Knicks targeting Steve Nash this offseason?

There have been a whole lot of Steve Nash to New York rumors over the past few years with his former coach Mike D'Antoni running the show and former teammate Amar'e Stoudemire playing in the Big Apple.

Every time, that rumor has been squashed without anything all that substantial coming out of it. I'm sure the Knicks have called the Suns and made inquiries over the past couple seasons, but that happens all the time, all over the place.

This time though, there might be a little more steam behind it. Because it makes a whole lot of sense. According to the New York Post, the Knicks plan on targeting Nash this summer using their mid-level exception.
That’s why The Post has reported the Knicks plan to target Nash (along with Jameer Nelson and Raymond Felton) with this summer’s $5 million mid-level exception.
Shocking news: The Knicks, a team that need a point guard like Boris Diaw needs a donut, are planning on targeting available point guards. I know, I can't believe it either.

But the thought of Nash is what makes it more intriguing. Right now, Mike Bibby, Iman Shumpert and Toney Douglas are splitting duties with Baron Davis likely to take over the full-time role once he's healthy. And though Nash is 37, he is still Steve Nash and would be a terrific addition for the Knicks. Especially considering he could pull back a bit on having to do so much like he does in Phoenix.

My question is, and I posed this in my thing ripping the Knicks point guard situation, why not go hard after Nash now? Yeah, I suppose you could just wait until the offseason and sign him without giving up anything in return, but that just means the Knicks have to hope and pray Baron Davis gives them something. Otherwise, it's just another mediocre season at MSG and wait until next year when Nash is a year older.

I understand waiting on Nelson or Felton. But Nash does genuinely seem like a terrific fit. The problem is that the Knicks have gutted themselves getting Carmelo Anthony that there isn't much left to deal for Nash. Nash has said he won't request a deal, but if at the deadline the Suns decide they want to deal him and Nash says, "I'll only go to New York," and the Knicks come calling offering up Shumpert, Landry Field and Douglas plus a spare part pick, maybe that's enough to make Phoenix bite. Maybe the Suns decide they'd like to get back three rookie deal players in exchange for Nash. Or maybe the Suns would rather preserve cap space and be players in the 2012 market.

Or maybe Nash just wants to stay with the Suns. I guess that could happen too.

SERIOUSLY ? Give up on 21 or so year old Schumpert, 23 year old Fields and more for a 37 year old PG they can get for nothing in FA next season?

Not to mention Baron Davis back in 2-4 weeks.  Yes, the same Baron Davis who was an All-Star.

What a horrible idea, trading away all that young talent.

Give Davis a run and if he doesn't cut it just sign NAsh with the mid-level exemption.

Knicks targeting Steve Nash this offseason?

Love the NY haters out there. Dont hear any bitching about the other long time NY sports teams, so keep up on the Knicks while you still can!!!!  Why wouldnt Nash want to come here for the rest of the season and why wouldnt the Suns (4-9 at the moment) want to get something for him. Not sure of cap ramifications but dont see why Shumpert, Max Cash amount in trade, and any Knicks to fit with the cap other than the Big 3 for Nash wouldnt be good for both sides. Nash could give it a go for one season and if he is not happy is a FA and Knick get a chance to make him happy as he can still pass the rock. WIN WIN (LOSE LOSE for all the NY haters)

I am a Knicks fan, let be me be the first ot tell u all, this team is garbage without a legit point guard. Let me also state, that the guy the Knicks are missing is Ray Felton, who was ON THE TEAM last season, and thrown in the Melo trade. Knicks are like the Cowboys, a lot of media hype, around garbage... i was not duped this year. D'Antoni;s team was never going to be run without a true fulltime point guard. Those who think Shumpert is magic johnson, did not watch college basketball, and there lies the truth, hes a nice player, but think more trevor ariza, than rajon rondo (a guy this team passed up on for ronaldo balkman). The Knicks need a guy like Marshall from UNC to clarify what I'm talking about.
Steve Nash is a good pick-up, 7 years ago.

Love this comment.....the Knicks will NEVER EVER be a contender as long as D' Antoni is running the show and certainly not with a 45 year old revloving door of a defender in Nash...

Why would Nash go to the Knicks voluntarily?  Its where careers go to die.

If he wants to go to a contender, it won't be in New York City.

If you are the Knicks and you have made some recent deals to really upgrade the team(stoudemire, Anthony come to mind right away) This is a good deal to get him for a year or 2 and see if you can swing a championship run like the Celtics.  But the difference is you only sign him to a 2-year deal.  If it doesn't work out, you are clear of his salary in 2 years.  I think this is a great move and would upgrade the team right away and give them a chance to improve on seeding going into the playoffs.  Try and make a quick run, if it doesn't work, you are off the guy in 2 years.

They owe it to Nash to get him to a contender so he at least has a chance and they owe it to the Suns fans to get something in return since we all had to watch Stoudemire walk for nothing.
A contender? I thought this article was about Nash going the Knicks? Who is this contender you speak of him going to?? I know it's not the Knicks you're referring to as a contender. The Knicks are 6-7 and have beaten one "quality" team in Philadelphia this season.

And I'm not convinced how "quality" of a team the 76ers are anyway. Their record is 10-3 yes, but they have played a bunch of below average to bad teams so far.

Knicks haven't been contenders since the mid 90's and won't be a contender anytime soon.

Steve Nash doesn't want to play with a loser like Carmelo Anthony and he personally can't stand New York.
