The long, enduring process of bringing J.R. Smith to the Knicks has ended. Smith announced on Twitter Friday he'd chosen the New York Knicks.

After reports indicated earlier this week that Smith's decision was down to the Knicks or Clippers, and then that the Knicks had taken the upper hand, reports Friday indicated that the decision has been made. The New York Post reported that Smith would sign Friday with the Knicks, and will be in uniform Sunday when Linsanity faces another tough test against the Dallas Mavericks in Madison Square Garden.

Smith confirmed to Alex Kennedy of HoopsWorld Thursday that he was close to a deal with the Knicks, though he did not confirm it was done. Meanwhile, the Oregonian reports of the insane lengths both the Clippers and Knicks are going through to try and sign Smith, including sending a representative to meet Smith when he got off the plane. From the Oregonian:
Things got so interesting Thursday that Smith hopped a plane from China to LAX, arriving at the airport in the late afternoon, where he was intercepted, his camp said, by a representative for the Knicks. Smith was apparently headed later in the evening to Las Vegas, and according to a source in Smith's family, the Knicks bought a ticket for their guy and sent him along, too.

New York apparently hoped to sign Smith as he cleared Customs, and I can't say I blame them after what I heard Del Negro promised Smith.

Get this: Smith was told via text message from Del Negro, in what feels like a desperate, last-ditch effort, that he'd be -- a starter -- for the Clippers.

Start? Smith? Really?

"What I text to J.R. is between J.R. and me," Del Negro said. "We're just trying to make our team better. I think everyone on our team understands that."

So that's a little insane.

Can we take a second to note that J.R. Smith has been back in the states for less than 12 hours and was headed to Vegas? How can you not love the NBA?

Smith joining the Knicks helps bolster their depth considerably. Being able to play a second lineup of Toney Douglas/Mike Bibby, Iman Shumper, Landry Fields, and a big to pair with Amar'e Stoudemire or Tyson Chandler means the dropoff won't be as big, and the ability to keep a scorer on the floor with Melo or, ahem, Jeremy Lin on the bench helps considerably in the backcourt.

It also means the Clippers will have to go elsewhere to try and recover their scoring lost when Chauncey Billups tore his Achilles.

J.R. Smith to the Knicks

I have never liked JR Smith his entire career, but being a Knicks fan I have been forced to root for many guys that I am not a fan of. This signing actually could work out really well for the Knicks though. He brings some outside shooting and can be the scorer off the bench for this team. I am curious to see how the Knicks incorporate his playing time. Once this team is completely healthy with Baron and Melo also on the mend I will be curious to see how D'Antoni works the rotation. Lin will definitely still start but could use a few more breaks during games as his minutes are very high. But guys like Shumpert, Jeffries, and Fields have earned quality playing time so I would like to still see them play big roles as well. I just like the fact that the Knicks are heading in the right direction.

J.R. Smith to the Knicks

J.R. Smith is not a disappointment.  You're just mad because he's no longer playing in the Mile High city.  The NY Knicks just got better, with the acquisition of Smith.  He'll contribute in a positive way.  Stop the hating, markgersim.

J.R. Smith to the Knicks

Very solid pickup for NY.  J.R. Smith average 12 ppg in 25 minutes while playing 79 games for Denver last season.  He'll be the sixth or seventh guy off the bench and can even start some games considering if one of the Knicks' starters gets injured.  You can see why Vinny Del Negro of the Clippers wanted him badly.  Whatever the case, having a NY Knicks representative at LAX was key and goes to show you how Knicks' management are committed in turning things around now that Linsanity has taken over the Big Apple.

The Clippers lose out and must now seek assistance elsewhere.  And the fact that J.R. Smith played ball in China, it means he's in basketball shape and should contribute rather quickly.  Things just got better for NY and it's going to be even more interesting when 'Melo is 100 percent.  Amazing how a month ago, NY Knicks basketball was at a nosedive.  I guess that's how life is.....an unpredictable journey.

J.R. Smith to the Knicks

Thiss is a horrible signing. Well for the Knicks not for my celtics, Smith is overratted and a headcase. Hell shoot 30% and start bitching about playing time after a week.

J.R. Smith to the Knicks

how is your level "all-star" if you ask questions like is Joe Johnson a shooting guard?  how in the world is joe johnson not a shooting guard?  what world are you from? do you watch basketball?  what is marvin williams then?  do you know who marvin williams is? has pierce never played as a shooting guard before ray allen came? ever? are you insane?  what happens if ray allen is injured and they don't have anyone else that can play the SG spot better.  do they have to say "no, we don't have a sg, because paul pierce is a small forwar, and we can't start him as a SG."

What about that time when magic started at center because the lakers didn't have anyone else available?  did that no longer make him a point guard until the next time he started at PG so i couldn't name him in my list of top point guard after that game until they put him back at PG? should i have included him in a list of top centers?

ok wrap it up guys, chauncey billups should just retire because he's a PG and not a SG, so he can't play anymore since CP3 is PG and mo williams is pg.  Caron Butler can't move over to SG because he was a SF before big shot went down.  dwade should never run point, lebron should never be the facilitator, and the knicks can't put STAT at center if Chandler goes down because he can only be one or the other.

then what the hell is STAT?  is he a PF or a center?  what the hell is jared jeffries?  pau gasol before bynum started? Rudy Gay?  Josh Smith?  Gerald Wallace? Lamarcus Aldridge? Shawn Marion? JRich? Hedo? what are they?  geez are you serious?

J.R. Smith to the Knicks

Hey, the new Knicks are starting to look like the vintage Knicks, you know with the drawlers they had like Mason and Ewing.

J.R. Smith to the Knicks

I certainly hope that Knick fans won't tolerate J.R's kid sister going gangsta in MSG when some dude boos her brother. That crowd in China may not have known how to deal with "baby girl", but New Yorkers have seen that act before and will take care of business. You got to give J.R. props for heading for the craps tables in Vegas as soon as he escaped mainland China though.

J.R. Smith to the Knicks

True, getting caught with weed is different from getting your friend killed in an accident.  regardless, how does your observation of his on-court demeanor entitle you to judge him and say he didn't change?  Does he have to ignore his talents and completely change the way he plays to be forgiven for what happened?

NBA coaches don't have the time to coddle an immature player?  i never said he needed a father figure to teach him about life.  I said he needed a coach that gave him confidence - like D'Antoni's confidence in Lin.  Everyone kenw he had something special in New Orleans.  He could have been given a completely different image if he had the right coach.  COULD have, not would have.

a lot of great players are inconsistent.  if JR could be spectacular every game, he wouldn't be JR, he'd be MJ.  Look at gerald wallace - he's a great, great player, but he had a crap game yesterday after having a great geam the night before.  He's a terrific home-game player, but not as spectacular on the road.

Look at Josh Smith - he's a monster, but he also struggles every now and then and shoots 3s too much - obviouisly not as inconsistent as JR, but you get my point.

I understand that he doesn't always deliver in big moments, but at least the guy tries.

Bottom line - maybe, and hopefully, he'll have a great career in NY and unlike in Denver, knicks fans will appreciate him?

J.R. Smith to the Knicks

Say this as a Denver Nuggets fan - JR Swish will shoot you into games; JR Clank will shoot you out of just as many!

Hopefully he learned how to play a little DEFENSE while in China . . .
