The plan is finally starting to come together.

In the immediate aftermath of Shaquille O'Neal's retirement back in June 2011, the Los Angeles Lakers announced that the franchise would retire his No. 34 jersey.
At the time, a team spokesperson said there was no timetable for when the ceremony would take place.

NBA.com reports on Thursday that the Lakers are expected to retire O'Neal's jersey during the 2012-2013 season, citing the rushed lockout schedule as the reason why the ceremony didn't take place this year.

O'Neal paired with Lakers guard Kobe Bryant to win three titles for the franchise. His time with the Lakers is generally regarded as the high point of his career, making the jersey retirement decision a no-brainer.

Lakers owner Jerry Buss issued a statement of appreciation for O'Neal last summer.

"Shaq had a long and amazing career," Buss' statement read. "A huge impact both on and off the court. His contributions were significant to the entire NBA, but we specifically appreciate what he did with and what he meant to the Lakers during his eight years with us. We have three championships that we wouldn’t have won without him, and we will forever be grateful for his significant contributions to those teams."

Earlier this week, Bryant passed O'Neal to move into fifth place on the NBA's all-time scoring list. O'Neal graciously congratulated Bryant on the achievement, calling him, "the greatest Laker ever."

O'Neal is currently serving as an NBA commentator for TNT.

The Lakers have only retired the jerseys of seven players to date. All seven are members of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

The full list:
  • Kareem Abdul-Jabbar -- No. 33
  • Elgin Baylor -- No. 22
  • Wilt Chamberlain -- No. 13
  • Gail Goodrich -- No. 25
  • Magic Johnson -- No. 32
  • Jerry West -- No. 44
  • James Worthy -- No. 42

So....You say EVERY one of them brings back memories of their long careers as Lakers? As a lifetime Laker fan, you must not have been there. I was. Wilt Chamberlain, as much as I loved him, was only here for 5 years. And it was his last 5 years as a player, the tail end of his career. Although he was still a defensive beast, he wasn't nearly the same offensive player that he was earlier in his career. He won 1 championship as a Laker. Shaq, on the other hand, was here for 8 years in the prime of his career, and won 3 titles. If Wilt belongs up there, then Shaq surely does.

As a lifelong Lakers fan, I'm not on board with this decision at all. You look at that list of retired Lakers and every one of them brings back memories of their long careers with the Lakers. Shaq was only here for eight years, many of them with turmoil surrounding him, and, although grateful for his part in winning three titles, he does NOT come to mind as a lifetime Laker. He was paid very well for his services, won a few titles, and moved on, with biting words for those left behind. End of story. His jersey doesn't belong with the rest of those guys.

I can see why the Lakers would want to retire Shaq’s jersey. After all while he was a player with the Lakers when they won three NBA championships.

I see he and Kobe are cordial to each other, where in the hell was all this cordiality when they were playing together? Can you imagine how many additional NBA championship banners would be hanging from the rafters in the Staples Center had they been as cordial to each other as they are now?

It was not meant to be, therefore I suppose I should return and  remain in the real world.

I was pissed at Shaq when he decided to play in Miami and leave the Lakers, but I suppose it is time to let bygones be bygones and reconcile with the big guy.

And Kobe has volunteered to pull the rop to raise the banner to the rafters. Ooops sorry my mistake: Kobe has volunteered to wrap a rope around Shaq's neck and raise him to the rafters. :0)
