Wolves offering Derrick Williams for Pau Gasol?

The Lakers already tried to trade Pau Gasol once this season. So they aren't completely married to their Spanish power forward. The Lakers appear to be a team shopping at the trade deadline, especially with that nice trade exception they got in the Lamar Odom deal.

But that doesn't mean the Lakers are just going to do anything. So are ready for a trade rumor that almost certainly will not happen, but is pretty fun to think about anyway? Via FoxSports.com:
In other news involving NBA big men, a source said Wednesday that Minnesota continues to pursue a possible trade for Lakers forward Pau Gasol, dangling rookie Derrick Williams, who is from the Los Angeles area, and draft choices.

The only players considered untouchable by the Timberwolves, who are seeking to add a veteran by the trade deadline, are Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio. The Timberwolves believe it could be enticing for Gasol to play on the same team as fellow Spaniard Rubio.
The two biggest reasons this isn't happening:

1) No way Kobe Bryant would at all be cool with this, considering he's not exactly of the mind for the Lakers to start a rebuilding youth movement as he chases a sixth ring. If you want to upset Kobe, trade Gasol for someone not named Dwight.

2) Actually, that first reason is probably enough.

Then again, maybe there's one reason it would. Maybe the Lakers have visions of using Williams in a package with Andrew Bynum to have a go at Dwight Howard. Maybe the Gasol/Bynum thing isn't what Orlando is looking for and instead wants to get younger, get some picks and get some talent back. That, I can buy.

From the Minnesota perspective, I'm actually a little curious as to why the Wolves would want to go down that path. Gasol is more of a 4 than a 5 and they already have Kevin Love playing power forward. And Nikola Pekovic is coming on strong right now at center. It's understandable if they see Williams not fitting in anywhere, but Gasol's not exactly a major need player for them either.

Either way, there's a month until the trade deadline and I'm pretty sure this isn't the last trade rumor you're going to hear Gasol's name get dropped in. The Lakers want, and probably need, to make a deal. And Gasol's a pretty big piece to dangle out there.

Well, well, well. Does anyone else remember rumors of this trade on the week of draft night? I believe the Lakers were the ones that offered Minnesota their choice of Gasol or odom for the 2nd choice in Williams.

Now that Williams isn't an instant success, Minny is willing to take them up on their offer. Well, if I'm the Lakers and I still like Williams, I would widely consider it. The Lakers are obviously no longer a legit championship contender. Up until last week, the Lakers were on the outside looking in on the playoffs in general.

Are the Lakers satisfied with simply making a playoff appearance? I'd say the Lakers are 2 years away from completely blowing up the team. Might as well get a high draft choice while you still can.

@Balrog.....i agree, this is NOT a good trade. Lol

Gasol for a rookie SF/PF tweener who can't even crack the starting lineup on a terrible team.

DON'T IT!

i think this is a good trade for both teams, Gasol is experienced and can play and for the lakers, it gives them a young player to help build them.
You are insane if you think this is a good trade for the Lakers.  I don't know what draft picks the T-Wolves are "dangling" as part of this deal but unless they are lottery picks this year and next there is no way the Lakers make such a dumb trade....an unproven 6-8 PF, for a 7-0 PF who, although getting old in NBA terms, is still one of the top-5 PFs in the NBA.....sure, while still somewhat of a contender (Lakers need help at PG and another shooter, not a "project" PF), LA is going to give up its #2 option on offense and 4inches in height (and height is LA's advantage over most teams) for an unproven PF and future picks of unknown quality -- not happening.  The Lakers are not going to contend by giving up Gasol on a trade like this, it only happens if you are going to completely blow up the team and rebuild and that is not happening while Kobe is still in LA.

What happened with Gibert??

Change of topic briefly... Did anyone hear any follow-up in the Lakers' interest in Arenas??  I read that they were going to a workout, and have not heard anything since?  Any info?  Thanks.

California dreamin? Lol Minnesotians make me laugh, you think getting a top five PF for an unproven rookie and a pick is a BAD deal for the Wolves???. You my friend are an idiot... The reason this trade is humorous is because the Lakers would never trade their star for chump change!

As a TWolves fan, I seriously hope this doesn't happen. Gasol is a great player, but we don't need another PF. Also, I really think that Williams has more upside. He's young and athletic and fits more with Rubio's style of play. I really like our roster the way it is. If anything, how about trading away Beasley for a nice 2 guard.
