Yahoo Sports reports that the Washington Wizards have fired Flip Saunders after a 2-15 start to the season. Ken Berger of CBSSports.com confirms the report and saysRandy Wittman will take over as interim coach. Berger reports Saunders was fired after Wizards' loss to the 76ers Monday night in which Washington was down 30 at the half, had compiled nine assists in a half, matching Andre Iguodala's singular output, and eventually losing by 20.

Saunders was recently reportedly not on the hot seat from management, but disappointing losses to the struggling Boston Celtics in a winnable game at home, followed by a thrashing by the Philadelphia 76ers Monday night may have changed ownership's mind. The Wizards had shown some signs of life recently, beating Oklahoma City last week and losing to the Nuggets and Celtics in close games. But at 2-14, well, horseshoes and hand grenades.

The Wizards have struggled in nearly every phase of the game this season, incoherent offense, a lost defense, poor chemistry and regression from the franchise cornerstone in John Wall. If the report is accurate, it was probably time to see if someone else can try and right a ship that has gone so terribly off-course.

Im surprised by this move. Leonsis wants ping pong balls. He is trying to duplicate the Washington Capitals formula. Lots of young talent emerging at one time. Saunders is such a terrible fit and the team is so bad that no one can make it work. It is the perfect way to get Teddy his ping pong balls. Plus he is one of those owners that would have been happier had the league shut down for a year or two, now he hast to pay a coach $6 million to do nothing.

Wizards local here. I heard on the radio that Flip is the type of coach that trusts ADULTS like the pistons team to go over their scouting reports and to listen to what the coaches say.

With the Wizards, you have a bunch of new, immature players who love hot dogging and ball hogging. All about numbers. They need a hard nose coach. With what has been going on the past few years, I think they need to bring someone from the outside who won't be a pushover like the current regime.

Y the hell does anybody think Saunders is a good coach? He never made it past the 1st round with Minnesota and it took him 2 years to take a championship team in Detriot and run it straight into the ground.

I'm glad others brought up the Cassell thing.  I kind of always thought he was being groomed.

This ship has been off course since the early 80's.  One playoff series win since the 81-82 season, when they won a miniseries and then lost to the defending champion Celtics in five hard-fought games.  It just seems like nothing works for this franchise, including the stupid-ass name change.  To me, this franchise will always be the Bullets and happily I am old enough to remember their glory days of the 70's.

The Wiz have enough talent to be competitive and win at least .500 ball.  Wall is improving, Young is a scorer, Blatche is lazy and inconsistent and McGee is improving but can be inconsistent and undisciplined at times.  Not much on the bench except for Crawford.  The Wiz need a coach who can come in and put his foot in their butts and can motivate beyond measure.

hey Ted, why stop at half the problem? Fire Ernie also, While you are at it, tell them to take Dale Hunter with them. What a terrible hire. You had a great offensive coach (look how he has turned Anaheim around) and tried to make him tell offensive players to stop playing offense. Then, you fire him and hire a guy who wants even less offense. Brilliant. Oh, and they can all be joined by that idiot George McPhee.
