to wanting to win? It's just Kobe's opinion and he's more than entitled to that, but still, it's quite a thing to only put two players in your category in terms of competitiveness. Kobe wants to be Michael Jordan, who had a legendary amount of it. And only a couple others are in that territory, evidently.

Kobe: CP3 and Rose only guys that have his edge

Strange statement, I'd say there are many more players who fit in this rare air Kobe has created. Paul Peirce for one is a killer down the stretch of games. Kobe has a few rings so he has anointed himself as the NBA spokesman on killer instinct. I don't recall MJ ever speaking out about other players on other teams. Kobe is an all time great and can say anything he wants, doesn't ake it true.

This could backfire

Kobe left out 11 important people: his teammates.  It could motivate them or it could make them not want to play with Kobe.  So, while his honesty is refreshing, he might have made a mistake here.  We'll see how the locker room politics work out here.  If his locker room is populated with losers, they will all be offended.  If not, the Lakers could go on a tear.

All in all, though, it sounds like he is taking his new TV commercial way too seriously.

This isn't about talent level. Kobe means guys who are as talented as him that play with the same fire as him. Wade does not play with a fire/desire to win. If he did he could take over a game and win but he doesn't. If the 3 headed monster in Miami are struggling, none of them have the fire to step up their game. The reality is with that talent they really shouldn't even lose a game. If all played with the "fire" to step up their game when the others were struggling then they would be undefeated. Rose in contrast can step up his game and spark his team to win. He's the closest thing to the new age Michael Jordan both in talent and in desire to win.

As A Kobe fan I would have to add Dwayne Wade there as well.  Durant is getting close but still too much of a nice guy still on the court.  Wade definitely belongs though.

The ultimate compliment.  But I could think of a few more: Paul Pierce, Jason Kidd, and yes, Dirk Nowitz.  They play unconsciously, with that killer instinct, every night.  I'ts not just about the paycheck,... they can't accept losing!  By contrast I can remember more tallented players who disappear when the game is on the line.  Like Karl Malone, Clyde Drexler, and Vince Carter.  It's a rare trait.

The ultimate compliment coming from one who knows... But I'd think there are a few others who fit the mold.  How about Paul Pierce, Jason Kidd, and yes, Dirk Nowitz?  You can tell by the look in their eyes. They don't just play to earn a paycheck.  They're driven and determined every night, oblivious to their surroundings, with one goal in mind.... to win.  By contrast, there have been more tallented players who seemed to disappear during games, like Karl Malone, Clyde Drexler, and Vince Carter, to name a few.

Love what he said and actually see what he means. Even in his commercial all over the Tv it's the same message. Those three do have similar traits, knowing when and what play to make at the right time. I have never seen a player go head to head with Kobe in a while and a big reason I wanted Paul in Purple and Gold that very edge that propels to greatness above others, and yes in other sports their are Names to be mentioned. He is talking about a short season and the current state of where things are in the League. Other stars have their moments but think about the last 3-4 years and each of these players and what they have done, Chris Paul elevated the Hornets into the playoffs and great season record,Rose has put the Bulls  in the conference finals the last 2 straight years, and as for Kobe the last 4 years have been simply awe-inspiring and it took the humiliation of what the Celtics did to elevate even him to get the other 2 rings, COMPETITIVE EDGE,not a stacked team that loses in the finals, Not a team that finally won its FIRST title, or an up-start franchise expansion team that takes a veteran team deep in a playoff run once. Kobe does not want to be Jordan, he wants to be better than him. Shaq put it best in his commentary on the NBA network when he put it like this " He wants to be the greatest player to ever play the game. 2 more rings and all of you will see what he is saying. It's what these three do and how they elevate themselves and their teammates play that should have us all in awe!

Kobe: CP3 and Rose only guys that have his edge

We are losing the fun in sports journalism. I love this statement by Kobe. Agree or disagree, at least he said what he thinks. Do we really want to get to the point that all the discussion is screened and politically correct because it will upset someone? I hope not.

By the way, there ARE a lot of players in the league who spend more time whining and posturing than playing with that killer instinct. Paul and Rose really do play with heart. At least this begins an interesting discussion.

I'm not disputing the fact that no one is a better closer than Kobe but does he really think people are intimidated when he makes that ridiculous face?  Or that he's being scary?  Just curious
