Here's how you know you might need point guard help: You're calling Gilbert Arenas up.

According to HoopsWorld, the Los Angeles Lakers are interested in the veteran point guard, who was cut via the amnesty clause by the Magic before the season started.
The Los Angeles Lakers have expressed interest in Gilbert Arenas, according to sources close to the situation. The 30-year-old is an unrestricted free agent after being amnestied by the Orlando Magic last month. No signing is imminent, but the Lakers have reached out to the veteran point guard.

League sources say that Arenas would love to join the Lakers. He grew up in Los Angeles and is interested in playing for his hometown team. He believes that he can contribute in Los Angeles’ backcourt, which currently features an aging Derek Fisher, injured Steve Blake and inexperienced Darius Morris. Arenas and Blake played together for two years with the Washington Wizards.

By all accounts, Arenas is in shape and ready to sign on with a team. And the Lakers make a decent amount of sense. Arenas wants to play on a good team and the Lakers desperately need some help at that position. As well as scoring options. Arenas could potentially help with both.

Arenas played relatively well in Orlando averaging better than 17 points a game in games he started, but he never did settle into a backup role well. And that could be the challenge for him in Los Angeles. Derek Fisher will likely remain the starter and Arenas would have to push to beat out Steve Blake (when he's healthy) and rookie Darius Morris.

It's just a matter of need and if the Lakers need offensive help, specifically at point guard, that badly, then Arenas is one of the best answers on the market. He'd likely sign for the veteran minimum, so he'd be a low risk deal. And if he could find a little of his old self, it could be a great signing. You want to avoid distraction or an upset in chemistry and with Arenas being an older veteran, I think he'd handle his business well. Especially since he doesn't have a lot of options right now.

If you want to upgrade your D then Arenas is NOT the answer.

Pao was just saying the other day that the locker room has been really boring lately.  No one has brought a hand gun to work in over a month.  I wonder, does anyone know what Gilbert Arenas is doing these days?  Sounds like a good idea on the surface, but someone might want to write "No Card Games" into his contract.  He apparently likes to welch on those sometimes, and it can lead to "chemistry issues".

I have listened to some of these comments and I think that Arenas would be a pretty good signing. If he has lost 20 lbs and in great shape give the guy a shot. I heard has played pretty good in the summer leagues this year. He has to be a upgrade to what the Lakers have now. I know the rookies are young but it won't hurt them to sit on the bench for a year or two and get limited minutes for now and grow. There is no way my Lakers win with the current roster they have. We have no PG period. Fisher is a good leader but his better days are behind him and in the clutch I still think he can hit the big shot but he can't guard the current PG's in the NBA now. Lets see what Arean's got and if he doesn't act right and if he is a locker room cancer cut his butt. Lets sign him to a incentive base contract with a league vet salary only. I am tired of watching the lakers play this season with so little talent and no ability to beat any of the elite teams.

A motivated Arenas would be a nice add.  He would be an upgrade to Fisher, hell a fencepost would be an upgrade to Fisher.  The Lakers need a guard who can score that isn't named Bryant.  If head case Metta Whirled Peas can settle down and live in Kobe's world then maybe Arenas can too.

Awwww man I just finished writin out this whole theoretical trade idea for the Lakers to pick up some guards and get Dwight Howard in the process.  The run-down was something like, Orlando trades Dwight Howard,Chris Duhon and Quentin Richardson to the Lakers and in return would get either Bynum OR Gasol, along with Troy Murphy and Jason Kapono.  Orlando's identity is being a 3 point shooting team.  I dont care what anyone says but when Troy Murphy is healthy he is AWESOME!! When he started for the Pacers when Granger was out he was cranking three's, scoring in the paint and getting to the free throw line and hes a good FT shooter, and he was also grabbin 10-15 rbs a game.  So Gasol or Bynum replace Howard and you can mix lineups that have Murphy starting with Ryan Anderson, Jameer Nelson, Gasol or Bynum and Jason Richardson and they get to maintain their bench and add Kapono who has had his moments as a 3 pt shooter!!  Duhon could take over for the aging Derek Fischer or have him off the bench, whatever.  Then Kobe,Howard, Gasol or Bynum and Barnes I guess.  Either way Duhon and Quentin Richardson could give the Lakers a lift at the guard position and maybe provide a spark.  Either way, Howard Kobe along with Gasol or Bynum gives them a triple threat.  Might not seem like a great trade but I think both teams benefit in a major way.  If you think its a hairbrain idea.... please indulge me.  If not, be interested to hear any thoughts!  Either way, I think this trade would be better than getting a gun toting distraction, thats out of his prime, to be your 6th man.Arenas was great at one point, but 4 years is a long time in the NBA.  See what happens....

This is why the whole concept of talent is absurd in the NBA.  Kwame Brown makes millions as a flop, the Wizards sign children to long term contracts and former Wizard and wild man Arenas continues to collect on his multi-year deal with the aforementioned Wizards.  Now the Lakers can't wait to add him to the "new circus come to town"   One wonders if Phil would even consider this.  Heavens knows he tried  to surround himself and the team with adults----not talented children who will never grow up

This move makes perfect sense, but it will only work out if Gilbert decides to be a good teammate and can handle a backup role.

He also needs to decide not to bring any type of gun into the locker room.  If he hadn't done that in the first place he'd already be on a team.
